We have just returned from 9 nights at Alam Shanti - our second visit in just over a year. We really love this place - the rooms are big and comfortable - love the outdoor bathroom in Shindu room. The staff are unfailingly charming and helpful. The breakfast is good and there is plenty to choose from so you don't get tired of the same thing everyday. The gardens are lovely and so peaceful - love the frogs and geckos that hang around the rooms!! The quality of sleep is great - once you get used to the early morning rooster!! The pool is nice and the spa treatments very professional. Really no complaints at all - for the price you pay this hotel is an absolute bargain - we will be back again soon for sure!!

Room Tip: Shindu room has a great outdoor bathroom. Upper rooms have a balcony - downstairs rooms a verandah...

We honeymooned in Bali and finished our stay at Alam Shanti (having originally booked there but because AS was full, we stayed at a sister hotel Alam Jiwa the first couple nights). The grounds are amazing and the staff was wonderful. Our upstairs room was incredible, with wraparound windows and more space than we could imagine. The complimentary tea (or coffee) and cake in the afternoon and the big yummy breakfast were great touches too. There were more families and kids than I expected, but they were all very chill and respectful. The monkey forest is near by and the village of Nyuhkuning is still quaint and cute. Their complimentary taxi service into and out of Ubud is perfect - plus it allows you to avoid all the taxi drivers in the city.

One big piece of advice - Ubud is NOT what we expected. The books and sites we read told us that it was a "must-visit" as the "cultural heart of Bali." Perhaps this is the case, but all we saw were lame tourist shops, generic restaurants selling international fare and thousands upon thousands of guys asking us if we needed taxi rides. The experience of walking through Ubud-proper was pretty terrible because of all the soliciting. IF YOU WANT TO VISIT UBUD, STAY IN NYUHKUNING - DO NOT STAY IN UBUD. Or at least that's our advice. Getting out of the cities was our only hope of enjoying the natural and local experience of Bali. The Banyan Tree Bike tour was especially awesome.

Room Tip: Try to get upstairs rooms!

We were 2 families travelling together and we booked Alam Shanti for 4 nights. We had the Indus / Narmada Villa which was better than I expected. I had read all the reviews and looked at the photos of Alam Shanti, but to be there in reality was SO much better. It exceeded all expectations.
We had the whole compound to ourselves, including outdoor kitchen area. The gardens are beautiful and the flowers and water lillies are everywhere.Listening to the frogs call to each other at night while we were sitting outside having a drink was lovely.
There is a free shuttle into Ubud and its only a short walk through the monkey forest to the main street. Our beds were very comfortable, although our friends complained that their bed wasnt ,( they were in Indus which is downstairs ) and after checking, we saw they had only a foam mattress on their bed, while we had mattresses with inner springs. That was a shame, as otherwise they thought it was wonderful. The pool area is so nice and quiet, and we only saw one other couple , who like us, only wanted to relax by the pool.
Only thing I can fault is that they need more glasses and coffee cups and perhaps a kettle to be in the outdoor kitchen as it would be nice to make some coffee or tea when you liked. Otherwise it was perfect, my only regret was I didnt get to stay a bit longer and spend one whole day doing nothing but listening to the serenity !!!!

Room Tip: We had the Narmada / Indus house. We were upstairs as we have 2 children and we found it great, lots...

Absolutely beautiful. Authentic Balinese style architecture and design. Our room overlooked terraced rice paddies. Breakfast was a beautiful selection from an area restaurant. Choices included banana pancakes (thin crepes with then banana slices, coconut and caramelized brown sugar), typical Indonesian breakfast or more Western offerings (eggs, meats, etc.). the staff was incredibly warm, discrete and helpful. The location is probably the best or worst thing about it depending on your preferences. It is a 10-15 minute walk in to the center of town so it is very quiet. If you're looking for a hotel in the heart of it all, this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for sanctuary from the noise and bustle of Ubud, then definitely grab a room if one is available. We booked way in advance and they only had the one room we took. there is a free shuttle to and from town and if you're feeling more adventurous, you can walk down Monkey Forest Road. Monkeys on all sides, so tuck your watch and sunglasses and any other shiny objects away!

Room Tip: The website was very helpful in helping us view the room beforehand.

Alan shanti fully lives up to it's reputation and reviews and indeed exceeded expectations.

Rooms are spectacular with all staff superb and keen to help however they can . For those that dont want to walk to Ubud (approx 25 mins thru Monkey forest) the shuttle service to/ from Ubud works well. However we found the local restaurant options excellent with the added bonus of local dances in a much more intimate environment than offered in Ubud. As a result we used the shuttle significantly less than we had expected taking trips during the day (cycling, walking, cooking), enjoying Alam Shanti in the afternoon (including the in house spa/ massage - Alam Wangi and the pool) and then having dinner locally. The gardens are a gem - all very relaxing.

Alan Shanti was a great contributor to an unforgettable holiday - highly recommended!

A couple of things that I would like to add. First, if you are going to stay here, splurge and book either the Gangga suite or Yamuna suite with a private pool and a fabulous view from the terrace of the rice fields. Fantastic his and hers outdoor showers. Private pool has a waterfall on one end. Web site pictures do not do the suites justice. We opened up all the windows and enjoyed the refreshing evening breeze as we slept. Breakfast was served on our large verranda overlooking the rice fields. Both company restaurants are very nice, although you might want to skip the shows they put on 5 nights per week. To us, the shows were lame. The Monkey Forest is 5 minutes up the road - a must do. Service is impeccable. Mini bar prices reasonable. Free transportation around Ubud.

What can we add? we can just echo that of others who have been blessed by a stay in this wonderful place...we went as part of our honeymoon in March 2010 and it was our most favourite place the whole trip across china, vietnam, malaysia and bali! we loved the 'rooms' - more like suites! We stayed in Shindu (downstairs) for the most part and 1 night upstairs in Dewi. Both fab but Shindu wins hands down! The outdoor bathroom was fun and all part of the experience! We didn't see a soul the whole 5 days we were there except when we went on a bike tour of bali (banyan tree - highly recommended!) and met another couple who we discovered were staying there too! Service impeccable - would drop us in town and pick us up whenever we wished (particularly handy in a tropical downpour!) the rooms were simply exquisite and were like a private paradise. Having our breakfast on the veranda each morning looking out over the gardens in the gorgeous sunshine was absolute bliss...and we could have been the only ones there! even at the pool we never saw other guests..just wonderful staff. the ultimate in blissful relaxation, and location was fab too. we particularly loved the dinner dance and AMAZIING cooking class at Lake Leke...highly recommended also. We WILL return...too amazing not to. Thank you Alam Shanti, we had a simply perfect stay.
