I'm a little late on this review, but I promised the manager I would so here it goes. I took my wife and 9 y/o son to Ubud in May and stayed at Alam Shanti for one week. The location is excellent. Walking distance to the Monkey Forest and into the town of Ubud. Alam Shanti is actually in the quiet village of Nyuhkuning, but it is a quick walk into the heart of Ubud. It's nice on the motorbike path/trail that skirts along side the Monkey Forest. You see plenty of monkeys but don't have to pay. Don't get me wrong it was well worth it to pay once and go check out the monkeys, but when you stay at Alam Shanti you get a little taste of the Monkey Forest for free every time you walk into Ubud. The rooms are great. Much nicer decor than the Bali Hyatt in Sanur(although we loved it there too). You place your order for the complimentary breakfast the night before and they will deliver it to your room. We ate every morning on our balcony overlooking the beautifully manicured grounds. My wife and son loved the spa. I chose to venture off the grounds and hit up one of the spa's on the way into ubud. these were cheaper, but my wife said the set and setting were no where close to the spa at alam shanti. guess you get what you pay for. The pool is nice and we had it to ourselves most of the time. The staff will bring cocktails, beer and food to you at the pool. This was a nice touch. There is a free shuttle that will take you into Ubud and pick you up after you have shopped or had dinner. The staff is friendly and will help you arrange activities such as whitewater rafting, kecak dance, dinner reservations, etc.... having a nice cool A/C in the room made for easy sleeping and the Wifi worked good enough for us although we didn't use it extensively . it would drop occasionally, but that wasn't a big deal to us. hope this review helps you on booking a nice vacation at the alam shanti

Loved the Balinese architecture & carved wooden furniture. Lovely gardens & pool overlooking rice paddock. Had the pool to ourselves when we were there. Staff were discreet & polite. Also stayed at Alam Indah - loved seeing the monkeys jumping from the rooftop (while sitting at the balcony!) to trees/pool area in the morning. More steps at Alam Indah. Staff were very helpful at Alam Indah with organising activities. Our lovely guide even came back at night & brought us to find fireflies. Gorgeous staff showed us how to weave baskets. Yummy breakfast - banana pancakes ummm.... Gorgeous bathroom & daily potpourri. Had a wonderful time.

This hotel is perfect, and I can't describe it any other way. Like a previous reviewer, I had been trying to book at Alam Shanti for years. After an unexpected move to Singapore and a quick try to get a room over Christmas, we finally got lucky! It was everything I had hoped.

It is located near the Monkey Forest, a little ways away from the town center. Not to worry as there is a free shuttle into town whenever you need it, or you could walk through the Monkey Forest. The check-in was smooth and easy, with welcome drinks on arrival. The grounds are dotted by individual villas, 2 floors each with a room on each floor. The rooms are large and decorated in traditional Balinese style. We stayed in the Shindu room and it was huge! The outdoor bathroom took some getting used to, but we adored the traditional feel and the large balcony to lounge on. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of storage space. Wifi connection from the room was also ok.

Breakfast was brought to the villa each morning and there is enough variety to try everything. I used to get quite excited for breakfast! It was all yummy and we never went hungry. We always took afternoon tea on our balcony, and ordered room service a few times - the food was excellent and a great value.

The staff are so very nice, ready to answer questions and help as needed. The hotel is peaceful, beautifully landscaped and feels authentically Balinese. We rented bikes from a shop near the hotel and biked the rice paddies and around town. Ubud is busy and very touristy but when you return to Alam Shanti each day, you appreciate where you are. The hotel really made my experience in Bali all the better. I had stayed near Nusa Dua on a previous visit and left Bali feeling unimpressed.

We had a spa treatment there and it was good. I was slightly disappointed with the spa room however, as it was quite bright. Our treatment was in the rooms near the pool, while other spa rooms near the entrance seemed darker. My husband also had a haircut there and it turned out great.

If you can get a room here, just book it! It's perfect and will make your holiday that much more memorable.

We've tried to book at Alam Shanti for the past few years but could never get a room. Finally this year, after booking several months in advance, we scored!

We booked both the Gangga and Yamuna rooms together for our family of four. One suite would have been adequate in size but it was nice to have a completely private villa with our own pool. Both suites had wonderful rice field views, though Gangga was slightly better due to its height advantage. Yamuna maybe has a better terrace as its slightly larger and has a beautiful daybed with mosquito netting, perfect for afternoon naps.

