“What a find!!”
Reviewed August 29, 2014

After booking another Ubud hotel for 5 nights, we were informed upon arrival that they had overbooked and that we had now been booked into Tanna Mehra for 2 of the 5 nights. We wish it had been the FIVE nights! The place is 4-5 kms out of central Ubud but it is worth the distance. It is like a residential museum. Every corner has unique pieces of Balinese history placed in them. We had a lovely lunch in one restaurant, a full a la carte breakfast in another, infinity pool, free shuttle into town, what more can anyone want?

As for the enormous studio room (no 6) we had, it was equipped with vaulted ceilings, a huge copper bath and marble shower, 2 huge king sized four poster beds, paintings and antiquities in every corner and a television as well!!! On top of this, there is a museum with pieces collected by the owner over 46 years. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel as a unique experience!

Stayed here last month. This is a complex of several individual villas- all different from each other in decor and size. As well, there is one small 6-plex of studio rooms - new, large and nicely appointed. The property is lovely, sitting on a river gorge - lush, with great views. Two great pools, lots of lounge area. Lovely dining room; different great breakfast area. Excellent large, fresh breakfasts. Staff are helpful and friendly.
The owner, Peter, is a very interesting man - willing to please his guests; clearly dedicated to his staff and the local village community.. He has an amazing art gallery as well as "The Collection", which he encourages you to visit.

We enjoyed our stay...however, a few tips: be very careful as you view the website to note the different rooms...and be quite specific about what you want. We stayed in a villa for the first 4 nights (probably the oldest one on the property) and while it was large, it's décor was tired, and the bathroom in desperate need of renovation. On our last night, Peter moved us to a brand new room...very nice.
The complex is about 10 minutes from the middle of Ubud. We liked this - nice to be in the lush riverbank - complementary shuttle to town whenever you need it. Only $5 cab ride back to home base.
A few more tips - the property is settled in between two local small family farms. Very early morning rooster wake-up on one side; the studio complex backs directly onto pig farm which can have strong odour. Also, staff are helpful to book tours...but note that the same tours can be booked right along the main street in Ubud for half the price.

Room Tip: rooms are all different, so check website for photos and be very specific about your selection when...

Wow! Our stay at this resort has been absolutely unbelievable. After much research and deliberation I chose this resort for our honeymoon in Bali and am I ever glad I made the wisest choice!!

This resort is beyond words. The rooms are 10+++ with incredible art and antiques throughout, large beds and Incredible views. The owner is a very interesting man who's attention to detail and passion for the Balinese people is truly inspiring. Ensure you visit his incredible museum- it was quite the treat. It also must be mentioned that the staff were extremely friendly and genuinely happy- we felt lucky to get to know them.

Our rooms were truly astonishing. We stayed in Villa 1 for three nights and then the Mads Lange Villa for two nights. Both were incredible. I highly suggest spending the extra money on the Mads Lange with private pool. It is the nicest place we have ever been and I regret that we have to leave!

As I write this review, I'm overlooking gorgeous jungle, enjoying a tea and watching monkeys play in the trees across the gorge.

Surely this is heaven on earth.

I loved the Tanah Merah Resort. It was such a beautiful resort with gorgeous bedrooms and natural surroundings. The resort is located in a mountainous area and is very scenic. There are several swimming pools with pretty garden surroundings. I stayed here for 2 nights in early August 2014 and wished that I could have stayed longer.

The room is actually prettier than presented in the photos on the website. Each room has beautiful wood furniture with nice Balinese paintings and beautiful lighting. The rooms are gorgeous, spacious, clean and comfortable. My room had a modern flat screen TV with cable channels. The size of the TV was just fine. I was able to view it well from the seating area with lounge chairs that are located near the TV (it is like a small living room area). The air conditioner, hot shower and free Wi Fi all worked well.

The staff was very professional, polite, warm, welcoming and helpful. The staff provided excellent service. I had breakfast and dinner at the hotel and they were both good.
I enjoyed the location of the resort because it was about 15 minutes outside of Ubud in a pretty and quiet area. The hotel provides free shuttle services into town. You have to take an inexpensive and readily available taxi from Ubud back to the hotel.
I highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again.

Stayed here for 2 nights with some friends and their children. The place is located a bit outside of Ubud but it was easy to get a taxi and only about 10 minutes drive to get to the center of Ubud. The rooms are very spacious and nicely decorated and the staff was very friendly and helpfull organizing our rafting tour. We ate in the restaurant both nights and the food was good. The price wasn't cheap for Bali but I think it was worth it. We had a nice stay here!

This hotel is certainly unique. The owner, a man who originally comes from Denmark and whom the locals know as 'jungle dentist' due to his efforts in improving dental care for everyone in Bali, is also an art collector. Beneath the parking lot lies an amazing art collection with porcelain from the Chinese Song and Yuan dynasties, gold from the Majapahit kingdom, a 400 years old dislocated Javan house, ancient statues from Papua, and of course magnificent carvings from Bali itself. This invaluable collection was mostly unearthed from shipwrecks.

As for the hotel, it is located beautifully on a hillcrest 15 minutes from Ubud city center (by car). One sees the jungle on the opposite side of the valley. There is a highly recommendable steep walkway down to the river where you can appreciate the scenery and take a bath.

Some things weren't quite right for me, though. First, you can't do anything without having to catch a ride first -- next time I'd probably stay in the town center instead, though the hotel does offer free shuttle rides to town and inexpensive motorcycle rental.
Second, food is very overpriced for local standards. Better eat for half the price (or less) in town or the excellent nearby Padi Organic which offers free pick-ups.
Third, WiFi was either not working or painstakingly slow.
Fourth, though our room featured expensive furniture and paintings, we didn't really feel at home.
