“A little tired and needs work”
Reviewed May 16, 2013

Enjoyed our stay in a lovely bungalow with great views of ocean and sunset. However the hotel grounds, swimming pool and buildings need money spent on them to bring them back to a good standard. Did not use spa or diving facilities. Hotel is about 15-20 mins from Manado town. Staff are a little nonchalant and laid back.

Stayed here end March - beginning of April 2013. Resort was "rustic".. (i.e a little old) quite secluded and a car is needed to get to the city centre of Manado. (about 30 to 45 min drive including traffic) We stayed in a sea view bungalow, very clean but a little old. There is an indoor and outdoor shower. It was quite unique but would have preferred it if there was a door to separate the indoor and outdoors to prevent mosquitos from flying in from the jungle outside. Had some dragonflies bother me while I was attending to important "business" on the toilet! ;) Would have preferred more lights at night when walking to the bungalow as it is really pitch dark, got "lost" a couple of times trying to look for our bungalow.
Loved the diving facilities. The dive team are very friendly and look out for you while you are snorkelling or diving. Very convenient to just get onto the boat from the pier at the hotel. A big PLUS compared to if we had stayed in the city centre. Great service on the boat too, food and drinks were provided. Felt very comfortable and at ease with the dive team. Saw huge turtles and the corals at Bunaken were the most pristine I have ever seen.
Also took a day tour to the colour changing lake and traditional market. there was just my husband and I so the tour was practically personalized. Our guide was a female (sorry, forgot her name!) but she was great, very friendly and informative.
Will definitely be back in Tasik Ria again if I have the chance.
Would recommend ppl who want to do diving or snorkelling to stay here. If you would prefer to go shopping at the malls in Manado a hotel in the city centre would be more suitable.

Stayed in small group at Tasik Ria early March 2013 for 2 weeks. Planned to dive Bunaken and surrounding area with Tasik Ria dive centre based on hotel site.
Hotel was typical of this part of the world. Our room (pool view) was clean, very spacious, water was very hot and the air conditioning worked. During the week when it failed our request to housekeeping to deal with this was acted upon promptly with a satisfactory outcome.
Hotel has great pool with bar and the wonderful Fidel takes great care of his customers and nothing is too much trouble for him. We ate at the jetty in the evenings and were served a buffet style dinner of Indonesian style food which was excellent. We did not have one bad meal during our stay, in fact the choice of fish in the evenings was a delight, all of us eating were very satisfied with what was on offer. Breakfasts were ample in choice and again buffet style so you could have as much or as little as you liked. Most of us stuck to eggs and toast (which was cooked over hot coals!) or cereal as we were all diving. Lunch on the boats during the day was incredible- fish or meat, rice and noodles, home made cookies, tea, coffee or chocolate and pancakes or cake for afternoon tea.
The diving. This was a combined 6th return for us to Bunaken National Park. The wall diving is truly incredible. Visibility varied from 15-30m+ depending on where we were diving and weather conditions. When the sun came out the walls were spectacular- I have never seen so many turtles! Monika and her team were excellent guides and provided, in our experience, a good balance between guiding customers and showing us harder to spot species alongside allowing us to enjoy the dives and take photographs. A particular big thank you to Yanix at this point, his guiding style ticked all of our boxes and he made our underwater holiday one to remember. Underwater conditions during our stay were mostly calm and easy to dive, we encountered a few fast drifts but only to be expected diving in this area. Water temperature a balmy 28, sea state calm and flat. Boat journey to the national park took about an hour so a good chance to relax and take in the scenery.
Transfers to and from airport good. Resort runs day trip to Lembeh to dive, definitely worth the trouble, good to see North Sulawesi from the road. Diving here was different, muck diving, saw some odd species, very enjoyable day.
In all a very pleasant stress free two weeks, thank you to Dan and the team for taking so much trouble to make sure we were all OK and had what we needed, he definitely understands the concept of good customer service.
Without doubt we will go back -good food, excellent diving and super hot weather, cold beer and smiley happy staff, what more could you ask for?

Last week, I've been there for three days. Unfortunately it's strictly business. I went there without even touching the sea! I visited the beach which was in the backyard only once. It's a nice, clean, and serene beach. It felt like I was standing by the lake. Very peaceful...
This resort located about 30 mins from Manado, an hour from the airport (add 30 mins if on busy hours like in the morning & afternoon). Already inside the district of Minahasa. Unlike Java & Bali, it's almost in the middle of nowhere. Across the street is jungle, and beach in the back. Very quiet around here. Make sure you already bring your own snacks, beverages, cigarrettes, because there's no mart around. Of course the hotel provide some in a limited variety & a bit pricey.
The rooms & landscape around the hotel is somehow "antique"...as if the architectural design stops at late ’80s. But it's clean. They maintained the facilities well although some area were seem 'deserted'. The room were surprisingly large, clean, & well maintained too. Just like the architecture, the interior design stops at late 80’s too. But, since it's clean then I really don't mind at all. Electricity & water worked very well.
Not much of variety could be found on breakfast, though. They just served bread with jams & chocolate, rice, and several local dishes. The chef was pretty good at cooking local dishes actually. You should try some. But beware, the people here like their dishes rather spicy & hot. Pick cautiously.
Facilities : there are 2 swimming pools, in the center area & beachside. The beachside pool was creepy because it's quiet & nearly nobody around. The water is good & refreshing, but need some cleaning, though. If you like or want to try diving, there is a diving center facility on the beach. It's a pity I hadn't much time to try it. There's also a Spa but I couldn't say more since I'm not a Spa-guy.
In conclusion, It was a pleasant stay, but if I were to comeback to Manado I would try someplace else.

