Beautiful secluded resort. Clean and well kept. Amazing vieuws. Great restaurant with very tastful food. Kind and helpful hotel staff. Trips are easy organized with skilled drivers. The best place on Java to stay away from the tourist centers and to experience the real Indonesia. We would have loved to stay longer ....

The plantation grounds are beautiful, and the spa is just lovely. Definitely try the hamam. On the negative and why we give it three stars are: location, selection and the feeling of being cheated. Losari is three hours from Jogyakarta when you take into consideration traffic, and it is still a hefty drive to Borobudor. Car rental with driver were on the expensive side, given that it is Indonesia. The hotel shuttle is ridiculously expensive. There is nothing walking distance, so at times, I felt I was being held captive... Also frustrating is that the menu at the restaurants was pretty limited (if you are staying for more than a couple of days) and pretty expensive since you have no other options available nearby. We were also frustrated that the hotel uses a published exchange rate which when we were there was 30% off the actual exchange rate. This meant our stay at Losari cost 30% more than it should have because we paid with credit card. If they had told us that before, we would have paid in cash. However, we didn't find out until the morning of our departure and the banks were not open (ATMs have a maximum daily withdrawal). It meant that we left on a sour note. Not an experience we would repeat...

Losari, Manager at MesaStila Resort and Spa, responded to this reviewResponded October 4, 2011

Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for your comments; we are open to receive both positive and negative comments, so that we can continue to improve our operation and ensure that we offer excellent value to all our guests.

We appreciate your enthusiastic thoughts on the beautiful surroundings and spa services – we agree that Losari is very special. We are very sorry that you found some matters to be of concern, and have reviewed all the issues raised with our team - at all levels and across all departments.

- Our shuttle service pricing is very competitive with other resorts in the area, with some being more expensive, and others less than we charge. Moreover, if guests choose to take a taxi from the airport, the cost would not be dissimilar. As a differentiator, our shuttle service includes cold towels, refreshments, a careful driver (trained by police driving experts) and will soon include an interactive Ipad-II for use during the journey.

- You are correct that the resort is isolated and this we believe is one of the benefits of Losari and why we are developing to a wellness retreat, with the concept of escape, seclusion and relaxation being key factors in our true retreat from the outside world.

- Our current restaurant menu includes 10-starter choices, 27-main courses and 5-dessert options. While the costs are comparable to other similar level hotels in the region, we are undergoing a review and transformation in our current menu and our Corporate Executive Chef is here this week to help expand our menu offerings.

- We have reviewed all our charging procedures and verified that any payment made with credit card would be no more than 4% more than if paid in cash; this is based on the hotel rate being slightly higher than the bank exchange rate. We would gladly review your bill if you send an e-mail to the resort marked “credit card/cash payment discrepancy” and refund any amount over the 4% difference explained above.

Sincerely – The Losari Management Team

We thought that Losari was quite close to Yogyakarta airport, but didn't know that an 70-km drive would take 2 hours. We can only say that this hotel is absolutely worth the trip. We had a great villa with two connecting rooms. The rooms were huge! It was especially nice to sit on the small veranda and overlook the mountains. The food was great and so was the swimming pool. We enjoyed the trip through the coffee plantation and indulged on the complimentary afternoon tea. We made a trip to the Royal Baths with a guide, which is highly recommended as it is such a nice experience to walk through the rice fields.

It's not terribly easy to reach this place. We flew in to Semerang Airport, which we were told was the closest of the three airports near Losari Coffee Plantation (the other two being Solo and Jogyakarta). Still, it was nearly a three to three and a half hour drive from the airport, which is beyond my limit for car travel.

But getting there is one of those travel inconveniences that makes you appreciate the destination even more. Once you turn into the long driveway, you realize what a special place the resort is. You arrive for check in at small, refurbished, 19th century train depot. From there, you proceed to the lodge, which was the main house of the plantation since its beginning nearly two centuries ago.

Now, the resort is a sprawling complex, encompassing many acres, not counting the parts of the estate still dedicated to coffee plants.

There is a newly opened spa, with a traditional hamam.

Meals here are expensive.

Views from the rooms and in general are breathtaking. There are several volcanoes visible in the distance.

There are many activities on offer. We enjoyed the bike tour around the property and outside, in the nearby village and among stunning rice fields.

