“The legend in Padang”
Reviewed August 6, 2014

Though a little bit old, Pangeran Beach Hotel still has what it takes to be a four star hotel in Padang. Room was quite comfort, had large pool, and just a stone-throw away from the beach. Breakfast was also nice, with the helpful waiters.

I stayed at this hotel for three nights and found it quiet and peaceful; perfect if you need to get away. However, the wifi was not strong in my room and I was not able to connect to the Internet most times. The room was big, clean and comfortable but rather old. I found the air conditioning too cold and was unable to run it down. I also had problems with my room key and had to get help from the front desk a few times to open the door.
On the plus side, there was big, clean balcony to enjoy spectacular sunsets. In the morning, I could see fishing boats out at sea while listening to the surf crashing onto the shore. Breakfast was quite good. The chicken rice porridge was delicious and there were also sweet local desserts one would expect to see at tea time. On the beach behind the hotel, you can walk a bit to find many stalls selling cheap but tasty local food that you can eat right there on the beach. The beach is quite long but not well maintained as there was quite a bit of rubbish.
In sum, I found the staff at the hotel genuinely warm and friendly and the location is good which made up for all the negatives of staying at this hotel.

I stayed in this hotel for three days. The cheapest room is big enough for two people and one baby. It has nice and clean rooms, good swimming pool, yummy breakfast with plenty of choices. Good wifi, beautiful view of Padang beach, most of the staffs were nice although some of them need to teach how to smile more. Overall, I satisfied with the service.

The hotel is old, and when I mean old, I mean is falling apart. Hotel fixtures are ridiculous. It seems it was build in the 1950 and since then it has never been renovated.
Dirty, dirty, dirty as many hotel and places in Indonesia, but this is on the worst side.

Smoke smell everywhere.

Swimming pool, for me, unusable, just in the middle of the crowd: would you swim when aside of the swimming pool are walking by hundreds of people?

The beach we were told is not usable and we had to walk 1 km to find a good beach: and I specifically asked my local guide to bring me in a hotel with pool and beach access ....

Restaurant was kind of ok if you like Indonsian food.

Lobby sofa seems also from the 1950 and since then never been clean from the dust.

Disgusting.

I last stayed at this hotel shortly after the 2009 Padang earthquake. Most of the cracks in the building have now been plastered over and painted. The seaview rooms have a nice view of the pool and ocean, and a view of the decrepit roof of the restaurant and miscellaneous aircon machinery. The bedrooms are tired, bathrooms need removal of mould from the bathtub area. All bedroom cabinetwork bears the scrapes and scratches of years. The food in the restaurant is poor, you can expect a cold breakfast.
The hotel claims to be 4 star but that is entirely subjective.

Room Tip: Get an ocean front room as high as possible to avoid tsunami problems.

We arrived here after a boat trip from the Mentawai Surf Resort. We were checked into a day use room.
The room rate included a very average breakfast buffet, warm milk, no pastries, most of the hot food had been sitting for some time, coffee was cold.

The staff were helpful, the room was clean. The beach was very close but not very inviting.

As a short term stay it served its purpose. We got a few hours sleep despite the hammering on the floor below
