I have stayed at both Istanaku 1 and 2 (which is located across the road). The hostels have been decorated with love- there are interesting cartoonish illustrations on the walls, and various other quirky paraphernalia throughout, which I really appreciate (though this may not appeal to everyone).

The hostels are also extremely affordable, and the staff are really friendly and proactive. As well as breakfast, there is a restaurant which serves meals though the day.

The hostels are located a little bit far away from the larger malls, but still fairly close to the centre of town. If you have not already, you should download the Go-Jek app so you can travel around Manado affordably.

The area around the hostels can be a bit noisy at night. The rooms can be a little cold- but you can find an extra blanket in the cupboards if needed.

the rooms are very nice and clean. comfortable beds, air-conditioned breakfast, roof chilling area at your disposal, nice breakfast, funky cozy interior, elevator for luggages, but the best part is the friendly staff. they helped us a lot with many things. we came back twice and would not hesitate to come back again. I would recommend to pay a bit extra choose the deluxe rooms, the standard are bit small, but good enough if you wanna stay only one night.

Room tip: standard rooms are bit smaller, de luxe are not that much expensive comparing to standard.

Very friendly staff and extra clean rooms but the hotel is so LOUD ! We were woken up multiple times both during the night and in the morning. The sound was magnified in the corridors and people seemed to be walking around and talking (shouting ?) all night long. I definitly do not recommand this hotel for anyone in need of a good night's sleep.

There are 2 istanaku guesthouses in manado. They are located opposite each other on the same road.

We stayed at istanaku guesthouse 2. Our primary reason for choosing this hotel was it's location - close to souvenier shops (including christine klappertaat), and close to eateries and cafes.

The hotel lobby is decorated quirkily with colourful murals. The staff were polite and helpful.

It's a 4 storey building but there isnt a lift for guests. There's a saying on the wall near the stairs 'There is no elevator to success. You need to take the stairs'
But there is a lift at the back of the building which the staff use to carry your luggage. So having to use the stairs wasnt really an issue (unless you have knee problems!)

The rooms were of average size. You cant fit an extra bed. Bedding was comfortable for a good nights sleep. Blankets were thin....it just meant you couldnt have the AC on full blast. The room and bathroom were clean. The shower was excellent - a proper one, not one of those installed boxes. The water pressure was good and hot water was available. There was also a TV in the room.

Breakfast was included in the cost of the room. I am not sure if the food is halal. Breakfast was simple - chicken/beef soup, fried rice and bread (+spreads).

All in all, our stay at istanaku guesthouse 2 was pleasant and comfortable. It was value for what we paid for. I suggest requesting a room on the 1st floor.

PS. There is a fridge and freezer in the lobby where you can purchase bottled/box beverages and ice cream!
