“Charming cottage”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2013

We stayed 6 nights over Christmas and loved it, staff always had a smile on their faces and were eager to please. Very clean and breakfast served on the veranda was tasty as all Balinese food is. We booked a superior room with fan but took the mosquito net off to get the benefit of the fan, closing the windows at night we had no problems with mosquito's I even put a light rug over my legs in the early hours of the morning. Just opposite Sama C look out for taxi driver, I Made Wardana the 3 tours we did with him were so much fun. Recommend visiting the Elephant Safari Park but get there early if you are going to ride the elephants also dont miss Kecak Fire and Trance Dance held at one of the Temples info is available at Sama. Thankyou so much to all staff we loved every minute staying with you and hope to return some day, cheers from room 2

To any one thinking of staying at Sama's cottages- DO IT! The owners are so gorgeous, generous of spirit and kind and their staff never stop smiling or helping.

The pool is wonderful and inviting with plenty of lounges and towels ready for all. Then there's the wonderful Mr Gusti (a reflexologist and massuer) or other male and female balinese masseurs available to provide their services (when booked) beside the pool or in your rooms.

The setting throughout is so tranquil and lush and the rooms are clean, simple and truly lovely with big 4 poster, canopied beds, comfortable chairs and beautiful offerings of fresh flowers left around them every day.

There is soooooooooo much to see, do and experience and the locals in this area are all so welcoming and friendly you will want to return (like I plan to) again and again and again!

Make sure you eat at the Kopi on Bisma too which is just outside the entrance and linked with the hotel if you feel like some old favs like coon cheese on a toasted sandwhich which they import from back in Aus. or the amazing greek salads which have a secret special and deliscious dressing!!!!

If you prefer a more international meal there are many great restaurants to choose from nearby and lots of fabulous shopping from markets (for those who enjoy a bargain) to your higher end stores!

If you have even half the amzing experiences I have had whilst there, you will be rapt! Best holiday ever and I have travelled far and wide!

Happy travelling and enjoy Sama's Cottages, Ubud and the wonderful, generous people you'll meet there!

Room Tip: You simply need to decide whether you need an air con. room or are happy with the many fans they can...

We stayed at Sama's for five nights and were quite happy with the location, facilities, and staff. The staff in particular were lovely- always friendly and really helpful. We booked a superior fan-cooled room, which was nice, however the ceiling fan was so rubbish and mosquito net so thick it didn't cool the room at all! We requested a pedestal fan from reception and this did help. The bathroom was beautiful and breakfast on the balcony each morning was rad. Location wise, it was a short walk to the main streets of Ubud and far enough away to avoid the noisy traffic. I would recommend you stock up on water (and Bigbang) at one of the nearby shops as Sama's were quite expensive for this. I had a Bali massage by the pool for a ridiculously cheap $10AUD, I highly highly highly recommend you get one... Or two... Overall a nice place to stay, we did wonder about the value for money here but definitely can't complain.

Hi Steph, thankyou so much for such a detailed and positive review, it makes all our hard work and effort worth it. The massages by Pak Gusti and his team are indeed fantastic, and I will pass on your praise to him. Regarding bottled water at Sama's, I refuse to sell plastic aqua bottles and I encourage all our guests to buy the glass bottles, either from us or elsewhere, as the bottles are recycled and there is little waste created. We try and keep the price of glass Aqua bottles as cheap as possible, but unfortunately they are more expensive than the plastic bottles.
Once again, thankyou so much for staying with us at Sama's, it was a pleasure to have you!

Sama's Cottages were ideal for us. Clean, comfortable room set in lovely gardens with a great pool. They are ten minutes walk from the main market and restaurant area and, as is Ubud, only a couple of minutes from the nearest rice paddies. Our room had no insect screens but was airconed and very comfy. I think aircon would be necessary always. They say Ubud is "in the mountains" but, at a little over 200 meters high, it really isn't. The girls did a cooking course at Bumbu Bali which was terrific. I loved the walks (used the Lonely Planet guide); it was hot and Sama's was a great, cool spot to go "home" to.

