Surabaya can be pretty jarring but this place will soothe it all away. The tropical gardens and historical architecture are beautiful and it's a pleasure to just wander around. The room was gorgeous and it's worth upgrading to an executive suite for the full experience - separate living room area, enormous bedroom and spacious bathroom. It's well maintained and clean, and apart from the festivities of fast-breaking during Ramadan, it's very quiet and peaceful. Even then, the dinner was always over by 9pm so not an issue at all.
There's a lovely swimming pool and gym and I had a truly excellent massage in the spa - as a spa junkie I can honestly say it's one of the best massages I've had anywhere.
You can easily access Tungjungan Plaza (TP) on foot in about five minutes and there you will find anything and everything you need. There are also lots of options for eating out if you don't want to eat at the hotel.
If you've been travelling round and roughing a bit or even if you're in Surabaya for business, try at least a night or two here just for the experience.
This hotel really rates as one of the great historical hotels in Asia.

Previous reviewers have said it all....but I have to add more of the same. We booked 4 days here, and the first 2 days we didn't leave the hotel until we went to the shopping mall to eat in the evening. From the moment we checked in every single member of staff was polite and friendly and totally efficient in every way. The building, the stunning gardens and the rooms are just amazing. I we spent hours just wandering around. The peaceful ambience makes you forget you're in a bustling city. I agree with others that the pool and gym are great too. There is nothing negative to say about this hotel. It's for good reason that it's #1 on Tripadvisor. The value for money here is incredible, I hope rates stay as they are because we can't wait to return, and we definitely will. Thank you to everyone at The Majapahit.

This hotel is absolute five star, heritage luxury at an extremely reasonable price. To stay in this level of hotel in Singapore (ie Raffles), New York or anywhere in England for example would set you back at LEAST ten times as much!!!

We took an upgrade and were given a suite which went beyond our expectations. It was HUGE! It was absolute luxury, from the big, soft bed and oversized, comfy pillows, to the luxury bathroom. Full satellite TV on a flat screen and all other mod cons are provided to a high standard.

The rest of the hotel is absolutely huge, and very beautiful. It looked like parts of it at least had recent renovation to a high standard, and the architecture is simply stunning. You will walk around with your chin on the floor as you are shown to your room, believe me. The hotel is quite extensive inside, and it is very easy to 'lose' yourself in the best possible way inside it. You are in effect hidden away from the rest of Surabaya, which in my opinion is a good thing, as the town is only useful as a transport hub and we only stayed here as a stopover from Bali on the way to other places in Indonesia, after deciding to spoil ourselves a little before the volcano and jungle trekking. Perhaps this accounts for it's realtively cheap price. Saying that, if you do decide to venture outside, there are a couple of good malls just across the road (if you can negotiate Surabayas ridiculous traffic system). The airport and train station are also very convenient via a taxi.

The swimming pool, and attached gym and spa is perfect for a spot of relaxation, and in the few days we spent there we had it all to ourselves more than half the time; even when there were others there it was never crowded. There are two restaurants, both excellent but a little pricey. But it is worth it for a few days of splurging if your budget can stretch to it. The included breakfast is taken in the lower restaurant and is extremely good. It changes slightly every day, but there is so much choice, from fresh croissants and pastries, to hot meals from a variety of cultures. Fresh fruit and juice is available constantly. There is also an excellent bakery attached to the restaurant that sells great cakes.

The staff are excellent as well, very helpful and friendly, and they seem to hire more than enough people with the express purpose of making sure it feels like you are getting a personal service, and it works! We did have an issue with some of the noise and mess of outside contractors they hired for a wedding that was taking place there, but the manager resolved our complaint and moved our room very quickly and politely.

All in all, this is an amazing luxury heritage hotel that is excellent value. I could not afford to stay in a hotel like this almost anywhere else, especially in my home country, so I was really glad I got the chance to experience it. Now I wish I could win the lottery and move in permanently!

Room Tip: The upgrade is worth it if your budget stretches to it.

We had 2 days here to rest and relax after almost 3 weeks of jungle treks.
It was certainly worth a visit with lovely rooms ( upgrade to a suite if poss!) It is a 'grand hotel' from years gone by but is surrounded on all sides by the hustle and bustle of Surabaya with traffic and prayer calling all night and day. All mod cons are provided to a very high standard in very large rooms with very comfortable beds. The only downside was that it was a little too cold in the room as the a/c was not easy to control, I'm sure we would have had this remedied if we were staying longer.
The facilities include a Chinese restaurant, seafood, deli/cake shop and regular restaurant. All of these are excellent and good value. If you go to the Chinese they offer a choice of dish size, s m l, the small is perfectly enough for 2 so don't get carried away.
The pool and spa are useful to unwind and the massages are very good value and of the highest quality. We both had massages and the facilities therein were top notch with wonderful treatment rooms and showers, baths and the like. If you decide to stay you must try one.
In all a very pleasant stay, I'm not sure we will return as it is not on our holiday radar which is a shame as this was one of the best places we have stayed.
Position wise it is close to the largest shopping mall we ave ever seen. 6 enormous floors full of western companies such as M & S, Levi's, mont blanc, next, Laura Ashley etc etc.....

Room Tip: Choose a suite, try no 35/36 it is at the rear but quite secluded

I loved this hotel, a real gem in the hustle-and-bustle of Surabaya. They really do a great work at keeping this historic complex in good shape, and value-for-money-wise it's not bad either. Location is not perfect, and the entrance is not as nice as the interior, but apart from that I had a wonderful stay. Try the sop buntut in the bottom floor restaurant, or even better have dinner at Sarkies!

This is an colonial hotel from the dutch-colonie time, great ambiance! And located next to Tunjung Mall, so shopping is an good option for the late hours. Nice!

Surabaya gets a bad wrap as the arm pit of Indonesia.
10 million people in this factory city, but wait?!!

A new Mayor and lots of civic pride and the place has changed.
However this said, if the city still scares you and you want solice with unending perfection consider a stay at the Majapahit.

If you are an Ozzie or Yank , you will find the tariff beyond reasonable and down right cheap.

The second hotel built in the Raffles chain, the other being in Rangoon and the most famous (but not the nicest) in Singapore. This hotel has seen its share of history from Japanese internment of British Nationals and the eventual overthrow of the Dutch to Indonesia's Independence......................some place say the ghosts lounge by the pool at midnight.

Our room, was not deluxe by their standards. However by mine it was possibly the nicest room I have ever stayed in. A private little terrace to manicured grounds, leading to THAT POOL.......
Beautifully fitted out with living space seperate from the bedroom and every hot and cold mod-con. you could ever possibly want.

The staff are immaculate; One Butler even giving us a personal tour of the Presidential suite. The employees are very proud of this property and knowledgeable being able to tell you what is original and what is repro.

OMG!
The lead light windows! The Gardens! The EVERYTHING!

A visit to the Sharkey's restaurant for the best Chinese food you will ever eat in your life, and a splash out at the spa is a must................not into spas? You must at least walk in and have a look....................incredible.

Go, stay, and be transported..................than go and work hard in the city.

Room Tip: Visit the web site and look at the room possibilities there, any standard will not disappoint.
