This absolutely fantastic resort will give you the opportunity to be in touch with nature as well as experiencing best in class service. Staff and facilities are excellent and the surroundings absolutely breathtaking.. We were upgraded to the villa with private swimming pool, balcony overlooking the river and the valley. 2 minor downsides: Chickens waking us up at 4 am (suggest to ask for an accomodation away from the farm of just carry ear plugs) and the cousine in the main restaurant which was not as great as the rest of the services (suggest to go into town to experience excellent food for less)..Highly recommended and we will come back!!

What an amazing resort!! We stayed in one of the studio rooms. Large, modern. This is a small resort, and very much a family feel. The staff is very friendly, and will interact with you. My wife and I took a cooking class in Ubud, and the staff offered to show us how they cook in the hotel restaurant!

This is the tropics, so yes there are bugs in Bali, Ubud, and on the property. The staff lights anti mosquito candels every night, which is comon in the area.

Hotel, is a 5 minute walk from rice patties, and make sure to swim in the river!!! They will not let you go alone, for good reason. The staff is from the local village, and many swim in the river daily so are aware of the currents etc.

You will not be disappointed if you book this hotel!!

We loved Tanah Merah resort, and Peter is a gracious host. If you get the chance, ask Peter to show you his new museum - we were pleasantly surprised by his amazing collection. Wow!

The hotel rooms are gorgeous - there is attention to detail in the decorating. The pool is amazing. The water is silky and smooth (apparently it is from a ground bore). The food is ok, and breakfast is sufficient to get you started for the day.

The staff helped us book an afternoon car to take us around Kuta and Seminyak (USD60), and a cycling trek with Bali Bike-Baik Tours (very interesting - www.balibike.com). Everyone was helpful and accommodating. Thanks to them for a relaxing, uncomplicated trip.

Studio rooms have the chickens close by, so if you are a light sleeper, ask for a villa.

The resort is peaceful with amazing views. Ask the staff to book a massage - very good. Overall, this was the highlight of our Bali visit.

Room Tip: Studios are noisier, villas are quiet.

This place was good value, small enough not to be a tourist farm and about a ten minute drive outside of the centre which suited us just fine once we’d seen the bustle and noise of the central area. There are a number of much more expensive, up-market places on offer in the area but Tanah Merah had a good feel to it from the other reviews etc., which paid off handsomely for us once we arrived.

The studio / apartment rooms are enormous with high ceilings, a selection of art and fine furniture adorning the walls and beautifully appointed bathrooms complete with full copper basin, bathtub and other fittings. The Mads Lange villa is more impressive still, boasting commanding views over the gorge from a private infinity pool and courtyard (with views from the bathrooms over the rainforest).

The staff and owner were extremely helpful, friendly and willing to go out of their way to be of assistance whenever needed (even the dogs were friendly and unobtrusive despite the whinging of some mentally defective reviewer below complaining about the behavior of the dogs).

Despite the reasonable distance from the centre, a free shuttle is offered into town from the hotel more or less on request with an hour’s notice. A taxi is required back and this can be haggled for from town for anywhere between 30,000 and 50,000 rupiah (about US$3-US$5). Dining for lunch and dinner in Ubud is pretty straightforward using this system if you don’t want to eat at the restaurant on-site. The restaurant food selection is good and prices are understandably at a small convenience premium to Ubud prices.

The setting is on the spectacular Ayung Gorge and the sound of the river valley and nearby waterfall form a constant backdrop. If you stay in the old part of the resort (apartments and cabins up by the main pool) you’ll hear a bit from the local chickens in the farm next door so be aware of that. When we stayed (around New Years) in one of the apartments (which is closest to the village next door), there was an annual ceremony going on which involved all-day (until 10 pm or so) playback of a CD of chanting in the village next door. Ubud’s greatest hits this was not. If you’re sensitive to nasally, all-day chanting from a tone-deaf 70 year old man while you’re on holiday, check whether there’s a ceremony coming up while you’re on the premises. There was no trace of the old man’s chanting from the other side of the resort so that might be a better bet.

The breakfasts that come as a part of the package are excellent, hearty affairs (American style etc. with fresh-squeezed juice selection and good strong brewed coffee).

A couple of words of caution: the wi-fi is patchy if you need to remain connected at all times, the TV selection in the studio seemed very limited in case you want to spend your holiday in front of the tube and don't plan on using the fitness centre as it's in a pretty bad state of repair (you could do some dumbbell curls and some bench presses but that's about it).

Make sure you ask to take a look at the owner’s gallery of Indonesian and Asian art – it’s truly a sight to behold!

We would highly recommend this place as a base for exploring the central Bali region and Ubud and for unwinding in a lovely rural setting.

We spent 4 days in one of the studio rooms and could not fault anything during our stay (and believe me, I am quite hard to please). The room was huge and comfortable, resort as a whole, absolutely gorgeous and crammed full of antiques and local arts and crafts. Fantastic grounds and staff could not have done more for us. Highly recommend asking the staff to take you down to the river/waterfall for a swim. Definitely need to be accompanied as the current is deceptively strong but it was a great experience.

In all, can't recommend this place highly enough and will definitely return.
