“Magical”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

We stayed at the villa (#1) for Nyepi with another couple. It was the right place to stay for the day of silence. The attention to detail and service was extraordinary. The grounds are immaculate. The open air dining for breakfast was heavenly. Have never stayed in a more beautiful place. It is hard to capture the beauty in photographs. It is probably the nicest place we have ever stayed in every way imaginable.

Room Tip: the villa (#1) has a private pool. It used to be the vacation home of the property owner.

We stayed for a total of 8 nights in October 2012 and from the moment we arrived we felt completely at home and well looked after. Every year we spend many hours planning our October trip and seeking to find the best places to stay which don't involve too much travel time from our home in Tokyo, particularly with a young child. The effort we put into researching -namely selecting the No.1 trip advisor recommendation for Bali - was very well spent.

This was our first trip to Indonesia and we were extremely impressed by Bali - the people, the food, the atmosphere - and I know this sounds like an advert for investing - the infrastructure. We were met at the airport for the fast track visa service - which was well worth it after an overnight flight from Tokyo - and by the way Garuda airlines was far better than we had expected (far better than most US airlines and Virgin...). We arrived well before we could check in - however the staff really took care of us taking our bags and letting us have a relaxation in the pool.

This is when we first sampled the great food from the chef. I really want to say many wonderful things about Dean the head chef. How he managed to cater for all the guests while making us feel like he was looking after us personally is a great skill. His menu food was excellent - but what was even more fabulous was the off-piste request we gave him to make us any meal he wanted to cook. It was really very fine - and we are used to eating well in Tokyo. Not only that but he found lots of time to really entertain our son. He took him to feed the fish and swans - and also spent time taking him around his private garden - giving him things to taste and smell while explaining things to him. Our son - he was just about to turn 5 - was completely devoted to him and still talks about him. For us food is one of the most important things about travel - we were not disappointed. There was one small error - on Dean's night off involving a small amount of clingfilm which had fallen into one of the soups. we didn't find this too offensive - particularly as we were eating in the rice paddy platform experiencing the romantic meal to celebrate our wedding anniversary. On discovery of this (from his own staff as we had said nothing) Dean was extremely apologetic and invited us to a meal at his own expense. On another occasion our son had a wonderful time with a couple of other children his age making pizzas with Dean.

We do recommend the rice paddy romantic platform meal - which really is in the middle of the rice fields and lit by candles. Really an amazing experience- although please be a little careful if (like my wife) you have a serious frog phobia! I got to play the gallant husband by carrying her back to the restaurant at the end of a wonderful meal. There are many frogs croaking around the lily ponds and rice paddies - which I think are great, but she didn't!

We stayed in a pool villa - which was really great and private. However, in the end we didn't use the pool so much as the main pool was so much fun. Our butler Bawa - really couldn't do enough for us and was extremely helpful to us. Even taking our son away to play football, fly kites and generally do the sort of thing that 4 year olds really enjoy. All the staff were great with our son - and that's why we were very surprised to read a recent review that said that Chedi Club wasn't child friendly- this was absolutely not our experience. We very much enjoyed our walk with Bawa around Chedi club and into the local village. He was very kind to take us into the head of securities house to meet his family and to see what a Balinese house is like. We didn't feel awkward as everyone was very kind - we really felt that Chedi club was part of the community and put much back into the local people. The room was always immaculate and they must all do some serious towel art training! There were endless little touches that provided surprise and delight and made our stay feel out of the ordinary.

We also strongly recommend having at least one massage when you are there - particularly if you have the doors open over the paddy fields. We had several wonderful massages and were suitably relaxed. Also - do take advantage of afternoon tea - and the fabulous Balinese breakfast (particularly the yellow chicken curry) which really negated the need for any lunch. Pre-dinner cocktails were always appreciated - particularly the Tanah Gajah Purple.

We took a few trips out and about in Bali. Particular highlights were the Elephant Safari - which was a really wonderful place and seemed as much a place for the elephants to have a good time as it was for tourists - there was no sense of mistreatment of the animals. We also took a day trip across Bali to sample some local produce - such as the Kopi Luwak (coffee), Kintamani, the famous rice terraces and a wonderful temple complex. Our driver and guide from the hotel could not have been better - he was both attentive and knowledgable without ever making us feel awkward or pressured. We very much enjoyed going to a local art gallery - and ended up purchasing a couple of paintings to remind us of the wonderful holiday we had. We only spent a couple of hours one late afternoon in Ubud - and frankly we should have spent longer. The transport from the hotel and the free telephones they lent to us to call when we needed picking up was always extremely convenient and well thought through.

Try and ensure that you take advantage of the Kecak dancing in the hotel - it was quite a spectacle and our son too was captivated from beginning to end.

This was the first time that we had chosen resort that didn't have a beach. Did we miss it? No, not in any way - this was an exceptional hotel run by wonderful people in an amazing location. So good that we have just booked again for our October trip this year. This will be the first time that we will return to the same location for a vacation, however to maximise our massage time we have booked a spa villa this time!

