“Unforgettable...”
Reviewed February 23, 2012

From the moment we were picked up by The Chedi driver to take us to Ubud we just knew there was going to be something special about this trip. He was informative and helpful and upon arrival at the resort we were simply taken aback with its outstanding beauty. The website as wonderful as it is does not reflect how truly spectacular this place really is. A sanctuary set amongst what was once a private estate, there are 20 villas dotted about and linked effortlessly by lillypad ponds, elephant statues, reading and relaxing areas, an aviary, many beautiful features that keep you drawn to understanding that this was once owned by Indonesia’s biggest art collector and whom has kept many of his fantastic pieces still on display today at The Chedi.

On learning about the previous owner (Hendra Hadiprana) our very own butler (seriously..) was providing us with a guided tour of the property when he slipped in nonchalantly that we had been upgraded to the largest villa on site - we were shell-shocked – what an amazing and kind gesture! I had informed the hotel that this was a very special trip to celebrate our 1st Wedding Anniversary but I had never expected a treat like this was to be in store for us.
The Hadiprana House sits overlooking the rest of the grounds and is 550sqm so in other words...huge! It has been tastefully decorated with Indonesian and Balinese influences, comes with 2 huge sprawling bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with 7 showers....inside and out, living areas, kitchen, large swimming pool, outdoor ponds and private gardens and side access to the aviary and nearby restaurant are all a stone’s throw away. It truly was tremendous in every sense of the word! We loved all the little touches that the house included – ipod fully loaded with classic songs (and lucky for us, the first dance at our wedding).

Every day we were given afternoon tea complete with small treats followed then by cocktail hour again with more treats, all of which are complimentary! Not to forget that the house (and I believe this is for all villas at The Chedi) comes with a well stocked and well replenished mini-bar of spirits, Bintang and soft drinks. We were also fortunate enough to have snacks provide with ours.

Darma was our private butler and was a true gentleman. I miss him now with my afternoon tea...! He was quiet but in a polite and pleasant way. Always helpful, he was one step ahead at all times arranging and making suggestions for us. He would make up the room and turn it down without any ask and was an expert at making you feel relaxed whilst he still did his job. Should you ever require him you simply call #1 and a friendly voice would greet us with our names. Any request would be met with very promptly. Darma took us on our wedding anniversary for a trek through the properties rice paddies which are vibrant green against a clear blue sky (if you’ve seen Eat, Pray, Love then it’s exactly like that) and which finished by walking through his local village. We didn’t ever want to leave Hadiprana House but for this short 1hr trip it was worth it to really see what real life Bali is about. That day was very special for us and Darma and the staff at The Chedi really were exceptional. We were brought a celebration cake to enjoy and at night, a romantic meal was set-up alone especially for us dotted with candle lights. I had asked for this in the rice paddies but bad weather set-in but Darma was to the rescue and moved everything to the nearby Bird Lounge (just next door to our house) which was beautiful as thunder crashed above and lightning lit-up the place. The food was.....outstanding! We ate beautiful local dishes including crackling pork belly which was delicious. It really should be Michelin starred.

We also enjoyed a spa treatment that day which was mindblowing as we both looked over the rice paddies and watched local farmers at their work whilst listening to the beautiful tropical birds above. The spa was serene and relaxing, again a memorable experience of top class service from the staff.

The Chedi now means so much to us and is synonymous with luxury, elegance, peace and beauty all of which worked perfectly with such kind and friendly staff. You had a feeling that everyone knew your name, knew that this was a special trip for you and made you wish to never leave. It’s almost only worth going for such a special occasion as it felt that it would otherwise be ruined on ‘just another holiday’. And for us to know we celebrated our 1st year of marriage there was truly unforgettable.

As it was time to leave, we had one last walk around and went to depart to the sound of bird song and the Baliense drums in the background. The manager (very friendly) met with us and gave us a parting gift of rice from the local paddy which we thought was a kind touch. We thanked him for our upgrade and every inch of the hospitality and quality of produce and service we had experienced, it really did mean so much to us.

The Chedi felt like home and it was a trip that we will never ever forget...

Room Tip: Hadiprana House if you can stretch to it!!!

Quite simply there is nowhere on earth comparable to the Chedi Club, Tanah Gajah.
It is a truely exquisite boutique property, encircled by a sea of verdant rice-paddies
that typify the grace and serenity that Bali stands for. We were fortunate enough to
stay here for 6 nights during our honeymoon in September 2011; and I say that
because one could have chosen any number of outstanding properties in and around
Ubud, but what makes choosing this property such a reassuring experience is when you
arrive to discover you have entered the paradiscal sanctuary you envisaged it
would be...and so much more.

