Hotel:
The style is an interesting mixture of Indian, Chinese, Art Deco and many others.
Rooms:
They are nice if you don't look too closely at the details ... or if you are there with your love
Food:
The offer in the restaurant called "l'amour fou" sounds nice, unfortunately many dishes are on the menue but not available. If you ask the waiter before ordering if everything is in stock he/she will answer yes and 10 minutes later he/she will return with a frustrating "no".
Cocktails are nice.

I was so looking forward to this stylish, quirky boutique hotel after reading the rave reviews here and in Lonely Planet, which rates this Malang’s best hotel, best restaurants (all three of them), best bar and even the city’s top sightseeing attraction (What the ...? Who got a freebie?).

But I was sadly let down. Maybe the suites are wow-plus but I found the rack-rate rooms (no discounts here, rare for Java) small, dark, overpriced and noisy from street dragsters, the echoing corridor, banging cleaning staff and surging plumbing. The rooms are certainly stylish with nice touches but a couple of Balinese paintings and chunky wooden furniture do not an art masterpiece make, nor make up for a poor night’s sleep.

The owners seem to have put most effort into suites and the function rooms, which showcase their wealth and eclectic art collection, from Chinese antiquities to kitsch paintings, but guests don’t really benefit, while the small pool needs an overhaul and an external paintjob wouldn’t go astray either. Front desk service is 1st class, the restaurant food is good and the tiny garden areas are delightful, but this small hotel ain’t five star. Next time in Malang, I’ll be trying the Graha Cakra.

Flashy and Classic. Art and History. Nice place to stay. Feels very colonial. Fantastic Staff who made us very welcome. They were all helpful and pleasant. The bed was comfi and clean. Really enjoyed my stay there. A little bit disapointed with the restaurant: We were tired and wanted to go to bed but had to wait a long time to be served. I had Sate goat and unfortunately is was 98% blobs of fat. Luckily I was not hungry. The reception was "on the ball" at all times. The hotel also has a resting room for the drivers, where your driver can shower and relax. It was handy for us as our driver was taking us around for five days. We had a really enjoyable stay and would recommend this hotel if you go to Malang.

We were a bit skeptical with the Tugu Hotel since we had read previous reviews that said it was spooky or haunted. But upon entering the Hotel, we found it to be such a calming oasis right in the center of beautiful Malang city. We didn't experience any spooky experience and had a wonderful stay there.

The staff were very helpful and professional, always attending to our questions and needs. They even gave us a private tour around the hotel, including the jaw-dropping Presidential suite. The food was reasonably priced and very tasty. We tried the different local gourmet during Breakfast and it was really tasty. We recommend skipping the American Breakfast option, but rather try the traditional rice plates in the small buffet area.

Afternoon Tea was a highlight, too with various traditional snacks, steamed peanuts and hot beverages served on the second floor terrace. It was such a treat for us and we couldn't wait for it everyday. They had several options of coffee, tea and home-made herbal drinks (called "jamu") available as well.

We tried the traditional message at the Apsara Spa and it was so good. The atmosphere was magical and it was such a relaxing experience for us. My only reservation on the room was that the wall seemed to be thin and we could hear what's going on in the doorway sometimes. But the bed was so comfy that it made up for this and we had uninterrupted sleeps during our stay.

Just be cautious that the hotel does not have any elevators, so if you have issues going up and down via stairs, you may want to request rooms on the ground floor.

We will definitely come back to this hotel and it was truly a home away from home.