Enormous thanks to all the staff particularly Dean, Bawa and the general manager Simon. Looking forward to seeing them all soon.

I stayed here with my parents for 5 nights and at the end we didn't want to leave, it was that good. The scenery of the rice fields is picturesque especially when you are in the restaurant (which is surrounded by the paddy fields).
The staff (many thanks particularly to Darma, our butler) were so friendly to us, helping us with booking and recommending restaurants. The architecture was beautiful and made you appreciate the culture and religion unlike some of the beach resorts.
Only negative was that the food was overpriced for what it was, however it didn't bother us as we only ate once at the hotel, preferring to go out to dinner and then return for the hotels excellent cocktails after dinner.
Overall a must for anyone going to Bali. (written by Felix, age 12)

We booked to at the Chedi Club after a grueling 14 day birding trip to Sulawesi staying in some very basic accomodation feeling that we deserved a little pampering after our exertions.

The pool villa was all that we wanted a private oasis in which we could lock ourselves away and rest. We only called on the butler to deliver our afternoon tea and collect laundry and he respected our privacy.

In the public areas however the manner of the staff was somewhat over zelous for our personel taste, although we can imagine others might be flattered by so much attention. At meal times a constant tide of waiters were in attendance clearing away dishes at lightening speed and ever watching for an opportunity to be of service. On top of all this an array of managers seemed at hand to enquire if we were satisfied and engage us in conversation. We are perhaps an exceptionto the rule but feel that perfect service should be ubobtrusive and in our opinion slightly less fuss would result in that perfection.

We cannot agree that food and drinks were overpriced as they were somewhat less costly than top class international hotels the world over. After the excellent breakfast, afternoon tea, mini bar and evening cocktails all of which were included in the room rate there was little need to buy additional food or drink other than perhaps a glass of wine with dinner.

The surroundings were extremly peaceful and the hotel grounds magnificent, which for us added up to the perfect locationfor our break without the need to explore further.

No detail is left undone. Every employee in the resort is dedicated to ensuring your stay is customized to you. The property is one of the nicest I have seen, but you can see that from the pictures. What you can't see is the attention to detail, no request is too big. All I can say is you want your driver to me Karli but most importantly your Butler to be Darma. The rest will work itself out. Enjoy every moment!

The architecture of this hotel is amazing and the place is peacefull and quite. The only negative point was the restaurant (overprized food and wines not at the standard that it schould be for a 5 star hotel). Small but good spa.

My wife and I had a very enjoyable stay in one of the pool villas but mixed feelings about an unfortunate turn of events during our checkout.
The hotel is located very close to Ubud so it is easy to escape to the local restaurants.
The food at the hotel is acceptable however there are a wider range culinary delights on offer in Ubud at sensible prices.
The room and butler service was exemplary and overall our stay was very relaxing until checkout, when my wife and I discovered that both of our credit cards had suddenly gone missing.
Luckily imprints of our cards had been taken by reception when we first checked in so luckily they were able to settle our incidentals. Given the warm and seemingly genuine service we had received during our stay, we thought that the manager would be compassionate enough to add a small cash advance to the total of our bill, (as we now had absolutely no cash and no credit cards and four more days remaining in Bali).
Unfortunately the hospitality ceased while the settling of our bill, (using the original imprints of our credit cards and a free call to visa to cancel them), That was it, no cash advance was approved and the manager disappeared back into his office leaving his staff to awkwardly see off two very distressed guests.
We found this to be quite a souring experience as both of our credit cards had just gone missing on the premises and as far as the manager was concerned the royal service was over, he might as well have said 'see you later and good luck out there on the streets with no money'.
Please learn from our mistake and use the safes provided. Personal belongings can still go missing, no matter how respectfull and terrified of the boss the staff might seem.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. D,

It is extremely unfortunate that you are still unconvinced that our hands were tied in the matter of a cash advance. Please let me restate my position briefly without going into another discussion of this matter, which is already done personally between us via e-mail about six months ago.

Upon your checkout I was personally present to make sure that any help you needed was being given. I myself called Visa to make sure your credit cards were reported. As I said before, I was in the hotel until late the same evening, just a call away.

I hope that the policy of our hotel (and others) is understandable: cash advances on missing credit cards are not permitted and it's easy to see why – if merchants were permitted to do this, stolen credit cards would regularly be used as cash machines, there being no proof that the cash withdrawn on your credit card (without the card being physically present) was for you.

However inane and inconvenient these rules, they are done as security measures to protect credit card holders.

Again, I sincerely apologize for not being able to give you a cash advance.

I do however find it unfair for you to publicly claim that 1) the hotel isn't safe, 2) our staff are secretly looking out for unguarded credit cards, and 3) I am a terrifying person. I do hope that these comments are written in frustration with the situation and not as a description of our property.

I also thank you and assure you that because of this incident we have implemented a solution to be used in future emergency cases such as yours.

I hope that you will find this matter closed.

Kind regards,

Simon