Indeed, in many ways, we felt like we had stepped in to an open air museum devoted to
elephants. The sheer artistic intricacy of the Chedi 'Ellies' is something that one will never forget about this unique sanctuary. The humorous ensemble of elephant statues as one approaches the reception area is absolutely delightful! Soon, before you know it, you are sitting in an elegant reception area - below a herd of flying minature elephants suspended
from the ceiling. I could go on, but I don't want to spoil the surprise that beholds those of you
who who have decided you cannot resist the charms of this magnificent property. Suffice to say there's an inventive treat around every corner of the Chedi...but it's sheer beauty lies in it's
mesmeric attention to detail - in more ways than one.

The villas are subliminal in beauty and decoration, and gave us many a peaceful night's
rest. We loved the characterful antique furniture and impressive Balinese paintings.
The wonderful roofless bathroom was an utter delight for my wife - equipped with a rain
shower, a bath adorned with colouful pettles and to our great amusement a telephone for those
moments when one is preoccupied with nature taking it's course.

The hotel grounds parallel its great majesty; scattered with tranquil lilly ponds and elegant geese, and if you're lucky a on clear day you can see the towering Mt Agung on the horizon. The pool was lovely and again - to no surprise - three comical elephants preside over the far end! One aspect that I particularly loved was making good use of the tennis court - I enjoyed several exhausting slug fests with the affable local pro.

The food was without question exceptional, and whilst the portions are not the biggest - the culinary pleasures were immense. The Balinese duck evening was quite oustanding and they also produced amazing satay and the ubiquitous Goreng dishes. Breakfast was also an absolute winner with delicious fresh fruits. I also thought it was a real bonus to have our soft drinks included at certain times of the day - otherwise to have 21% tax added on to already very pricey drinks would have wounded the wallet furthermore after my previous eye-watering hotel bill.

What often makes a property of this stature so special is the people who run it. Stefan the GM
runs his property with great efficency and his willingness to get to know his guests was manifest in his presence in the restaurant. Bjorn, the head chef was a real character and shared my passion for firey chillies - I admired his great pride in his work. Japa, our butler was a humble and quiet personality, he evidently did alot of work behind the scenes and went to great trouble to arrange an impressive display of pettles on our bed to wish me happy birthday. Our favourite individual, however (and she was our absolute best hotel staff member on our whole honeymoon), was Dewa - an utterly adorable and gracious Balinese lady who served us fautlessly in the restaurant. We loved her so much we really wanted to pack her up and take her home! She is a credit to the Chedi's team and I hope management take heed of this!

We did feel there were some things that require improvement. Whilst the massages were good, theywere definitely not worth the steep price tag. I also felt it was improper and somewhat outrageous to charge guest Rs 110,000 for a one way taxi in to town after 6pm. This almost felt like one was being penalised for not eating in - when part of the Ubud culinary experience is to sample some of the excellent restaurants in the vicinity. I can only encourage management to take a serious look at this because it is so unecessary.

I cannot heap enough praise on this inimitable property and all the wonderful people who make it work so seamlessly. If Brahma is the Highest God of the Balinese faith - then this is his residence.

Stayed for three nights was thoroughly impressed with The Chedi Club. The property contains only 20 villas and suites but is well spread out with beautifully kept gardens and nice statues with a mainly elephant theme.
We stayed in a pool villa which was spacious and looked over rice paddies. The pool was a decent size and the choice of sun lounges, bale and couch was perfect for relaxing. A Bose stereo with an ipod dock and speakers in the pool area also added to the experience.
We dined mainly at the restaurant with all meals being above the standard expected. The staff was very friendly and the service could not be faulted.Special mention to our Butler Putra who handled all our requests in a friendly and professional manner. The Manager Simon added a personal touch speaking to us when he could without being intrusive.
A beautiful resort about 10 minutes by car to Ubud which I have no hesitation in recommending The Chedi Club.

My wife and I had read the reviews of this beautiful place, but nothing could have prepared us for two days of heavenly scenery, tranquility and professional elegance of The Chedi Club. The lingering memory is of quiet, well kept gardens, only 20 secluded villas placed well apart that blends seamlessly into a expansive paddy field. The coming together of modern comfort, an open dining area with the happy sounds of farmers going about their daily livelihood, be it be shepherding a flock of geese, or turning rivulets of water this way or that for irrigation is not something I am likely to find anywhere in North America. Simon Spiller and his staff were superb, but unobtrusive, helpful but in the background. I am not, but if you are young, and can afford it, you will make a mistake in not discovering the charms of Chedi.

