If you are used to 5-star hotels in Jakarta and are looking for "Western" food and style, expect this one to be a bit short of the mark - but still very acceptable, and much more affordable at US$100 or thereabouts. Breakfast buffet is okay, fruit not quite as good quality as I've had elsewhere. The rooms are great, comfortable beds, nice bathrooms, good selection of TV channels in various languages. Swimming pool is a bit small, and lounging a bit uncomfortable and noisy because the main street is just over the wall, unseen but definitely heard.

Make sure you get the sea view rooms, the hotel is right on the street that runs along the shore and the scenery and collection of ships waiting outside the harbour looks great. If you've done any research on Makassar you don't come for the beach life though - there is none to be had along the waterfront. But DO try to get to the old harbour, where you can see the wooden cargo boats being loaded.

Imperial Aryaduta Makassar is the only 5-star hotel in Makassar. In my opinion, this hotel should do more for 5-star hotel reputation. Location is good, facing the ocean, and in the city central. But, all things in this hotel looks tired. Breakfast not special. Cigarette smoke everywhere in air conditioned lobby. Again, not many choice in Makassar if you want to stay in 4/5 star hotel. Hope this hotel will be better in the future.

Until 2002 I found this hotel still good, but after that getting worse. The famous barbeque in town is no more to find, very bad now, the food in Bellini also so tasteless. The cake in the cafe is no more OK, the slow service in reception and cafe. Very big pitty.

we have just returned from a 5 days at the imperial aryaduta hotel. hotel itself is peaceful and without the often irritating loud "background" music. check-in is fast and efficient with a pleasant welcome drink. upon arrival luggage is taken immediately inside and we were welcomed with a warm smile. the staff is very welcoming which came across to us as "that's the way they are", if you understand what I mean. we requested a smoke free room on a smoke free floor and as high as possible. even though the room did have a smoke alarm there were 2 cigarette burn holes in the curtains! we have seen on many occasions during our short stay guuests running around with cigarettes on non smoking floors! room was spotless but I have to add that Sulawesi and/or the General manager of the imperial Aryaduta has to learn a lot with regard to room furnishings. in the corner of the room was at first sight a lovely easy chair but just before you want to sit down you will see questionable brown skid marks. the room comes with one cupboard which includes the room safe. there is only hanging space. opposite the beds is a refrigerator unit (build in) with a minute section to put some "folded" clothing. the beds are excellent and wide - we choose 2 separate beds, and the pillows fantastic. the bathroom is spacious with a good flushing toilet however the the paying guest is only provided with 1 sample of shower gel and one sample of shampoo. the bath towels were lovely and fluffy yet the bath/shower was your worst nightmare come true! the most revolting mold in the tile/bath cracks and we were constantly surprised that the mushrooms were not sprouting out on a daily basis. we did point it out but nobody took notice. the menu of the Imperial Aryaduta was excellent and cateres for every western fancy incl. goulash soup and zwiebelbbraten, however the "asian" selection was a very pityfull number of 3dishes. tourist come also to taste the local cuisine and indonesia has fantastic dishes. eating outside the hotel is at its best very, very "iffy" however right next to the hotel (left) they are renovating an extremely inviting restaurant!

makassar itself is interesting if you are interested in its history, meaning that it was one of the Dutch colony's and part of the "spice islands". fort Rotterdam is extremely interesting and they have a good selection of VOC porcelain. a trip to the "Raja" is also unique. we were embraced as long lost travellers from outer space. even though the people in this kampung are painful poor - no electricity/running water/gas/tv/radio they all do have a mobile and with a mobile I mean one which takes video as well as photo's, so we were photographeed many, many times with many terrible snotty babies and kids, some of them with horrendous ouzing absecces. a trip to the closest island revealed the same poverty but the people are willing to share what they have, they are warm and we felt that in the year 2008 it is a unique miracle that these people are totally naive and have not embraced tourist and their never ending capability to produce money! swimming is extremely dangerous as the Indian ocean and the Pacific ocean meet, which means that the current is deadly! a drop of 20 meters or more is nothing so be extremely aware of diving/snorkeling ANYWARE IN THAT REAGION! we had a great time and we feel privileged to have met local islanders who were warm and friendly. this is in stark contrast with the Sulawesi/makassar city. wanting and getting a taxi means they want you to pay the full price per person, meaning that a trip to the "carrefour supermarket" *(with attached 3 more small malls) cost rupiah 40.000 so you will have to start brushing up on your bargaining skills! I bought some lovely pearls and absolute beautiful silk which is cheap, so girls, go for it and have fun!

It was the third time I stayed in this hotel.
It is quite nice. The service is good, the facilities are not bad at all and the F&B outlets are very nice.
Every time I am in Makassar is for business and always for one night. The hotel is fairly new, clean and well catered for most needs.
I would probably not stay here on vacation, however I think I would not go to Makassar on vacation. The hotel is in the center of the city, therefore it is quite busy all around.

I do not know what other hotels are in the city but I doubt there would be anything better than this one.

If you are looking for a nice clean property, with good service, helpful staff and reasonable food in Makassar then you have hit the jackpot. Stay at the Imperial Aryaduta Hotel and you will be a winner.
