We were told that Surabaya came from Javanese Suro and Boyo which depict the fight between the shark and crocodile but some stories said that they were white shark and white crocodile whereas the monument in front of Surabaya Zoo the crocodile is in dark color which is different from the front page of Surabaya Tourism material. This may cause confusion but the sculptural work was neatly and masterfully done.

I just think this monument is a bit not obviously enough as a public monument. Need more sign board so people will be more "aware" about this and not only skip it, especially it is located near to the star hotels.

Surabaya is an ancient city, with one mosque dating back half a millenium. It also has one of the most remarkable collections of colonial architecture in South East Asia, most of it completely neglected and time-worn. The historic buff will find much to entertain them in this overlooked city. It is nothing but a disgrace then that this ugly, kitschy monument set in front of the zoo for kids is more highly rated than dozens of historic gems. Honestly, turn left and right in front of this dubious statue and you will see half a dozen more architecturally impressive buildings.
