“The perfect place to relax!”

Apart from going to yoga classes, massages and the odd restaurant, all within walking distance, we didn't leave Rice Joglo for seven days. It was so peaceful and relaxing. Sonu, the manager of Rice Joglo, asked us not to write about what we liked, but about how we thought Rice Joglo could be improved. This is difficult, because apart from providing soap and perhaps cups in the bathroom, we can't think of any improvements. If you want just to stop and relax, in a beautiful place, Rice Joglo is the place to go. And incidentally, if you like to cook, Sonu has some terrific recipes, especially for vegies from Rice Joglo's organic garden.

“Just like paradise!”
Reviewed August 24, 2014 for a stay in August 2014

The Rice Joglo is one of the most beautiful places where I have ever stayed. It’s situated in the middle of the rice fields and therefore you can escape from the hectic and busy Ubud if you feel you need some time off in the nature. But you are also just a 15 minutes walk away from Ubud centre. The Rice Joglo is a very special place because everything there is built with antique wood and chosen with a lot of love. The whole building, the furniture, the blankets, the bathroom, the swimming pool area, the Buddhas.... everything is just very tastefully chosen. You feel like if you are in paradise. You could just easily spend a couple of days there with not leaving the place at all because there is nothing missing!
In the mornings Sonu, the estates manager, will make you the best Chai tea I have ever drunk. He is a very kind and reliable person - always there if you need his help - and very good at what he is doing.
For breakfast you can eat fresh duck eggs from the ducks that live there. There is also an organic garden where you can pick some delicious vegetables or just ask Made the gardener to do it for you. If you need anything you can ask Sonu, Made or Ketut any time and they will try to make everything possible for you. They are all really lovely people with an open heart and they have always a smile for you.
I can only say „Thank you“ for having been able to stay here. It was hard for me to leave this wonderful place because I just loved being there. I can highly recommend this place and if I possibly can I will definitely come back!

It is a 20 minute walk from the hustle and bustle or a motorbike ride and that's one of many things that makes this place so special. It looks as good as it really is.If you can book it, do it as places like this are very rare

“Just book it and enjoy. The BEST place to stay.”

We spent 3 weeks travelling in Bali and our stay at the Rice Joglo was one of the highlights of our trip. The Joglo is situated amongst tranquil ricefields and is a far cry from the frenetic pace of Ubud even though you are just a short walk from anything that you need. You wake in the morning to the sounds of ducks and trickling streams of water that run between the fields. The Joglo itself is a wonderful place to stay and easily accommodated us and our 4 teenage children. The upstairs bedroom has a balcony with beautiful views, the bathrooms are fantastic examples of the "outdoor" Balinese bathrooms and the outdoor kitchen is the perfect place for your breakfast of freshly cooked duck eggs. But the true stars of the Joglo are Made and Ketut. These 2 wonderful people will ensure that your stay at the Joglo is the most authentic interaction that you will have with the locals. They not only want to help you, they want to make sure that you are happy and that you are enjoying yourself. Spend some time with Made in his vegetable garden and you will realise that a common language is not that necessary to connect people, you just need a sense of smell, taste and Made's smile. The effect that Made and Ketut had on my teenage children was such that for the rest of the trip they all commented on how much they missed them both. Kristine and Sonu have a wonderful place in the Joglo and I couldn't recommend it more highly. Just book it, enjoy and don't rush to leave.

“Highlight of our entire Bali trip!”

After all the amazing things we did and saw in Bali, what does our family talk about the most when we reminisce about our trip? The Joglo. The memories we have from the time we spent there are something we will never forget. There was something magical (I know a lot of other reviewers have used this word already, but truly it's the only way to explain it) about the experience of staying in a place that was so remote and unlike anything we could ever experience here back in the U.S. Being in the rice fields we felt like we were truly experiencing Bali. You should know that there is no car access on the 20-30 min footpath through the rice fields to get to the joglo. I wish I had packed a lighter suitcase as I felt badly watching Ketut (the house manager) trying to balance my huge luggage on his motorcycle! But he did it with ease and, like all Balinese, with patience. Ketut and Made (the gardener) picked us up on their motorbikes to take us to the joglo and were always very eager to pick us up whenever we wanted a ride to the main street, although I much preferred to walk the trail as it was so beautiful with streams on either side and I wanted to take it all in. And a couple of days we didn't even want to stray from the rice fields. It was incredible to be able to walk from the joglo 10 min down the path for sunrise yoga at Ubud Yoga House (such a highlight) then breakfast at Sari Organik, spa treatments at Cantika Spa, watch the sunset at Pomegranate for dinner, then watch the fireflies and listen to the water fountains below the balcony of the joglo. We were grateful for the perfect wifi connection and DVD player, but mostly we sat on the balcony at night talking and connecting as a family, which is something we rarely do at home with our teenagers. The bedrooms are beautiful and I was worried about there being no AC, but the fans worked great and I even needed an extra blanket at night. The new pool was perfect for taking a dip on a hot afternoon. One word of caution is the upstairs bedroom has very steep steps which you need to climb down to get to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Also the second bedroom has a separate entrance which meant our kids had to lock themselves in at night. This wasn't too much of a problem for us as our kids are teenagers and could be a plus if you are two separate couples and want privacy. The main floor below the master bedroom does have a bed if you need to be connected to a small child. Ketut and Made are so friendly and I miss them dearly. Made would come in the morning and show me how to make herbal shakes from the huge organic garden in front of the joglo. He also brought my son a cake for his birthday, and Ketut took us to his family's village for a ceremony. They both went above and beyond and Made would constantly say "Made make you happy?" always with a smile. These men truly gave me the best memories, whereas my husband at times wished they weren't quite so attentive as sometimes he just wanted to relax in the middle of the day and felt he couldn't because Made was always around trying to please us. But in my eyes, they were incredible people and showed us an authentic part of Bali that we wouldn't have experienced had we stayed in a hotel. Being back home, all I can think about is the day I can return to the Joglo. Thank you Kristine for sharing such a beautiful place with us.
