Just got back from visiting Bali for the first time and I had to send a quick note to my people at the Rice Jogloo located in Ubud. As this place came highly recommended from a friend who had previously visited, my expectations going in where very high. Let me be the first to tell you that our expectations were met and exceeded. From the surrounding rice fields that provide unreal views and a sense of calm, to the staff, this place is a MUST VISIT.
Kristen the owner was very helpful in answering any and all questions. Sanu, the point man on location is an incredible host and knows how to make the experience whatever it is you need it to be.
I will definitely be going back. Thank you again to the Rice Jogloo and their staff for providing a once and a life time experience.
We stayed 4 nights at the 'Agung Suite' with our two teenage daughters and all the 4 of us enjoyed it SO much.
The location is absolutely divine - out in the middle of the beautiful rice fields of Ubud. You cannot drive there with a car, so it's completely quiet and the only sounds are from the animals (and a little bit all the scooters passing through). You walk at a little, beautiful and very scenic route to Ubud. The one way takes you to the center of Ubud in only 15 minutes and there's plenty of small, cosy cafes, shops, yoga places and spa/massage places on the way. If you walk the longer way it'll probably take around 45 minute, but it's so much worth it because the scenery is absolutely beautiful and 'jungle-like'.
THE RICE JOGLO:
Extremely friendly people with there and they do everything with a warm smile and patience. The houses are SO beautifully decorated that you just want to buy all the same things for your own home!
The breakfast which is included is simple, yet very tasteful and nice. You get banana/coconut pancakes (very yummy), toasted bread, homemade jam, fresh fruit, freshly laid duck eggs any style and Balinese coffee. Throughout the day you can drink coffee, tea, and water. And the small outdoor kitchen is open for you to use as well if you feel like it during the day.
There is a small pool (quite cold) that especially our daughters enjoyed after a long day in Ubud (so many beautiful things to buy at the market, where bargaining is so much fun - from our experience yhe starting price is about double (or even less) than the final price.
Little things that's nice to know:
There's no hairdryer so if you need that, you probably should bring that from home. You are provided with one towel per person.
We stayed in the Ravine suite. It was outstanding. Really beautiful views from every angle. The property is situated on the Kajeng rice field walk in Ubud so tourist pass all the time. The property is so beautiful everyone stops to photograph it. The area is so peaceful and tranquil especially after the noise and number of people in the centre of Ubud. We loved our walk back every day it was a time to destress! The staff at the Rice Joglo are wonderful. They are so welcoming and helpful. We loved our stay and if we visit Ubud again we will definitely stay here!
My daughter and I were so enamored by our initial stay of 1 week at the Joglo that we returned to spend the last 5 nights of our Indonesia trip in order to complete the circle. The preceding reviews do an excellent job of recounting the multitude of things that make a stay at the Joglo worthwhile so I will not detail all of them again. Suffice it to say, that for the two of us it was a sincere connection to the lovely people (Sonu, Wayan, Made, Eva) who care for the guests and property, the fresh and delicious meals, the resident animals both domestic and wild!, the sweeping rice field views and lush gardens, the authentic feel of the Joglo rooms and the exciting "throw caution to the winds" scooter rides to and from town. The Joglo is a respite from the busyness of Ubud center and we were happy just to stay "home" as it was easy enough to eat well at the nearby restaurants/warungs along the path. Since returning to the desert US, I have been playing the video I recorded from the Ravine Suite my last night of the Joglo; nature's voluminous chorus of frogs and friends rejoicing in the rainfall. It puts me right back and softens my spirit. Love to all at the Joglo. Alice and I thank you for making our experience unforgettable. Please know that each of you lives on in our hearts.
My friend and I stayed 4 nights at The Rice Joglo but could have easily stayed longer. The Ravine Suite we stayed in was lovely, beautifully decorated with attention to detail and a wonderful view of the rice fields. I was lucky enough to have the master suite on the second floor and slept with the windows and curtains and balcony door open each night for air flow(no airconditioning needed and no mosquitoes!), waking each morning surrounded by green. It was lovely to sit on the balcony and watch the morning light creep over the fields. The outdoor bathroom looking over the jungle was the best ever! Whenever we went out we made sure we allowed time to come home and relax in the surroundings as well.
Sonu and staff were very good hosts and we had our best breakfasts in Bali there - fresh fruit and pancakes, toast with homemade jam and the best ever scrambled duck eggs with vegetables freshly picked from the garden and lots of garlic. This was all served in a lovely open air setting along with entertaining stories from Sonu.
It was the perfect escape from busy Ubud and felt a world away from it. The walk to and from the guesthouse became an enjoyable part of the day, especially when we wandered back in the evening(remember to bring a torch) listening to the frogs and spotting the fireflies. There are several good warungs within walking distance along the same little track from The Rice Joglo to Ubud. Be mentally prepared for the scooter ride in when you first arrive - it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip but caused a lot of nervous giggling at the time!
Personally, I would recommend staying at least 4 nights but would have been happy to stay for at least 4 more, spending time exploring the area and doing some activities but also allowing chill out time in such beautiful surroundings. If I'm ever back in Bali, and I hope to be, I would definitely stay again.
I have been coming to Ubud for 27 years and my stay at the Rice Joglo took me back to memories of my first visit. Located out in the middle of the rice fields was a unique experience. We were concerned about the heat and mosquitos at night but experience neither. We slept with the window wide open and were cool and not one bite. Loved falling asleep to the sounds of nature all around us.
The 20 minute walk each day on the path was always new each time, a duck crossing one day or a regally dressed up horse the next.
Sonu and staff looked after us so well and nothing was too much trouble. Mussing the coconut pancakes. Our $3 local lunch that Sonu organised was one of the best meals of the trip.
We enjoyed meals at Pomegranate and Sari Organik, both lovely.
The saty at the Rice Joglo was amazing! We loved the house so much! Also Sonu, the manager, took such a good care of us and our needs! Picking us up, explaining everything so patiently and sering a great breakfast! it made us feel really at home and wellcomed! The serrounding rice fields make it to a really peacefull place! We will definitly come again to the Rice Joglo n recomend it as the best place to stay in Ubud!
