“test your adrenalin here...(its historical place and creepy place at the same time)”
Reviewed March 28, 2014

this building is one of scariest place at indonesia for some people ..
the name lawang sewu means..thousand door..

but for another reason, there is so many historical story in this place

for example, this building is the main office for dutch railway company and the pioneer for train at java (19 century)..and then the building change into japanese headquater..when they invaded java island (1943)

the creeepy story about this building started when japanese use the building for interogation room and tortured room especially to indonesia people who fight for independence, there is 2 tortured room , first at roof top and then at basement floor.

when u visit the basement floor, i recomend do it at night, u will need flashlight and boot (u can rent both of item from the guide), (the basement floor is full with water from nearest river, dutch build this for create cooler and good air circulation)

be carefull when u walk, because the basement flloor is dark , the guide will tell u creepy story from how the prisoner die until the place they throw dead body.

beside the creepy basement floor, u can visit the first train used at java island, and small museum for dutch train compant at java.

this is the place u must visit at semarang.

“Enough said...”

Well, enough said, the government start to repainting (not restoring) the building last year. It's just a big new building now.

“Sad history”
Reviewed January 28, 2014

Not many westerners travel to Semarang. But if you are in the area, it is worth going. Unlike many other attractions in Indonesia the admission cost is the same for locals as well as tourists. I do recommend getting a guide when paying for your admission and visiting the basement of the building which costs a little extra.

“Not as good as it looks”
Reviewed January 19, 2014

Well, if I watch the building at the television, it seems that this building was big and tall. In fact, Lawang Sewu is actually not that big.
It was beautiful building with interesting architecture. Not that scary when you see it on a day, but oozing different aura when you visit Lawang Sewu on the night.