The neighborhood is very nice. It reminds me of Ubud back in the 90's. And the quick walk past Monkey Forrest makes this an excellent location. Driving around takes much longer so we preferred to walk.

We found two favorite restaurants nearby -- Coffee and Copper right at entrance to MF. And D'Waroeng down the street to the left after you exit the driveway, and then turn right at the end of the street. Its just across the road. The chef used to cook at the Amandari hotel, and she is very talented. We ate here several times; our last visit she prepared smoked duck for us... Yum! The ribs were also wonderful.

We had a wonderful two nights here at the start of our Bali holiday. We'd been busy at work and really wanted a complete relax/chill time to kick off our holiday. Alam Shanti was the perfect choice.

We stayed in Indus, an upstairs room. It's worth paying a bit more for this as it's so private and spacious. Huge bathroom with a lovely bath and separate shower and large dressing area and four poster bed. Loved the balcony - we enjoyed breakfast (included) and room service dinner here. Fantastic food. Some of the best meals we had in Bali. It comes from the sister restaurant Lake Leke (which we also ate at - delicious) so was slightly cold by the time dinner reached us, but not an issue for us at all. Just so peaceful - the gardens are stunning (and no wonder when you see how many gardeners they employ!).

Lovely pool area with great lounge chairs - and the spa gave great massages. They were quite a bit more expensive than the usual Bali massages, but definitely worth the price as it's so well done, including the large couple sized room with adjoining shower room (I felt a bit disappointed in massages at other places).

We paid US$135 per night including breakfast which I thought was really reasonable.

Definitely keen to return - hopefully with a group so we can stay at the villa with private pool!

Having visited Ubud many times I was not prepared to find something totally new and unexpected and so totally wonderful.
Stayed in a two storied building with a villa on each level and a very large pool set in extensive gardens. Each villa had an enormous verandah type entertainment area with days beds, dining table and lounge with extraordinary views over the stream, jungle and through to the rice fields. No TV and total serenity. I will be back again and again.

My wife and I stayed for 8 nights at Alam Shanti. We had a beautiful suite called Gangga. It was located on the second floor and shared a very nice private pool with the suite below (Yamuna suite). The property features nicely manicured gardens, a small, open reception area and another swimming pool for the rest of the suites. Breakfast is included in the room rate and was delivered every morning to the room. You had to call the night before to order and schedule time of delivery. In the afternoons you can also enjoy tea and cake service in your room or by the pool.

They arranged airport pick-up, which was reasonably priced and very efficient.

The Gangga Suite is decorated in a traditional Balinese style. It is furnished with a king bed and a full bed, so it is also suitable for families. There is a day bed in the large balcony, which overlooks the rice fields. The balcony also features a nice dining set, which is where we always took our breakfast. The open bathroom is very large. It features a shower and tub on one side, toilet and sink cabinet in the center, and a garden shower on the opposite side. A nice touch was having flower petals in a bowl next to the bathtub, which we certainly used and added to the romantic ambiance of the room.

We scheduled a very a trip to see the temples on the eastern side of Bali through the hotel. Transportation to the center of Ubud is conveniently provided free of charge. We found that the fastest way to get back to Alam Shanti was going to Cafe Wayan (owned by the same people) and requesting a driver.

Now a small note: you will be surrounded by nature and there is not much you can do to avoid geckos and salamanders. In Balinese culture they are seen as the first inhabitants of a house and therefore must be kept there. Every night we could hear in our suite one or two geckos doing their very particular noise. By day four or five of our stay, upon arrival to the room I got to see the gecko crawling up on a wall (they stay on the ceiling most time). It was quite uggly, a black creature probably eight inches long and three inches wide. I did not tell my wife that I actually saw the gecko until we left the hotel, because most probably we would have had to check out immediately. (I kept seeing the gecko crawling on the high ceiling beams). I'm sure that they are not dangerous, but can certainly understand that some people can be very affraid of these animals, as well as salamanders (which, by the way, you will find many of them in the bathroom at night time). Just close your mosquito nets, turn off the lights and enjoy the "singing" of the geckos at Alam Shanti!

Appart from the small gecko issue, everything was PERFECT at Alam Shanti and I can certainly recommend it.