Jalan Bisma, the road that Samas Cottages is located along is nice and quiet and very close to Ubud, and Samas is set quite a way back from the road so it's very peaceful apart from animal noises such as roosters, chickens and insects, none of which bother me.
The rooms are clean however we had an insect issue one night (they had fumigated that day so perhaps a nest was disturbed or something) and the owner came down and rectified the situation and moved us to another room - unfortunately they didn't have an AC twin room so had to be moved to a non twin non AC room - to be honest we weren't too hot in the fan room. We had to move back to the other room for our late checkout but they insects were gone which was good. Despite being moved around, the staff did their best with the situation so it didn't bother me. The style of the buildings in Bali being quite open to the outside, I can imagine it would be difficult to keep them 100% free of insects, especially around areas with lots of trees.
The breakfast here is very generous - I tried a pancake and an omelette and both were yummy, and the fruit plate is huge (seems better value to choose the fruit plate over the juice)!
We bumped into the owner at a cafe a few doors up called Kopi on Bisma and it turns out he has only just opened it. The espresso coffee is good - not best Sydney standard but better than anything else I'd tried in Bali and better than many cafes in Sydney!
The pool area was lovely and relaxing - comfy loungers, cool pool, a beautiful garden full of flowers and a cute ginger kitten running around. There is also wifi across the whole property - in room and by the pool.
We also had a massage here and my friend and I both agreed that the massage therapists were amazing!! Very firm pressure and they clearly knew what they were doing. I would definitely recommend a massage here but maybe not by the pool as it's not very private and hard to get undressed/redressed without flashing everyone. Have it in-room instead.
All of the staff here were so super friendly, it felt like being welcomed into a home. I would definitely come back. The value is fantastic.

Dear Emily, it was so wonderful to have you stay with us here at Sama's Cottages, we just love to have Aussies stay! Once again we apologise for the ants....and thankyou sincerely for your understanding. Like you said, we are indeed pretty much in a forest and every now again we have a struggle with some of the wildlife! I will pass on your fantastic comments to all our staff, including the masseurs. Indeed we are trying to create a home away from home, so we are so pleased that is what you experienced. All the very best to you and our warmest Christmas wishes from Sama's.

We booked voor two nights, but we end up staying four nights. The staff is very very friendly, de pool is great en de room's/cottages are adorable. Because of de beautiful garden around the cottages, is there a lot of privacy en a nice view from the porch.
The rooms are very clean and you get everything you need. In the rainy season it will not be very hot, so a room with only a fan will do. The rooms with AC, are fine as well. (we booked a room with AC, but we hardly used it).
Within 5 minutes walking, you get to the centre of Ubud, with lots of good restaurants en shops.
We definitely reccommend a stay in Sama's cottages!

Good to mention is that they opened up a coffee-restaurant next door! You'll drink a coffee you'll never forget! They use the finest coffee-beans and the coffee is being served hot, like a good coffee should be. You can't leave Ubud without trying a cup of coffee there!

Stayed in Samas cottage for 1 night in Nov 12, and don't quite experience the good reviews. We had a fan-cooled room which doesn't provide much air to the room and too hot to sleep at night. Breakfast was not served on time because there was only one guy serving food to each of the cottages guests. The room is very basic and a little dirty. There were stains on beds and i had some bedbugs bite when we got back (quite sure it's from SC cos we switch to another hotel and my friend who did not share the bed with me didn't get the bites)

Staff are great however, friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Get the air conditioned room

Dear Valued Guest, thankyou so much for taking the time to write a review, and we are so upset to hear that you did not enjoy your stay at all with us. It is not an excuse, but unfortunately the time you stayed with us we had a death in the family, and as we are a family business, it meant that we were very short staffed for about 5 days. There was just nothing that we could do about this as we had to all take part in the arrangements for the funeral and the funeral itself. I have spoken to the boys re the cleanliness of the rooms, but I am puzzled at the idea of bedbugs when we change our sheets daily, wash the mattress protectors at the end of each guest stay and turn and air the mattresses regularly. We are proud of our high standard of cleanliness and constantly strive to maintain this. It would have been nice to have you come and talk to us directly instead of just going straight to Trip Advisor!
