“A must visit if you are in medan”
Reviewed September 9, 2013 via mobile

I am totally in love with the house. I am surprised to be some of the originally antiques and furnitures are still very well preserved. The photos on the walls tell a lot of history of the family and their contributions to medan. I was in the blue mansion in penang but this beat it all!!! This is definitely a jewel in medan city. You can afford to miss all other building but definately not this one!!!

“Local History”
Reviewed September 7, 2013

We stayed 2 nights in Medan on the way back from Lake Toba. We decided to visit this place because we did not know where else to go and this was close by where we stayed.

This is a mansion built by a Chinese immigrant who went from rags to riches during the time of the Dutch occupation. That by itself is an astonishing story of human persistence and entrepreneurship. He did a lot of charity work and development of the city. His legacy is those charity work he did and this mansion he built. It is typical colonial Chinese architecture with lots of shutter windows. It boasts rooms for reception of dignitaries at the fron, prayer rooms at the back and a huge dance/ party hall upstairs. It still has a lot of the original furnishings like the chandeliers. In fact a number of the furnishings in the whole house were original, including a very elaborate mother of pear inlaid chair from China and furniture from Europe.

Tourists from China may appreciate this attraction more than visitors from other countries simply because they can appreciate the story better. The architecture and historical furnishing are fascinating because they were preserved well.

Our tour was very pleasant because the tour guide took her time to explain things to us and was very gracious and friendly.

Entering Tjong A Fie is like entering old Chinese Heritage in Singapore.. The building itself is quite large, and definitely recommended for Chinese Heritage Lovers..
