“Wonderful place to stay - hard to leave!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2014

We stayed at Sama's in March 2014 for 3 days and loved the place. Lovely cottages in lush gardens. The cottages were large, well maintained and very clean. Coffee and breakfast was brought to our cottage every morning and hot water for tea in afternoon. The pool was good sized and very nice with high quality massage service on request. The Balinese staff were amazing - so polite and helpful. Location was great - on a quiet street, good restaurants nearby and easy walk to Monkey forest, galleries, downtown Ubud or rice paddies. We would stay here again - but for longer next time. Of course you will need to get used to roosters wake up call in Ubud as every household has a least one.

Hi Karen, Thanks so very much for your fantastic review, we appreciate it and feel honoured you enjoyed the Sama's experience. Yes, what is Bali without the morning chorus from the roosters, it is a tradition here I guess lol? We are so pleased you had such a pleasurable time with us and do hope that we see you again in the future. All the very best to you.

We spent a week in Ubud in the bungalow that is managed by Sama's - it is at the back of the property and looks out onto the jungle. It was a totally authentic Bali experience.

This bungalow has 2 bedrooms and 2 baths - we only needed one but no matter. It comes with its own private pool, outdoor dining area and outdoor living area. The beds have nets, which are necessary because there are no screens or glass. We woke every morning to the sounds of the jungle, totally unmuffled by artificial barriers. First one rooster, then another, then the jungle starts waking up - there are those few moments right at dawn when the jungle just springs to life with a cacophony of sounds - it is a magical experience!

Every afternoon, we ordered our breakfast for the next morning - their banana pancakes are awesome! Yummy fruit artfully presented, and fresh flowers in the bowl every morning. We also were treated daily with lovely fresh flowers and fragrant plumeria blooms in our bathroom and on the bed.

They offer massage - of course I said yes - which is done onsite in the outdoor living area - so convenient! At their suggestion, we did a bike ride through the countryside and rice fields. I'm not much for organized tours. Our host said she was not either, but that this is one she would recommend. We were so glad we did it. We saw the real Bali and met some very interesting people in the process.

The proprietors Kath and Wayan took great care of us. If - hopefully when - we go back to Ubud, this is where we want to stay.

Hi Deb, Thankyou for your inspiring comments about Villa Teras Sungai, we so appreciate it. Whilst it is a villa that Sama's manages we are blessed to offer this gorgeous villa to larger groups of people and it never ceases to amaze us with the positive experiences had by all. Deb you truly embraced Ubud and it is a credit to you as not everyone likes to wake to the sounds from the jungle or gets as much from their stay as you did. If you don't mind, could you please place this review also on the Flipkey site for Villa Teras Sungai, much appreciated. Thanks Deb and all the very best for the future and see you again one day I am sure.

Pros: Separate cottages with private bath and good air conditioning in a very quaint cottage with Indonesian touches. Good service and helpful staff. Very reasonable price. Good location, walking distance from Ubud palace and all shops and restaurants.

Cons: The lighting is horrible. Exposed, harsh, super cool white CFLs placed badly around the cottage. Don't expect to be able to see yourself in the mirror. Really counters the peaceful vibe. Coffee is not good, but there's a great cofeeshop owned by the same owner a block down.

Dear Shannon, Firstly please let me say thankyou for writing your review, it is truly appreciated. We do take pride in our rooms but do understand your criticisms. The coffee we serve in the rooms is a local variety for the traditional Balinese experience but as you stated we also have our cafe, Kopi on Bisma that caters for the western palette with top range coffee. So once again thankyou for your invaluable insights and review.

Great location - quieter street off the main drag but still lots of restaurant / spa choices nearby. Stayed in standard fan & standard air con - equally nice. We really didn't need air con but no openable windows in those units. Great breakfast served on our porch. Coffee & tea too in the afternoon as well. Staff friendly & helpful. Pool was cool & lovely. Water in recyclable glass bottles. Fridge & minibar handy. Safe in room. We preferred cottages closer to reception - fewer steps. Yes you'll hear roosters but they're everywhere & we enjoyed the chorus.

