Bromo Cottages Hotel

I followed a large group of students to visit Mount Bromo and from what I understand, this hotel is the most centrally located. The landscaping is nice and the view of the mountains pleasant. But the room was a real disappointment. The room was extremely dim due to the lack of lights. There was no kettle which would be useful in cold weather. The bed was far too soft and lumpy. The wooden walls were too thin so I could hear a lot of surrounding noise. Breakfast was very limited and dinner was nothing much to shout about.

Bromo cottages is an excellently situated hotel on the slope of hill. Infact, its the only good hotel over the bromo mountain. Its a recently constructed hotel with renovation going on. The road leading to hotel is not good and it has a sharp slope also, make sure your brakes are working properly. The view is excellent as all the rooms face the valley. The good thing about the resort is that they have sliding lifts as it has many floors (under process at the time of visit). Staff is friendly but the room services are bit slow. They provide with excess of food per person and its too much for one person. Its all included in room rates as there is no good restaurant also nearby. All shops in tosari close by 4pm!! The ride to the Penanjakan view point and Bromo starts at 3am and finishes by 10am... It was a memorable day spending out there as you get to see so many new things over a period of 24 hrs. However the hotel is bit costly ranging to almost 150 US $ per night

I travelled a lot and never stayed in a hotel like this. In one word: miserable!

they take advantage of their location and the lack of other options. Service was unpersonal and everything was too expensive! By far the most expensive hotel we stayed in java and by far the worst. Room for us dollar 90 and restaurant charges 55.000 (ex 21% tax) for a small beer.

We call this robbery! Never again.

If you want to visit Bromo, this is certainly the best place to stay, and it's pretty close to the volcanoes. But this doesn't make it a good hotel. I must say that the staff was nice and friendly. The room was very basically equipped and rather dark, with a limited amount of hot water in the morning, and freezing temperatures during the night. Cleanliness was not perfect, but OK. The dinner is really very expensive for Java, and the breakfast wasn't up to any standards at all. On the other hand: there is a lovely verandah in front of each room, and if you come early enough and if you are lucky to have good weather, you will have gorgeous views there, with a perfect sunset. So: it's OK for one night, but I wouldn't stay there if there really was a better alternative.

I have to agree with previous comments: the position is excellent if you are visiting the Bromo, but everything else is definitely below average: service rather unprofessional, rooms dark and cold at night. Dinner extremely expensive for Java.
On the bright side: they make a very good ginger tea.
If you arrive there before 6pm and you go for a walk in the village there, that will be an unforgettable experience for your trip! I mean it, it's safe and fun.

most expensive hotel in Java - poor service and junk food - but not much alternative if you want to see the great Bromo volcano....

So, if i would go back and if Bromo is on the list to see, i would try to arrive in the morning and find a Bed somewhere in the village - the food on the street looked much much better than the expensive hotel junk food. Sorry for the wording - but that is the worst accomidation in the 4 weeks Asia in August 2012.

If you do not dare to come up there and find a room on short notice, just stay in a hotel down and start the day 2-3 hours earlier......

Room Tip: you leave a 4am to see the Bromo volcano. So, i do not need a great hotel - but perhaps the prici...

There is some sort of temple or bar next to the hotel, which blasted music constantly. Unfortunately we seemed to be in the room closest to the music- the music blared continously the whole day and most of the night. I complained to the hotel staff who didnt understand what I was saying- they laughed politely and said 'ok, ok'. I dont think they did anything to investigate or stop the music. We hardly got any sleep due to the music. I would advise against booking at Bromo cottages for this reason alone- considering you have to wakeup at around 3 am to get to mount Bromo, you want to get good sleep the night before.
The other thing which majorly annoyed me was that the Bromo cottages advertise 'hair dryer' as one of the facilities being available. There was no hair dryer in room (no surprise there, rooms are very basic). When I enquired at reception the staff told me 'the only hair dryer in the hotel is broken and wont be fixed for a long time'.

In terms of the room, it is clean but very sparsely furnished.
The bed sheets very clean and the mattress was moderately comfortable. Surprisingly no insects/mosquitoes in the room.
Bathroom was clean but horrendously basic and ugly.

Overall not horrendous but definitely not a nice experience either. I guess it is ok if you are looking for a cheap one night stay before visiting Mount Bromo. I would definitely not stay there more than one night.
