“Best Sunrise with Borobudur Temple in your sight”
Reviewed April 7, 2014

This is a totally new place for me.
You will see the best view of sunrise with Borobudur temple under you.
Bring your camera and your best filter and lens, next thing you get is a breathtaking capture of yours.
There is an entrance fee around IDR 15,000.-

My suggestion is :
- Arrive early (04:30 AM)
- Leave before 06:00 AM and head to Borobudur Temple

“Excellent Sunrise View experience”
Reviewed March 1, 2014

We went up the hill at 4:00am to experience the sunrise. It WAS a great and magnificent experience! Worth waking up so early! We were able to see the foggy sky, then it cleared up for awhile then foggy again. We could see the tip of the Borobudur Temple amidst the fog when the sun was about to rise.. It was a magnificent sight! The hill provided a great view.

“Cheaper alternative to see the Sunrise”
Reviewed December 18, 2013

If you are planning to see the sunrise in Borobudur, it's better you take a trip down
to Punthuk Setumbu to watch the sunrise. You'll get a clearer picture of the sunrise and
borobudur. Borobudur sunrise will cost you about 32USD per person for the entrance and
Punthuk Setumbu is only 5,000 rupiah per entrance.
Make sure you get a driver who knows how to get there. He'll have to pick you up at 4am
otherwise you'll miss the sunrise. Sun comes up around 5am in Dec.
The small hike up the hill in Dec would be muddy and it is wise to bring a LED torchlight and
a raincoat for emergencies.
Experience up there is totally awesome even with your phone camera. Even better with your
DSLR and lens. Awesome view with an inexpensive price!

“A big con”
Reviewed November 15, 2013

We booked a tour and arrived early morning at 5.10 am. What they failed to tell us was that the sun had risen and that it would be pointless to see anything with the dense cloud of mist obstructing the views for miles.

We complained at the ticket counter that they should not charge for tickets to see the nirwana sunrise during the rainy season. There were several disappointed people who all voiced there concerns but those in charge simply laughed.

“Very worthwhile sunrise view”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

My wife & I got to do this in what's probably the best way possible. We were escorted by a guide from our bungalow hotel to ride bicycles through the night to get into position at Punthuk Setumbu just before sunrise. It was a bit risky, as the lights on our bicycles were not the best, & the village roads were extremely dark. We had to agree that if someone was going to stop they needed to announce clearly "Stopping!" We narrowly averted a few pile-ups. But once we figured out how to navigate safely in the dark, it was fine.

Once you get near the hill, you stow your bicycles with a villager & walk up to the top a gentle incline about 100 or 200 meters. No problem.

We had a very scenic morning sunrise with the sun rising over the right shoulder of Mt. Merapi. The guide (& an app on my iPhone) informed us that if you're there during June to July the sun rises perfectly between Mt. Merapi & Mt. Merbabu.

We set up our tripod & go some very worthwhile images on top. We also met some other tourists there & exchanged experiences a bit while taking our images. Our guide once saw Richard Gere & his daughter up here, though he was surrounded by bodyguards who kept everyone else at bay.

On the way back we briefly visited a family who had just had a death the night before in their household--for real (& made a small donation to the funeral). Before returning to our bungalow we stopped for a while at a village ladies' very simple cottage industry making little clay lamps & dishes, then a very picturesque & rustic tofu (tabu) factory, we shot images of duck herders, & then got several worthy images of sellers in the traditional market near the entrance to Borobudur, & picked up a local coffee & breakfast there as well.

Strangely, since then our guide Bapak. Jamal moved to Prambanan, & there's some question about whether anyone else is offering bicycle tours to Punthuk Setumbu. It was an awesome good tour experience--especially for photographers since you could stop your bicycle whenever you wanted & take images without having to convince a driver to pull over. This should be a regularly offered experience at Borobudur.

It was such a great experience that I'm working with a local man to arrange to take photographers on this tour in the near future. DaveRayPhoto.com
