“Absolutely the Best!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2010

I have just returned from a one-month stay at Tanah Merah, and when I came to post my review, I noted...with total disbelief...the review from org_was from Perth. I have traveled throughout the world and stayed at many of the most highly rated resorts and hotels, and I can state without qualification that Tanah Merah is my absolute favorite. The accommodations are immaculate and cleaned at least 2 times...and often 3 times...each day. The setting is spectacular...high above a deep river gorge in an amazingly peaceful and tranquil setting. The staff is the nicest, friendliest, most courteous and most helpful staff I have EVER experienced. They will literally do anything they can to make you feel welcome and to meet any reasonable need. The food in the restaurant is fresh, healthy and on a par with any of the best restaurants in LA, NY, etc. And while Tanah Merah is situated about 10 minutes from the center of Ubud, the drive to and from town is through some of the most scenic landscape of Bali, with views of terraced rice fields, mountains and the volcano.

The comments about the Wi-Fi, mosquitoes, noisy area and the dogs actually make me chuckle. As I mentioned, I was there for 30 days, and with the exception of a short (approx 20 hour) period, I had absolutely no difficulty connecting to the Wi-Fi. During that entire period, I got maybe 3 mosquito bites, much fewer than I get when I go to the Hamptons in the summer. The “noise” is actually the sound of the river running below, and the sounds of the jungle at night. Personally, I pay extra for these. And the giant lizards are in fact geckos. Don’t come here if you don’t like the outdoors.

And speaking of the river, the world that awaits at the bottom of the steps down to the river is AMAZING. And the staff at Tanah Merah is happy to accompany you down and then take you for a swim up river to an AMAZING waterfall, which is often surrounded by the local monkeys. Again, don’t come here if you don’t appreciate being in a natural and unspoiled setting.

I actually got to know the dogs well over my 30 day stay, and saw them bathed at least 2 or 3 times a week.

Bottom line: this place is fabulous. And not just for me. Over the course of the 30 days I was there, I met MANY very interesting people from around the world...from Australia, the Netherlands, Denmark, the US, and to a person, when they learned that I was staying a month, they ALL told me that they wished they were staying longer.

I have come to believe that Bali is one of the most special places on Earth, but that it only appeals to those with an open heart and an open mind. And for those with an open heart and an open mind, Tanah Merah is THE BEST!

Not a recommended hotel. Terrible. Bad service. Liars. Dirty room. Two big smelly dogs are always in the restaurant area and annoyed people who were eating. Noisy area. Hard to get to this hotel from the airport. Terrible location - far from shops. they say they have WI FI, But the fact they don't have. Liars!! Rip off. Owner only cares about what he likes but doesn't care about the concerns from the client. Insects everywhere, especially in the room. Giant spiders, mosquitoes, giant lizards, etc. And the owner doesn't want to do anything about it, because he said insects are everything for him!

We stayed at Tanah Merah for four days and absolutely loved it. The room was huge with 5 m to the ceiling. The bathroom had a bronze bathtub and a separate shower. The room is filled with beautiful pieces of art from Bali, Papua New Guinea and East Timor. That also goes for the entire resort where you feel like you stepped into another time but with all of our modern comforts. There is also a gallery where Peter (the owner) has a great collection of arts. The staff will gladly show you around and are really well informed about the stories behind every piece.
There a two different restaurants, one where you can have breakfast seeing the mist rize from the forrest that surrounds the resort. The other restaurant is near the pool and they serve excellent food.
There are two different pools aswell, one of them is right out to the egde of a cliff and it is fantastic to go there for a swim. Because of it's location the weather at Tanah Merah is a bit cooler than in Ubud itself, wich is really nice as it can easily get too hot in Bali.
The thing we liked the best was the welcoming staff that is always ready to help you with anything, the food and the service was fantastic and the setting is undescribable and should be seen with own eyes. Furthermore it is a great place to get away from the hustle and the bustle that is Ubud but still being able to drive there in 5 min.

Overall an experience we will never forget.

after driving around bali we reached Tanah Merah, it was like coming to a different world.
the studio room that we had was fantastic, not like anyother hotel room i have ever been in, it was huge and more like being someones guest in a fantastic home than being in a hotel, the bathtub was handshaped brass and the room was beautifully decorated.
the four days we stayed we hardly left the grounds, laying the pool all day enjoying the view and astounding feeling of being in a jungle paradise.
the food was fantastic and so was the staff.
i can highly recomend this place, even more when you have traveled around for a while you will really appreciate the calm sorrundings this place has to offer.

If you would like to be absolutely spoiled, discover spectacular nature, lovely foods and an almost undiscovered Bali – Tanah Merah is the place to go!

Here you will discover the true world of relaxation: The rooms are beautifully decorated, the staff is first class and the food is simply fantastic. This magnificently resort offers you a pure luxury vacation with a variety of pools, spas and massages - and surroundings that will take your breath away.

In this gorgeous place you will meet wild monkeys and ice blue birds while spending a soothing time at the bank of the river - or simply just when looking out of your window.

Tanah Merah is located in the nice and quiet village Malayang, Pejeng, and is to us the true Bali. The friendly staff that lives in the village and in the surroundings is always kind and smiling – and laughs easily.

To put in short: we will never get enough of Tanah Merah and will return for the 3rd time – once Tanah Merah – always Tanah Merah!

We are a danish couple, who just had spend a week on the indonesian island Sumba, where the touristic facilities are absolute ’basic’. When we arrived in Tanah Merah it was like landing in an entirely different world. From the very first moment we felt welcome and comfortable in this fine resort, that consist of several tasteful furnished, local style guest houses situated on a steep hillside with a beautiful luxuriant vegetation. Futhermore there are several swimming-pools and two restaurants, that serves delicious meals at fair prices. But best of all, the people in the staff are all very kind, obliging and helpful. The gallery contains an impressive collection of paintings and other objects of art from the area. The resort has a car with driver and possible guide at one’s disposal for shorter or longer tours on Bali. We enjoyed our stay at Tanah Merah very much. Our only objection is, that you risk to become badly addicted to this place.