This exquisite hotel is well described at this site. It is truly a 5 star property and I won't duplicate the rave reviews. I will just add a comment or two about ambience. It is a very large property with a small amount of guests. I cannot judge all their guests, but the ones that were there with us were all people who wanted quiet and privacy. To the point that for 4 days we did not have a conversation with anyone, but each other. The dining room is quiet, like a temple. Guests speak in hushed tones. Our only thumbs down would be that we would have liked to chat over a glass of wine other people after or before dinner. The Swiss manager was outgoing, you can get a conversation out of him, but we only saw him once. The place runs smoothly and invisibly. There is no "front desk" but a beautiful, empty, welcome pavilion where you can go sit and miraculously, a staff member will materialize and very quickly comply with your request.

If you are a photographer, you will be busy for hours in the gardens and multiple lily pond pools, fountains and swan lake. Ask your butler for a golf cart tour and history of the property. Speaking of the butler, our lady butler was a delightful lady and an immaculate cleaner, indoors and in the pool and private garden area. Not a leaf dared to be in the wrong place!

However, their laundry policy of having clothes in by 10 and back to you by 5 is unrealistic since they dry the clothes outside and it is a very warm and humid climate with frequent, short showers. They made every effort to compIy, but I would have preferred a small laundry line inside where my underwear and special travel clothing could have simply dried over night in the large bath area of the well air conditioned room.

I took the yoga class once and would encourage a student of any ability to attend this. The location overlooking the rice paddy and the charming instructor were worth getting up a little early for.

Room Tip: You will do some walking here. If you have walking issues let them know to give you a room as close...

Dear Guest,

We were happy to read your review and wanted to thank you for the comments and your feedback. You're absolutely right in that some rooms do not have adequate hanging space for laundry and swimwear, and we're going to look at adding a line or an extra rail for that.

I have passed your comments on to our butler team and thank you for complimenting their service.

We hope to welcome you back to our property soon.

Kind regards

My vacations normally are a choice between a beach or the history and culinary delights of Europe.
It was such a shock then to find a place that met so many other needs.
We had booked in for only 3 nights, unlike many of your other reviewers who seem to stay for longer - if only I had taken better notice of their comments.
Just waking up each morning, having an early morning swim in the villa's own small pool and watching the workers tending to their rice fields and ducks was absolute heaven.
We made the mistake one afternoon of leaving the villa to look at Ubud and the Monkey Forest.
Ubud was every person's worst nightmare - just like a huge shopping alley with millions looking for the "real" Ubud - not sure that they found it.
Apparently since the book and film "Eat Pray Love", millions are doing this must trip - locals though now seem to call it "eat pay leave"
Couldn't wait to get back to Chedi Club - relaxing peaceful and no need to go looking for other outside restaurants - the food was wonderful - high quality and wonderful service.

Room Tip: Ask for a villa with a pool - worth the extra

We have just returned from 9 night at the Chedi. Every moment of our holiday from the banana fritters on arrival to the escorted check in through to immigration on departure were perfect (this is worth the extra charge as it made arrival and departure so easy especially after the long journey to get there).

The hotel is stunning and you really get a feel for the local culture through the décor and the fact that you can watch local rice farmers going about their work from your villa. Of all the 5 star hotels we have visited this was the most stunning and the most memorable for the overall experience of staying here.

We stayed in villa 9 and the views were wonderful. The villa layout is spacious and despite some mixed weather the private pool was well used. The indoor/outdoor bathtub was great and we had no problems with mosquitoes at all. The complementary laundry service meant we could have taken half the clothes we did and everything was returned the same day. The service is so personal and professional that our room was cleaned every day while we were at morning yoga and breakfast and all the staff knew our names after a day and remembered our orders. The staff all go the extra mile to anticipate your needs, our butler Supri was excellent.

We enjoyed late afternoon tea, of Asian style rice cakes, and the evening cocktails with canapés in the restaurant. The views of the sun setting and watching the farmers attend to the rice paddies was such a unique experience and really unforgettable.

We ate in our villa all but one night. The restaurant tended to get a bit bug filled once the sunset so we were more comfortable eating in the room. The standard of food was excellent although the menu very limited choice wise for 9 nights. We would have liked more local options to experience a bit more variety.

The complementary shuttle into Ubud was great and we were given a phone to use to call when we were ready to collect, this as with everything else about the service at the Chedi made life very easy.

We will definitely go back and having had a quick look at the sister hotel The Legian on the drive to the airport we would stay only at the Chedi as it is on another level.

Room Tip: Villa 9 was in a stunning setting.
