“Great views, cool evening breeze but bad and slow service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

We stayed here 2 nights. We had a big villa just besides the pool. The view from our terrace and the balcony were amazing. It will be difficult to find a room with these views. We also enjoyed the cool breeze in the evenings coming from the valley. The villa had two separate rooms or apprtments, one on ground floor and one on the first floor. Both with their own entrance. Our kids could stay alone in one room but with small kids this might not be a good solution. The villa had a nice terrace where we had our breakfast one of the days. We ate lunch and dinner here once, but that was not a good idea. The restaurant food was quite bad, and took a long time, so do not waste time and money here. Take a taxi to Ubud instead. From the hotel we took a guide and went on a 4 hour walk through the valley which was fantastic. Yes, you really need the guide to find your way!
Stay at this place for the great views, the cool evening breeze and the nice walk in the valley. But is you want value for money, there are much better places to go, with better service as well.

Room Tip: With young kids the villa we stayed in might not be a good solution. There is a room on ground floor...

We last stayed at the Sayan Terrace Resort twelve years ago and thankfully it still has the same laid back appeal. The views are staggering and that is really what tempted us again.
The room we stayed in was a little dark and tired but we could overlook that just to be able to sit on our terrace and relax and admire the wonderful landscape before us.
We had our meals delivered to our room as the restaurant is really only a couple of tables set out on a lawn. The food is slightly limited and not terribly exciting but it always arrived on time and everything we wanted was there i.e. we didn't have to ask for another knife, plate etc.
Our only gripe really was that our room was right next to the pool which was good for us but every day there were a lot of noisy children enjoying themselves. It didn't help us to relax at all. There is also building going on in the adjacent property although the owner did say he has an agreement for building from the site between 9.30 and 4.30 each day.

We enjoyed a great stay at Sayan Terrace. The staff were very helpful and our room had a private pool which had a fantastic view over the valley below. Breakfast was served in our room which was very nice too. The Four Seasons is just next door, which is well worth a look at too.

We stayed 2 nights at the Sayan Terrace, and will go back again without hesitation. We have travelled to Bali over 30 times and this is without doubt the best view from a room we have had.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and because it is a fairly small resort you get that extra attention. Breakfast is served on your balcony (or any other meal you order) so you can sit in privacy and overlook the rice fields.

Room Tip: top floor for the best views

The instant we arrived at our room at Sayan Terrace I felt a calm come over me. After doing a lot of travelling around the island, it was a joy to sit back on our balcony and just hear nothing and see such great views of a river valley with nothing man made around.

This is a small family run, fairly un-organised place but at price that doesn't break the bank unlike some of the hotels very nearby. So you're getting the same view and peace that people who are staying at the four seasons next door are getting for at least a fifth of the price. Some confusion as to what's happened to the restaurant - seems to have been pulled down for redevelopment or something but this benefits by you getting delivered your breakfast to your terrace in the morning. In the evening we tried the four seasons (pricey, but beautiful food) and also went into Ubud itself.

Things to be aware of;

This is not a high end hotel. It's perfect the way it is, but the rooms are quite open to the elements and bugs. Mosquito nets were provided in our room, however every time I moved them I got dust allergies and they weren't totally effective anyway (a bit gappy).

Don't bother going for a room with the double bath - the water pressure is so low that you can't actually get anywhere near filling the bath before the water in it goes cold - then the water starts running cold as well. The shower is fine. Soap dispensers are in the bathrooms, but no soap provided at the handbasin (in a different room).

The hotel is in the middle of no-where (sayan, rather than ubud). This obviously has its benefits, but to get to ubud itself you need to taxi around (about 40,000-50,000 IDR). If you ask at reception, then we found they would drop you into town for a small price and there's plenty of Taxi's in down (although all unmarked) who roam around looking for business. Around the hotel there is little in the way of warungs - just other hotels.

I was happy with my room, think it was either 105 or 106 (we had the upstairs one) which was next to the pool (rarely used while we were there).

A torch will come in handy for walking around at night.

We have stayed at Sayan Terrace five times over the past decade or so, usually for a week. The setting is absolutely gorgeous--maybe the best hill views on Bali. Staff are wonderful. There is a small pool. If you want a big pool for lap swimming, Taman Bebek next door will sell you a day pass. Sayan is doing some construction, on and off, so ask about that when making reservations. The rooms are aging a bit, but they are huge and clean. Many have great, huge verandas from which you can enjoy the view.

We adored our stay in this beautiful hotel... It wasnt our first trip and it certainly won't be the last.

Service is great, with a really friendly staff team. One evening we asked to hire a motorbike and were simply "lent" one, with no charge, another time we asked for a taxi- again a member of staff was on hand to drive us into town, and for less than £1.50

Breakfasts are served in your room, we enjoyed fruit, pancakes and Balinese coffee, all overlooking the Sayan ridge
