Despite its reputation as a very popular weekend getaway destination for many Jakarta residents, Bogor had always lagged behind when it comes to availability of quality lodgings. It is therefore quite refreshing to see a number of big players started setting their feet here, including Aston, whose hotel, the Aston Bogor, is consistently ranked as the no. 1 hotel in Bogor. We went there for a weekend getaway earlier this month.
The hotel is located in a real estate compound, a bit away, but easily accessible from the city centre (although you should take into consideration Bogor’s notorious weekend traffic!) The compound itself is decidedly upscale, but do expect to see a throng of local villagers hanging out in public areas just off the hotel with their noisy bikes! Just a stone’s throw away from the hotel are a waterpark (didn’t visit it but we were offered 50% off the entrance fee), two convenience stores (including a Lawson that sells surprisingly good Japanese light meals!), and a food court, which looked gloomy but offers a cheap and cheerful alternative to the hotel’s outlets.
We booked a Condotel Two Bedroom, which comprised of two bedrooms and a living/dining room with a pantry, pretty good for the four of us, except that there was only one bathroom (with no tub) for both bedrooms. The design was on the simple side, pretty much devoid of any character. We also noticed a number of scratches and peels on the furniture, which I guess said a lot about its quality and level of maintenance. Very sad, given the fact that this hotel opened just recently. The room also lacked a number of amenities (there were two bathrobes, three cups, three toothbrushes, odd numbers!) and it took forever to get them fixed.
Our room overlooked a non-descript view towards the neighbourhood, despite us having requested for mountain views. Should we return, we definitely would opt for the pool view which seemed to be more resort-like. On the plus side, the condotel had large windows and a spacious long balcony, where I enjoyed the rain over a cuppa. The service was also very friendly, if slow, you could even hear their smiles on the phone (except the gym attendant who did not even bother to smile or say anything when I was his only guest!)
We did not have lunch or dinner on site, only breakfast, which was a very messy affair! The buffet selection itself was pretty good with a balanced combination of Indonesian and international options, but the food quality was not up to par and the service was appaling – not rude, but painstakingly slow we ended up serving ourselves.
I honestly feel that Aston Bogor fell short of my expectations in many respects, but the fact that this is the preferred hotel for many in Bogor tells you a lot about the hospitality industry here – yes, people are very friendly, yes they smile at you, but they may not always know what they are doing.
PS: They blocked a deposit of the room rate + extras prior to arrival, although we booked a flexible rate, without informing us in advance!
