Alam Jiwa, is far and away the most amazing place we have ever stayed. Ever. Out of everywhere we have visited in the world, out of the wonderfully sweet places we've stayed, this beats them all. Our room was only $85/night (we stayed in the room called gelatik), and it included a giant breakfast, afternoon tea, and free taxi service anywhere we wished to go, any time we wished to go. The welcome drink was a delicious smoothie of fresh tropical fruit, easily the best we've ever had. And now, our room. We walked through a wonderful gate, down some stairs, past drooping flowers, over fish ponds, to our giant double doors. Inside, an enormous room, a giant bathroom and a beautiful veranda hanging over a rushing stream, and facing a rice field.

Breakfast on our veranda each morning . . . how many more ways can I say amazing? Two men delivered breakfast to our room, carrying two giant trays of food. Banana crepes (mine with lemon and honey, hers with coconut and brown sugar), fresh fruit, dark Balinese coffee, croissants, the sound of the river below and a breeze drifting through the flowers and trees all around us. We had landed in paradise and never wanted to leave.

When we arrived, we had a reservation for two nights only. We'd decided to come here and then figure out the rest of our 9-day Bali stay, but after seeing the place we just wanted to stay here the whole time. We went to the reception desk to see if we could extend our reservation here. WELL.

The man we spoke to was older, in traditional dress with a head wrap and kamben (erroneously called a sarong), and when we explained what he wanted he pulled out a giant and complicated booking log and figured it all out for us. He was adorable, laughing easily and so smart and quick. When we were leaving for dinner, he was sitting on the steps playing a harmonica. He told us that people at a nearby property heard him playing Oh Susannah and ran over to him and gave him $100 to buy a new and better harmonica, because his was from China.

We cannot recommend this little hotel enough. Of the Alam properties in Ubud, it's by far the best -- the rooms, the staff, the food, the pool.

Stayed here in the Jalak Bali room for 5 nights in September. Wow! Room was spacious, clean and comfy with a veranda with beautiful views over the rice fields. Watching the fire flies in the rice fields at night was a highlight. Hotel itself has beautiful grounds with lots of running water and is looked after really well by the staff. Location is excellent with the monkey forest (a pointless tourist trap but necessary to go through or round to get to central ubud) only a short walk away.
Best thing about this place though was the staff. Can't speak highly enough of them, all were friendly and so helpful, not just during our stay but also looking after bags while we travelled for a week to komodo and also with arranging drivers for us upon returning to Bali. Really can't wait to go back soon and thank you for such a great stay.

We started staying at Alam Jiwa some ten years ago. Since then we have come back many times.

We have been fortunate enough to stay at loads of hotels in different places but nothing compares to Alam Jiwa.

Back in the old days you could simply drive by and find a room. Now the only problem is that you will have a really hard time booking this magical place.

Unless you are planning your trip way ahead of when you are going they will not be able to help. Most likely they will recommend one of the other Alam hotels - they are all good but only one is magic...

Room Tip: All the rooms are great and have really nice rice paddy views.

The pleasant staff were extremely efficient during our stay. Booking restaurants and activities and providing free transfers within Ubud was all part of the service. All requests were handled accurately and punctually. The room was tastefully decorated in traditional balinese style with a large daybed , lounge and table on the outdoor balcony. A beautiful setting overlooking the breathtaking green fields and the immaculate landscape surrounds, this is peace and serenity at its best. The sounds of running water from the creek and tiered ponds lull you to sleep. The traditional breakfast options are delicious. Would highly recommend visiting Ubud and staying at this lovely hotel.

Our days in Alam Jiwa were a real pleasure. The rooms are wonderful and very spacious with a fantastic view on the rice fields. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, the breakfast (served on our terrace) very god and the overall atmosphere was simply great - true, authentic Bali at its very best.

It is located not directly in Ubud, so it takes about 15 minutes by the free transport service to go to the town center (or you walk in 20 minutes through the Monkey Forrest - good during the day).

If you come to Ubud, Alam Jiwa is definitely a fantastic place to stay!
