“Duty Free Shopping in Batam”
Reviewed May 23, 2011

A great place to go for shopping is Batam Island in Indonesia. There are around 7 malls you can visit and all Duty Free, with friendly staff and lots of variety. Everything is cheap including food. They have the latest in clothes, shoes, etc and all the top brands.
Taxi's are very cheap and a great way to explore the island.
You can get there by fast ferry from Singapore which is only 45mins away. Ferries have comfortable seating and TV's on board for entertainment. Hotels are comfortable and cheap too. The only thing I could fault is the fact there is no travel info in the hotels and some of the staff have limited English.
The best of the mall's was Nagoya Hill which is over 4 levels of air conditioned shopping. In the basement is the electrical/computers area with the rest of the mall mainly food/clothes/luggage. You can purchase 3 perfumes for around $10US, shoes from $2 up, jewellery from $2 up, clothes from $10 up. These are just a few items of the many available. Massages, nails, hair etc are all there too. For example to get your hair cut, coloured it costs from around $50. Shops are opened from 10 to 10 in most places so you can get a good sleep in or get your fitness training in before you go in the up to date gym at your hotel. We stayed for the week(4 adults) in a 2 bed with lounge apartment including free breakfast and at least 4 evening meals at the hotel for around $1100.
The only thing you wont find is probably the latest apple products although you can get a lot of their accessories.
The weather is hot and steamy just like Singapore, with the mornings and evenings a little cooler.

“Batam trip ,the 1st and the last”
Reviewed March 28, 2011

I just came back from Batam.Stay for 2 days, just a short trip to relieve the bustling and stressful work at Singapore.
Batam, this is my 1st time to this island. So far not for me.As this island is not really a tourist attraction.More to shopping only. There is nothing there,i repeat again, there is nothing there.
For shopping, most the items u can get it in Singapore, only a bit cheaper but if u add up with the ferry teminal fare still cheaper in Singapore.I went to DC Mall, there ,i can tell you,the air con at this mall is not cold enough,i am sweating in there. Not advisable to shop there esp with children or for the old,not healthy.I went to Carefour ,also this place is still new.A lot of shops there still not open yet except a few and Carefour only.Lastly Batam Centre, this is not bad but still the standard still not there yet.If you guys want to get fake items here, not advisable. The item may very cheap but the quality is very bad like branded t-shirts,jeans and Dvds. The bags is ok.For the rest, better get it in JB,much more better fakes.