Great gift shop, including lots of types of coffee - from the beans themselves, to ground, to powdered; and home-made brown sugar; among other, more typical resort gifts, like T shirts and jewelry.

We would return for a visit, when we have several more days to spend. You need a good four days here at least to fully appreciate being here, especially given how challenging it can be to get here.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for your kind and supportive comments; we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Losari.

As you may have read in our resort welcome letter, we are changing our concept to a retreat to take advantage of the spectacular environment and relaxing spaces. Indeed, our programs from November 1st 2011 will be all inclusive/ more inclusive - and offer an even wider range of programs than we currently have. With this new retreat concept, we will be including all meals, which will mean that guests no longer have the expenses of additional meals as they will be included as a part of the as part stay.

We note that your journey was inordinately long. While this may happen from time-to-time, the journey from any of the nearby airports is not usually more than 1.5 to 2 hours. Unfortunately during the August period you were here, the roads were heavily congested due to the increases of traffic during the month of Ramadan. As we move forward, to make the journey more tolerable, we will be offering interactive programs with all cars being equipped with the latest Ipad-II, which will also offer music options and access to the Internet during the journey.

Wishing you all the best for your future travel and adventures!

We were on a road trip and went to the resort for an evening coffee.
The manager Bryan met us in the restaurant and offered us a good deal that made us pitch in here for the night.
Overall stay was very comfortable, very well designed suites that offered a great view and plenty of space.
The Turkish Hamam bath was a great experience.
We took the coffee plantation tour in the morning, a nice relaxing walk around the plantation.
Only challenge would be to reach this resort from the nearest airport.
Highly recommended if you want a quiet, relaxing holiday - away from the hustle and noise of cities.

Out of the hussle of the big cities, this place is so pacefull and quiet, that you will forget all the stress in five minutes. I stayed in Arum Villa and it was an amazing experience! The bath is to die for and the whole Villa is beatifully decorated and kept. I will recommend the Yoga classes in the morning, walking around the plantation and the Spa! Lovely! I will most certainly return one day!

We stayed 6 days: the place is beautiful set in the coffee plantation: rooms are in old Indonesian houses (fully renovated and up to date). The room was extermely well fitted and functiuonal and free wi-fi. Hotel just reopened after renovations with full opening November 2011

Set inthe hills with great views of the forest around and nearby volcanoes. Great spa as they are starting full wellness and relaxation programmes. But there are plenty of other things to do, visiting some of Indonesia's most famous sites - also hiking through rice paddies, hill walking and riding.

Food was excellent and service good. They can also arrange cooking classes.

A very laid back place, wonderful for relaxation, which is its greatest asset. You can do asd much or as little as you wish.

Just one note: alcohol is very expensive everywhere in Indonesia due to Government duties.

Room Tip: Rooms wih views of the volcanoes.

Losari, Manager at MesaStila Resort and Spa, responded to this reviewResponded August 16, 2011

Dear Mr. Michael – many thanks for your wonderful comments! We have passed on your thoughts about the service to our staff, who very much enjoy the positive comments that our guests offer… We’d like to expand on two points in your review:

1. We have completed a 4 month renovation, where the hotel was closed to upgrade and update all our rooms and public areas. We opened fully in May 2011 and have been operating normally ever since. Nevertheless, we are currently undergoing a transition from resort to retreat… This property will be rebranded as a fully integrated wellness retreat from November 1st 2011. As a Wellness Retreat we will offer specially packaged retreats with definitive wellness themes and specialized programs; developments include: new and additional spa treatments, fitness activities, healthy cuisine menus, cultural and educational programs, retreat guidelines that stimulate an immediate personal change and packages that include a variety of wellness services. Losari offers a distinct Javanese flavor – with Pencak Silat; Java-coffee scrubs; local Javanese food with a healthy twist; an immersion to the healthy-healing garden of Losari and the service of skilled local practitioners who offer traditional healing services: from Jamu to Javanese massage.

2. Alcohol in Indonesia is taxed at a very high rate and we aim to keep prices down to a level that will allow guests to enjoy their favorite tipple. In fact we have just received a delivery of over 700-bottles of excellent wines and will be sharing these with guests at a vastly reduced rate than you will find in many other areas of Indonesia…

We look forward to your return!
