I normally stay at another hotel down the street which unfortunately was full at that time. The good thing about the hotel is the room size and late night room service which was quick. However everything else is just horrible, the worst thing is the staffs attitude. The word customer service is certainly not on their vocabulary. My booking via online was mixed up and the receptionist was too lazy to move faster. Breakfast time was even more horrible. The food lacked of variety, and served cold. The cafe attendant was even colder...or even rude if I may say. Being rude to a hotel guest for no reasons at all especially when you are in the hospitality industry is so unacceptable. The only food edible in the cafe of this self-proclaimed 3-star-hotel were the eggs...and when i wanted to add some more, I was told in a cold manner that every guest only entitled to have 2 eggs/breakfast which wasn't written or informed anywhere before hand. Stay away from this hotel, there are better choices nearby. Overall, I will never return and will not recommend this to anyone!

Traveling to the East Coast by train, we stopped at Surabaya for the night and unwisely chose Hotel Cendana. Described in Lonely Planet as a 'solid, mid-range option with well appointed rooms', it falls woefully short of this promise. Don't get me wrong - I smoke, but the all-pervasive fug filling the building was grim. Smokers in reception, in the lift - and  memorably, a trio (attired solely in underwear) puffed furiously, with their bedroom door open, presumably to let a little fresh air in. Admittedly,  reception were extremely helpful when we complained about the extensive fag burns all over the bedroom carpet - showing us a selection of alternative options. We chose a room with a tiled floor with only mild burns in the shower curtain. The bed was ok and the sheets were clean. Breakfast had a selection of noodles, rice and fruit, which would have appealed if I hadn't stood behind a guest who picked up and inspected each piece of  fried chicken before making her choice. A fried egg (requested fluently in Bahasa) was too much to compute for the member of staff in charge of the egg station. Seriously, save yourself the pain and go elsewhere.

Old and tired hotel.

From the breakfast, the room, the service, the lift, the amenities, the staffs attitude, are so last year. many government meeting during my stay. Yes, it's kinda suit for government hotel. :)

This hotel urgently need a renovation. there are a lot of modern hotel with better price around.

Can be better!!!!

Stay for 3days2nite. The room was OK. Price also cheap around Rp250 - Rp350. Nice decoration and got small courtyard. Very easy to get taxi...coz they already park infront the hotel. Use silverbird or bluebird taxi. location very near to tunjungan plaza and other shopping complex. restaurant just infront the hotel.

Chose this hotel from Lonely Planet. Arrived without a reservation at 6AM and was lucky to get a room. They didn't have one until I asked how to get to another hotel. The room was fine, the price was OK, the breakfast was decent, and the location was good enough. Meals in the restaurant were pretty good, and they had fast internet in the lobby for a reasonable fee. Seems good, right?
The service was indifferent. To be fair, I think that the ones who were seemingly indifferent had a lower level of English competence. This made them more shy. There were four or five staff members.....in the restaurant, the internet, the porters....who spoke better English and were truly friendly. But the place where English is most needed...reception.....it seemed to be lacking. Sometimes they didn't understand relatively simple questions.
The hotel seems full...I was there 4 nights, and their clientele seems mostly Indonesian, despite being in Lonely Planet. So maybe English speaking is not a priority, and I am in THEIR country, after all.
Bottom line....I might stay there again, depending on what else I could find.
