Semarang is wellknown for good food with good price, and this is one of them. The loenpia is at its best when you eat it while still hot. So if you visit Semarang, dont forget to try or even bring this back home.

Semarang is known to be the home of Loenpia or Lunpia (spring rolls) in the whole of Indonesia and I can confidently vouch that the best is sold at Lunpia Gang Lombok, a small side shop located at a narrow road leading to the Tay Kak Sie Temple in Chinatown (Pecinan).

The main ingredient in the Lunpia is the young bamboo shoots which together with other stuff like prawns, eggs, some meat & also special spices are cooked to perfection & then rolled into spring rolls using thin crepe-like skins made of flour. At Gang Lombok you can have the wet (fresh) or deep-fried versions and they are sold at IDR10,000 a piece, which I must say is a bit stiff by local standards. But to me it is fair pricing, considering the quality and authenticity. It was so delicious that it was worth every bite. For takeaways above a certain quantity, they even pack the food in special hand-made straw-woven baskets (see photo attached).......interesting indeed!

It's already registered in my mind that the best food we had in Semarang was the Loenpia and it was really a special and superb treat. It is definitely associated with Semarang and we sure look forward very much to try it again.

Loenpia is original and traditional food from Semarang. Contain of "rebung" (bamboo sprouts) mixed with egg, chicken, prawn and spices then wrapped with spring rolls wrapper. Loenpia Gang Lombok serves both the wet and fried ones. The difference between Loenpia Gang Lombok and others is the fullness it contain.

Sold in a small stall beside the Tay Kak Sie temple with the excellent taste. You can get it with IDR 10,000 each. Be patient with the queue.
