We spent 4 days in Mandala Desa and it was amazing in every way. It was exactly what we were hoping to have while sightseeing Bali. It is located some 20 minutes car-ride from Ubud, next to a small rice field so location was perfect for us since it was an ideal base for day trips across Bali. They offer a free shuttle service to Ubud which is great and they also provide a driver for more distant locations. 450.000 IDR for 10hrs. Our driver Ketut was great and very enjoyable company so we ended up visiting all important temples and locations with him. All of the staff are extremly pleasant and helpful and the owner Jacinta is very welcoming and kind.
We stayed in a private villa and it was clean and free of bugs. There's a hidden outdoor shower and a huge patio overlooking the rice field.
If you're looking for a quiet, clean place that can arrange a lot of activities and has a good food, I cannot recommend it enough.

In retrospect, our stay in Mandala Desa was the highlight of our three week holiday on Bali and Gili Trawangang.

At first we were a little hesitant, since its location is about 10 km outside of Ubud. Once we arrived, we knew we had made the right choice though. A superb location, well kept spacious living - and sleeping quarters, a very service oriented staff and a pool to die for! Add to that a free shuttle service to the hustle and bustle of Ubud, a great choice of food and drink, a super friendly and attentive owner Jacintha, a relaxed and flexible attitude from all staff, and you have found yourself the perfect hide away to come back to after a day of whatever activity you have chosen to expose yourself to.

We would sit down on our terrace every night to witness what we called the "national geographic-show"; watching the swallows and bats competing for their food over the rice fields, listening to the "tock-eh's" of the geckos and enjoying an invariably pictoresque sunset ensured a perfect ending to the day.

The first floor room offers the best views of the surroundings, but quite frankly; all of the rooms are impeccable and great.

And then there are the nice little touches: bikes to use during your stay, an abundant array of up to date dvd's for the media hungry among us and a very well working wifi, all free of charge.

Sometimes Bali can be a bit heavy on the hustle and bustle, and you're never sure if the people you run into are really friendly, or just want to make a quick buck. Rest assured; you can let go of all those doubts when you arrive here.

A genuine gem, both for couples and families with children. 10 out of 10! Highly recommended for those who like to come back to peace and quiet after a hard day's work of being hassled for "transpor" or whatever the busy streets of Ubud have on offer.

Close to Ubud, yet outside of the touristic area, this is the place where you go to treat yourself to the calm atmosphere and breathtaking nature this area has to offer.
Very cozy, large and clean suites and villas that overlook rice fields and mountains. Kitchen is open all day to serve you good food. Service is very sharp and extremely friendly. The pool seems like a part of the natural surrounding.
Every kind of trip from there is available as well as transportation and massage treatments on demand.
Among the unique activities in the direct area are: a visit to the local market which is one of the main sources of Bali's paintings, walks through nature, and playing pool in open air (which is the local past time there).
Really good accommodation in a beautiful area.
Absolutely worth it!

We stayed at the hotel for 7 days and had a wonderful experience. We were 4 adults + 1 baby and the room (Garden Suite) was big enough. All the employees were warm and kind, making us feel really at home. The price was more than reasonable especially because of the recent decline of euro. The room and facilities were all clean and comfortable. You might be able to find some minor flaws if you are super picky, but I don’t think you could find any better place for the same price. We especially liked the swimming pool, which is small but charming. We also liked the area around the hotel. It certainly maintains the rurality which you cannot feel in Kuta or in Nusa Dua. The best way to enjoy the area is to ride a bicycle which you can rent for free. I will highly recommend the hotel to any visitors, especially to those going to stay in Bali for more than 5 days, although I also feel the desire to keep this place a secret from my fellow Japanese.

We stayed at Madela Desa for three nights and had a wonderful, relaxing time. We stayed in the last villa and were really impressed by the personal touches in the room. The hotel arranged for a member of staff to meet us at the airport and drive us to the hotel. Even though we were over an hour delayed and it was late at night, the driver still offered to wait for us if we wanted to have dinner in central Ubud, before going to the hotel. This set the standard for the whole of our stay. We received a delicious welcome drink and snacks on arrival. The staff were really helpful and arranged our transport and a massage (which was fantastic!). The hotel overlooks rice fields and is really quiet. The outside shower/bath is carefully secluded by statues - it was a great experience to shower whilst looking at the rice paddies. The food was delicious, particularly the chicken curry. A really romantic getaway.

