“Western Touch in Indonesia”

Bukittinggi Clock Tower
Reviewed December 27, 2012

Jam Gadang represents old time Dutch Glory in Indonesia. It is one of historical landmark remaining in Indonesia. Many landmarks here were incidentally torn down by local. Pity.
Jam Gadang uniqueness was its number 4 in Roman, it is supposed to be written "IV", but here was written "IIII".
Around Jam Gadang you can see and buy and eat anything in Minang (West Sumatran) Heritage. Drop by to Pasar Atas Bukittinggi and get what you want..

This is the landmark of Bukittinggi. It is situated in the central of Bukittinggi. It is not complete to come to Bukittinggi if you do not visit this clock tower. It was built in Dutch period. For the first time Its top is not like what we see now, Minangkabau traditional house. In Dutch era, It was chicken. In Japanese era it was Japanese traditional house. Now, after the independence of Indonesia it is changed into "Bagonjong", the Minangkabau traditional house.

It's not everyday you could hear the sound of the grand bell of Jam Gadang Bukittingi, right at the side of your ear. And it was really shocking yet funny, eventhough we've been waiting for it to toll. *giggling

The way up to this leaning tower was pretty scary, yet entertaining to see how old watch machine works.

And the view from this tower is amazing. You could spread your gaze around the town of Bukittinggi. Mountains Merapi and Singgalang stood right in front of you. And it's frightening to stand on the outside little porch on the peak of this tower.

Its a pretty nice tower, and the surrounds give a couple good views over the pretty ugly town. The market nearby seeks all the usual stuff while the shipping malls have some more up market shops, the best place for clothes though is down past the KFC where there are a few shops seeking local designer gear, high quality and some nice designs for a good price. not the dirt cheap market stuff but still very reasonable.

Nobody would travel to Bukittinggi without visting the Clock Tower. It is located on the town square where locals hang out during their leisure time. It is also very close to the markets
