“Cockroaches”
Reviewed August 27, 2014

Our first room had many cockroaches then in the second, which we took, we found a cockroach when we were in bed. The bathroom hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. However, after being in the jungle for so long we were happy to have a TV and air con so our one night passed easily. Wouldn't rate the breakfast either. Staff tried to help us but I think over-charged for the airport transport.

Room Tip: Look in the drawers where the cockroaches live.

I was originally booked into this hotel for three nights but I quickly decided to change the hotel after having some unpleasant experience in the room including getting brown water out of the tab in the sink in the bathroom, seeing cockroaches in the room, and seeing brownish towels. My room had a window but it was a fake window, so the room was basically dark. The room was also not very clean and it made me wonder if the room/bathroom was ever cleaned. Probably due to local water, everything (towel, bedsheets, bed cover, etc) was brownish. Water was also leaking from the shower and the water was never hot but only slightly warm. The staff at the reception was friendly and willing to help but it was difficult to communicate as they did not speak English.

The hotel provided breakfast but I could not find anything that I felt like eating. Basically they had whtie toast, white rice, and fried chicken. The hotel also provided free wifi.

Will surely not stay here even if I come back to Medan in the future.

Fortunately we only stated here on two different nights. My impression was that there is an anti-western approach from the staff.
The information provided on boookings.com is inaccurate. For one there is a claim that rooms have a minibar. There are no minibars in any rooms.
On our first check -in it was quite clear that there was no booking. The fist room we were shown was a so-called deluxe room and was very poorly presented and despite the fact that we had requested a non-smoking room the room reeked. We requested a new room which was provided for an additional fee and for the extra money we gained a sofa and a very noisy and probably never serviced air-conditioner.
Both of the rooms had been visited by cleaning staff but whether a lot of cleaning actually took place was questionable. Also both rooms has windows looking into a large reception/convention space. The breakfast was possibly the worst meal we experienced on the entire trip.

On our return a week later we were more prepared to confront the desk staff ; this time we were met by two women who had a much friendlier and professional approach to hospitality than the gentlemen who and did receive a better treatment and a slightly better room on the first floor.

The is time the shower drain was blocked and the outlet from the hand basin was not connected to the basin.

There is obviously a very clear disconnect between what the management of this hotel think they are running and what the staff are actually doing.

We were told by our taxi friendly and very helpful taxi-driver from Medan Airport that Medan was not a good place for tourists and our experience at this hotel bears him out.

On the other side the location turned out to be quite good with an ATM just down the road at the School, a western gelati shop (expensive but good) next door, some great restaurants on the adjoining main street and a wonderful little gallery.batik store just down the road past the ATM.

Also of interest,we took a tuk-tuk back from a restaurant and our rider got lost, finally delievering us to the Grand Kanaya Hotel some distance away. The security staff and concierge there couldn't have been more helpful in arranging a taxi for us and getting us back to the right hotel.

Room Tip: The best way to get a good room is to stay somewhere else.

After 4 attempts at taking us to our room... (the first was two single beds when we had booked a double, the second room they gave us had dirty towels and linen in it, the third again two single beds, then the fourth.... dirty looking linen but we took it because we were exhausted and just wanted to sleep!)
Shower was blocked so it flooded the whole bathroom. Went and asked for more toilet paper at reception (as we were only given a roll which had 1/4 left on it), at first the person at reception ignored me, then when I asked for toilet paper he said we couldn't have anymore, then an older gentleman (I assume a manager) came out and told the man at reception to get me the toilet paper which he then did.
We had also asked them to book a taxi to the airport for us when we checked in for the following morning. When we checked in the morning, nothing was booked the guy said he would call the taxi now.... hmmmm. Then the older gentleman took over and arranged a taxi for us which arrive 25 mins later. It didn't quite add up for central medan where taxis are everywhere... we think he might have booked with someone he knows rather than booking us the quickest taxi.

Anyway... perhaps we had a bit of bad luck? But we definitely wouldn't stay here again even for a one night stopover.

We arrived in the middle of the night to some confusion about our online booking. Thankfully, it was sorted and they quickly prepared a room for us.

The room was once nicely decorated, but has now seen better days. It was, however clean and functional.

The hotel is located in a nice suburban area of the city near the university and the old airport. It is a short taxi journey to the centre, but only a five minute walk to the nearest convenience shop and laundry.

We also found a nice Japanese restaurant, only a five minute walk away. The sate padang from the stall across the road from the hotel is great too.

There are no atm’s close by, but there’s a plentiful supply in the centre.

Breakfast is served in the next door café. It is all Indonesian fare, but all tasty and plentiful. This café is also open throughout the day serving nice food.

It was a great find in Medan, most other hotels don’t seem to be as good value.

After Long flight from Jakarta and found the confortable and quite location hotel at the middle of Medan city.

Arrive at the hotel the guard very helful to opening door entrance of the hotel lobby, reception desk look very cosy and confortable lobby, small room but very homey all there like your home,
staffs very friendly and helful.

The ladys at the reception will call your name every time your pass the lobby, and asking who was the room, sleep whell and anything for her to know how to improve their hotel.

We are very happy with the breakfast menu, every morning the sumatran food welcoming your day for your brakfast, havy and tasty food, their provide also bread and fruit salad too.

Room Tip: 3rd floor with the city view.

Good location, not far from shopping centres. Rooms are decent, worth spending a little more in Medan than staying at budget places! Had a room right on the ground floor next to reception which wasn't ideal, but other than that, the hotel is clean. I'd try and get a room down the hall or a floor up rather than being next to the lobby. We had a lot of power outages the night I was there but the generator was put on immediately each time.
