Our stay at the Arma Resort was the ideal way to to start our Bali holiday - it offers friendly staff, art and performance, quiet nights and two very good restaurants all within expansive and beautiful gardens. Unwinding was easy and and with all the hustle, colour and flavours of central Ubud within easy reach (quite walkable, but maybe the free shuttle or a taxi is a better option).
It isn't a luxury resort and there's no swim up bar or nightclub, but the rooms are large and clean and tea and cake is served each afternoon by the pool.
Along with art museums, the resort is part of a complex dedicated to preserving and promoting Balinese Art, Culture and History and guests are encouraged to participate - we were lucky enough to be there for the opening of an exhibition Song of Bali tracing the development of modern Balinese Art - the event included dance, gamelan speeches and a massive feast.
I also took a cooking class personally delivered by the resort's executive chef and learnt the construction and diverse use of a bumbu.
We'll be back.