Dear Alaskamojo, We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Sama's, thanks for your wonderful comments. We loved the fact that your time spent with us was so pleasurable and thankyou for giving such a detailed description of our facilities and services. It really assists others when they have questions about certain aspects and when it comes from another guest, it is very creditable. So many places give inaccurate information about what they offer and it's refreshing to know what we do makes a difference and it is all true. Thanks again and hope to see you in the future.

We stayed with another couple in two of Sama's Cottages. We were there for 8 nights. Ubud is a very busy, noisy town, and though Sama's Cottages is right in the heart of it, you would not guess. It is peaceful, beautifully maintained, and private. Each cottage has lovely foliage surrounding it. There is a friendly, efficient staff, absolutely wonderful breakfasts, and a refreshing pool. If you walk the opposite direction from the main street of town on Bisma, you will find the road leads to several good restaurants and serene rice fields. Down the street toward town is a school, more restaurants, and a quick trip to all the action in the heart of the city. The rooms at Sama's are spotless, with fairly comfortable beds, very nice, compact bathrooms (good shower!), and a lovely veranda with chairs and a table. ano AC in our rooms, but two fans were more than adequate, even in the severe heat and humidity. This is where breakfast is brought to you. Everyone there was so accommodating and pleasant! All this for about $45US per night! We HIGHLY recommend Sama's Cottages!

Room Tip: If you are farther from the office down the path, there are steep steps to get to the cottages so th...

During our two month trip around Indonesia (mid-October to mid-December 2013) we stayed at Sama's Cottages twice, and the obvious reason that we did that was because we loved it there. On checking out after our second time I was genuinely upset to be leaving. The property sits on a mature jungle like garden. At the back end of the property there is a thickly clad valley resonant with bird, rooster and insect sounds, the trees here are quite big so this is the shadiest part of Sama's. Sometimes this means it can be a little dark, sometimes it can mean its the coolest part of the property. We preferred the cottages nearer the reception, which was still pretty jungle like anyway. Sitting on the veranda in the morning having breakfast, brought to you by the excellent staff, was almost like being on safari, butterflies, cicadas, lizards, flowers in the trees, one time near the reception a monitor lizard burst out of some bush and ran off down the path. The cleanliness of the cottages was perfect - in Indonesia this is often a problem but at Sama's its not. Bathrooms lovely, all decked out with frangipani, a real pleasure. Did I mention the pool? You could easily spend all day at the pool, I know because we did. It's small but the location is lovely. And last but not least, the owners (who are very hands on) and the staff ... I just can't say enough good things about them. They were fantastic and even though the garden, pool, cottages, breakfast, etc were great, its them that made the place special. In the 2 months we were in Indonesia we stayed in 13 different properties, of those 13 Sama's Cottages and Windy Beach Resort (Mangsit, Lombok) were the one's we enjoyed most.

Room Tip: Room nearer the reception get more light, also you don't need aircon here as the ceiling fans ar...

Mikeballeco, what a beautiful review. Thankyou so much. We too enjoyed meeting you and were sad to say goodbye after your second visit. We are just so touched to know that all we strive to do as a team and offer our guests was truly appreciated by you. It is indeed our fantastic staff who make Sama's what it is. They genuinely enjoy their work and want to make sure all guests enjoy their stay with us. It is them who, as you put it, are what make Sama's so unique and so special. Attention to detail, including cleanliness in the rooms and bathrooms, is important to us, and my wife and I regularly check all rooms to make sure high standards are maintained. We are so happy that everyone's hard work does not go unnoticed. I have passed on your special review to all our staff and they are thrilled to be able to read such praise. We hope you will be able to make it back to Sama's for a third visit one day soon!

These were nice bungalows set along a garden just a short walk from the main street. The rooms were clean and roomy. The pool was wonderful with nice loungers. The staff were helpful and friendly. The only issue we had here was a broken door handle, which made our room pretty insecure.

Dear valued guest, I thankyou so much for taking the time to write us a review, it is really appreciated. I also thankyou for alerting me to the problem with the door handle which has been fixed now. I am not sure why you would say that it left the room unsafe though when all of our doors are locked from the inside using a wooden stick that lies tightly across the entire door, not a conventional lock.......this method of bolting the door closed is old Bali style but is still very safe and much safer than a conventional lock. I wish you all the very best and thankyou so much for staying with us at Sama's Cottages.