We stayed a few times in Bali, but this year we wanted for the first time to hibernate. Two months in the rainy season, in the center of the island. In and around Ubud there are many accommodations in all price ranges. We sought a stay in a quiet area where we would feel at home, where care is adequate without being annoyingly "pampered". It is perhaps useful to mention, that my wife and I are 66 and 67 years old.
In advance, we had a good contact by e-mail with Jacinta. She is from the Netherlands. She is friendly and tries to make all the guests feel comfortable. Guests often talk about hospitality, but here you really experience it.
The guests have complete control about their day. This applies to the hours of meals and also for planning a trip or the time of cleaning the rooms.
Mandala Desa is tucked away in the rice fields not far from Sukawati, known for its art. There are bicycles available for guests and a car and driver are ready to bring you to Ubud, Mas, Celuk or Batubulan between 9am-9pm. At a reasonable rate one of the competent and careful drivers will bring you to any destination on the island. You travel in a comfortable minivan with air conditioning. The drivers speak good English and know Bali very well.
Since we would stay there very long, we made a well considered choice. We have previously stayed in hotels or we rented a villa with staff. Each formula has its advantages and disadvantages. At Mandala Desa they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner or you can go to a restaurant somewhere else. The rooms are equipped with mini-bar, there are facilities for making coffee and tea and you have a device with potable water. The villas have an outdoor shower/bath.
What particularly appealed to us was the good atmosphere at Mandala Desa. The 10-member staff tries to make all guests feel comfortable. There is a relaxed atmosphere, but professional. The privacy of the guest is strictly respected. The two villas, back in the domain, are particularly suitable for those who like to have more space, a private bale (pavilion) and patio. The meals are brought to the villa or to another place in the garden (for example by the pool). We have spent many hours sitting quietly reading, listening to music and enjoying the beautiful and ever-changing landscape. There is free WiFi with internet access. You have a compact music system and TV with DVD player. There is a small library and DVD collection.
Who the first time by the narrow road arrives at the resort, will be wondering where he has arrived. But then you know that you have found a wonderful place where the so renowned Bali-sense prevails. The village temples are just around the corner. You're not on an artificial island but in a living community. The friendly people will greet you when you walk around in the neighborhood.
However, the potential guest must adjust in some ways his or her expectations. Mandala Desa is not a luxury resort where a butler does everything for you. The meals are provided and tasty, but the menu is more limited than in an upscale restaurant. The equipment of the villas is - we feel - complete and thorough, but do not expect designer furniture. The construction is authentic Balinese style with alang-alang grass roofs. But that means that geckos and other animals are also alive. Those who do not tolerate an ant on his terrace will be unhappy. The dogs in the villages can be quite tricky, but they are a necessary evil. They guard and they keep the rats from the rice fields. Who does not like the concert of frogs in the evening, better stays elsewhere. But who wants to stay in the centre of the beautiful countryside of central Bali, will feel very happy here.
Finally, we were not sponsored to write a positive review. We do it only for potential guests to help determine their choice (and to avoid any disappointment) if they want to stay in Bali. Are you looking for (extreme) luxury and comfort, opt for a hotel or a villa in Nusa Dua, Legian, Seminyak, Ubud or Lovina. The choice is overwhelming, some prices as well. Do you want to experience the real village life, find peace and privacy in an affordable class, then you are at Mandala Desa at the right place.
We hope that you, like us, will have a great time in Bali!

Room Tip: The two villas, back in the domain, are particularly suitable for those who like to have more space.

We stayed at Mandala Desa for four nights, and it has a lot of things to recommend it. Jacinta, the owner, is a very nice and helpful person, as are all her staff. Pick up at the airport, and several drives to Ubud and other nearby places was included. The overall atmosphere of Mandala Desa is pretty, peaceful and relaxing.

Our room was large and nicely furnished. The bed was big and comfortable, although the wicker chairs are not particularly comfortable for long periods of sitting. Planning our activities was made easier by the very helpful information left in the room. There was also a small fridge.

The large water dispenser in the bathroom was handy and so much easier than constantly fiddling with small bottles. There a large bath/shower outside, which was nice to use. However, you need to be a bit agile to step into it.

There is a large collection of DVD's to borrow from. I was a little disappointed that it was so difficult to walk in the neighbourhood because of all the hostile dogs I repeatedly encountered, but that's not the hotel's fault.

Views are great no matter where you are in the room or outside. The food was really very good, and you shouldn't hesitate to order from the menu. We also got to go to a local Balinese dance show that Jacinta kindly told us about.

Mandala Desa is one of those places you regret to leave, knowing that your next hotel will have a lot to measure up to. Recommended!