Room Tip: Choose the beachside if you plan to meditate. It's very quiet & remote it's spooks me...

Encouraged by raving reviews of the diving in Bunakken, we booked our trip from Bali to Manado and our stay in Tasik Ria. Pickup in the middle of the night (01:00 am) at the airport, an hour's drive and we were there. Friendly staff, nice sea view bungalow, not stylish but very clean. Cupboard had a working safe, but we couldn't close the cupboards door...Al fresco bathroom is ok, as long as it's not pouring down like it did when we were there.
The breakfast, although served by again very friendly staff, was really nothing to write home about, there is definitely room for improvement, especially on the coffee. Do bring your own Nescafe, it's necessary!
The Spa was good, the ladies very friendly and did a good job on us. Went there 3 times. Frankie did a great trip with us up to a viewing tower on a volcano crater rim, where we met a group of locals, friendly, open and eager to make contact and talk, take pictures etc. Lunch was in a local restaurant serving freshwater carp with chili, a real treat if you can stomach the heat!

Diving was ....ok. The well-equipped boat took us to the divesites in a 2 hours trip, we had a 30 seconds introduction to the place and in we jumped. 4 divers and a guide. down it went to 28 meters where there was almost nothing to be seen, maybe a tiny critter or two, but it helps to empty the tanks. When we reached the nicer areas around 15 to 8 meters, where there was some sealife to be seen, and also some colors, our tanks were quite empty and we had to get out. 1 hour maximum dive time, even with using nitrox. This was repeated 2 more times and then we drove back to the resort. Not awe-inspiring at all, diving in Bali was definitely better, or try Komodo for some real treats!

Due to heavy rain and a change in our plans we had to leave one day earlier, which was ok for us, because we ran out of ideas what to do. Lord it rained! After 2 more days of lazyness, unimpressive breakfasts and very nice dinners we took the 06:30 flight back to Bali and were happy to leave. Get me right, it was not bad nor overpriced, I just don't feel like going back. Been there, done that.

Thanks for your overall positive review. you are correct it certainly does rain, but you were here in the peak of the rainy season. I have checked your dive manifest and it seems you were diving on some of the better sites here, most of our customers rave about them, but diving is a also a personal take on things..large , small?? Regarding the breakfast, we offer a fairly comprehensive choice and also additional requests are welcome, if you think about returning, we will be more than happy to accommodate any realistic food preferences. we do hope we see you again.

We spent a week diving with Monica and her crew - lovely, well trained people, and pristine coral reefs and walls. Some of the best diving I have ever experienced.
The resort itself is like a tired gem, once smart and stylish but now overdue for a full makeover. Higher spec cleaning to bring the sparkle back to baths basins and tiles would help, but a significant ammount of money needs to be spent to bring the rooms and pathways etc up to standard. The swimming pool is fabulous!
Dan, the Manager, really tries hard to paper over the maintenance cracks by giving really friendly, first class customer service. The restaurant menu is quite extensive but many options seem to taste (and look) the same.

Room Tip: Some of the pathways are uneven and slippery so pick a room close to the main building.

We were very pleased to have you and the group here. many thanks for your comments on the diving. We agree the resort is a little tired and after 15 years is in need of a fairly extensive revamp. We are pleased to tell you that this is happening this year! The pathways are being repaired, three more rooms will be wheelchair accessible ,giving us a total of 5, and the bathrooms in the pool view rooms are being turned into "wet rooms" the baths being removed and a stone facing put in giving more traditional feel. We do hope you will be returning to sample more great diving,( and more food choices) in a new improved Tasik Ria .

This was my first trip to Manado and Tasik Ria and i thoroughly enjoyed myself. It was also my first time diving and Monica is a great instructor who ensured that i was comfortable with every step before moving on to the next subject. The actual diving itself was wonderful and the guides/crew were all friendly and knowledgable about the dive sites.

Back at the resort Dan is also great and always seemed to be around making sure that everything was alright and that everyone was comfortable. The overall feel is of a home away from home. The resort is nicely spread out, charmingly rustic and has a nice pool and jetty bar.

All in all it was a great experience and i am already planning a return trip.

Thanks for your positive review. Monica is a thorough professional. All the staff here seem to try that bit harder than in most places. We are happy you decided to do your course with us and we were able to provide a safe and well organised facility in which to do so, and a lovely place to relax in afterwards. We look forward to seeing you back here soon.
