“Friendly staff but what a dump”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2012

Where do I begin. First the staff were friendly and helpful. If it wasn't for them we would have left the first day of arrival. The entrance to the place was nice, the pool and the grounds and from there downhill. The bathroom needed renovation. Mold, mildew, bugs and who knows what else was on the walls and tub. It was terrible! The mosquito net had ton of holes so it was not effective. We had some kind of animal poop in the room every time we returned to the room. We had a variety of critters in the room. Our room was the last room so we were next to a dog that barked from 6:30 am until 11:30. He was insync with the rooster. Only one electrical plug for the whole room so if you plug in the fan you can't use the lamp or recharge your electronics. Only 3 light fixtures so the room was dark. I guess if it was lit well you would have seen how run down the place was. The worse place i have ever stayed at. We left after a couple of days. Lack of sleep and just not feeling comfortable in the room. The room was called South Pacific. I don't know what the other rooms look like but this one was terrible.

Room Tip: Don't stay here. There are other places closer, cheaper and cleaner. Karna hotel was nice clean...

After looking at agoda.com(hotel site) I decided that Matahari would be a clean and comfortable. Although when my family and I got there we were escorted by the extremely friendly staff to what seemed to be the shack of the hotel. Our room was terrible; the majority of nights there would be gecko turds scattered on the floor, bathroom floor, and the top of our ragged and hole-filled mosquito net. We at first didn't know what it was so we cleaned it ourselves, but after the 2nd night we noticed there were more and they were bigger. We asked the hotel staff what it was and the friendly man looked up into our rafters and said "Little geckos". The gecko poops that were on top of our mosquito net sometimes were able to slip through the net and onto our bed, leaving a lovely sprinkling of gecko turd. There was barely any space to put bags other then the floor which we refused to lay bags on because of gecko poop and ants. The bathroom was the major down point for us; the sink was barely hanging on, everything was dirty, spiders were abundant, geckos visited often, ants crawled up the walls, we even had a slug. The bathtub was dirty, there was no place to hang the shower head so you were forced to hold it above yourself. The place did have hot water but we figured that out after 2 cold showers, we asked the staff who kindly showed us that the hot and cold signs were on backwards. On our last day we sited a huge gecko on the inside of our ceilings making us very glad we were leaving. There were many rooms, each had names, ours was South Pacific. From the looks of other guests they didn't have as many problems as we did, so we guessed that some rooms have been renovated and ours was just left behind.

The staff were all very friendly though! Every morning breakfast was something different and very fresh. The pool looked nice although we never swam because we tried to distance ourself from the hotel. The location is great; very close to the Ubud Market, Palace, and other lovely shops.

All-in-all: The staff is friendly, location is great, pool looks nice, breakfast is good, but CHECK YOUR ROOM because of the dirty beds, bathroom, floor, and many creatures visiting, we made the mistake of staying.

Room Tip: Check your rooms before consenting. NEVER CHOOSE SOUTH PACIFIC.

Matahari has a great central location and quirky bungalows and some rooms even have Japanese tubs. This resort also has a very nice pool, overlooking a jungle and a cute living room/library style sitting area to relax in the evenings, shame the piano is too old to play! The resort in general is quite rundown, but i liked that about the place, it is not pretentious. The breakfast that's included was inedible, but with Bali Buddha a few steps down the road this is not a problem.

Room Tip: Ask to see all the room available, they all have individual quirkiness.

The staff were friendly, rooms - great value and the pool, oh the pool - loved it. Was a little surprised where they charged my 2 friends to use the pool.

Picked Matahari mainly due to the LP listing. I was intrigued to see they organise a daily afternoon tea, which their website also mentions. Sadly didn't happen while we were there.

Location is stunning, 10 mins walk from end of monkey forest road. 25 mins to forest itself, but a pleasant walk.

Rooms look great, but all smell of stale water. We looked at a variety of rooms. Problem overcome by leaving all the windows open, but to my partners consternation this seemed to invite in quiet a bit of the forest invertebrate population.

Pool is ok. Could do with a clean & only two sunbeds.

Breakfast very nice. No choice but a different variation on an omelette every morning. Served with fresh juice, fresh fruit & a bubbling water urn with tea & coffee available all day.

This place has huge potential, but it needs a feminine touch. The place seems to be run by guys & their eye for detail just isn't there.

All in all, a pleasant stay with great service throughout.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Matahari Cottages in March this year and enjoyed it so much that we returned after touring elsewhere during our Bali holiday.
It's a funky little place, lovely staff who treated us like we were family upon our return as opposed to the check in check out attitude of other places further down the tourist strip.
The themed rooms were variable, the first was pretty classy at $60 per night with an amazing bathroom that was modern and open to the elements..watching the sunrise through the trees was great first thing in the morning. Lovely room too.
When we returned we chose a cheaper room at $40 per night and although the location was fabulous, overlooking a tranquil pond with goldfish and lovely gardens, the room was less impressive but certainly acceptable. Bedside table lamps would have made the difference for me as I like to read before sleep. Not a big deal if that's not a priority for you. The staff did bring another lamp in for us but the power points weren't well placed.
However, the overall experience was great, I would return there as the location is perfect. Not too far away from the main tourist strip and markets, within walking distance but far enough away down a little laneway where you had a quiet and restful night.
The infinity pool on the edge of a ravine was pretty amazing too....the communal breakfast area was great for interacting with other guests and tea and coffee was available 24/7 for self service in the breakfast area beside the pool as were cocktails if that was your preference.
My only real complaint was the quality of the breakfast...it's hard to please all nationalities, Europeans may like sweet breakfast but Aussies generally prefer a savoury breakfast.
I didn't like the food they provided, only one choice per day and sweet pancakes didn't do it for me but others enjoyed them.
I would prefer to have a choice, but all things considered I have re booked for my return in October...I love the place.
You get what you pay for and I was happy with the overall service and friendliness of the staff and location.

Room Tip: There are rooms for all budgets and all preferences...jungle, modern, romantic, traditional, ones wi...
