Should have known when the sign said cheapest eats in Ubud that it might be a bit average, I certainly wasn't expecting gourmet.
Whilst yes the food was cheap it was less than average. On arriving my husband used the bathroom and came back looking very worried, in his words it was 'filthy' and after seeing that he decided to try and order something as innocuous as possible from the menu, His choice a cheese sandwich. I decided on a plate of sweet potato fries.
It was early afternoon so there were only two other groups of people in the place, plenty of what seemed to be staff, who were just looking bored and disinterested.
Eventually we managed to attract someones attention and place our orders.
The beer at least was cold, but that's where the positives end. My husbands cheese sandwich was just a bit of processed cheddar on some dry white bread with the crusts cut off, it did at least arrive reasonably quickly (around 10 minutes or so).
eventually my sweet potato fries arrived, after around 45 minutes, and I would have to use the term fries loosely, while they at least seemed to be cooked through they were hardly what we would call fried - fries conjures up an image of crisp and golden, not limp and white.
Anyway the only positive was yes it was cheap, however most things in Bali are cheap and I would rather pay the equivalent of a dollar or two more and get something edible.
Given that there were only three tables of customers at the time and the lack of service I would hate to imagine what its like at dinner time when the pace always seems to be full.
I would definitely not recommend this to anyone ever!

We have come back three times for lunch during our week in Ubud. Food very tasty and cheap. Recommend the nasi campur, gado gado, fried chicken especially, and the tempe. The place is old, but the peace being above street level makes this place a 'must do'. Bintangs cheap and no tax added on. Very friendly staff too.

We saw this place during the day, and thought it looks nice and romantic so we went home to change and shower with the intentions to head back there later.

We head back and the place looked slight well used for the lack of a better expression. We thought let's stick to our guns and stay. We ordered the rice wine which wasn't as strong as suggested i.e. watered down. If you like Uncle Ben's sauce order the Balinese grilled chicken but you better hope it is cooked because I was concerned about mine so didn't finish it. The Nasir campur was not overwhelming and did not have the usual trimmings.

The lighting topped it off as the they did not have lamp shades to create a romantic atmosphere but A4 sheets of paper stapled around the light to create 'mood lighting.' Romantic? You decide. Also check the toilets as the erotic art work is to die for.

However it is cheap, friendly and in a good location but would not eat there again. If you are on a budget give it a go as the menu has quite a few different options. In the end It is not trying to be anything else but place to eat. You get what you pay for with this place and the family is nice.

We noticed this place because of their sign outside, which had super cheap prices & a vegetarian section on the menu. The owner was very funny & friendly. We enjoyed the food so much. We had the best tempe in Bali & their arak & rice wine drink was strong, delicious & cheap at 17500rps! We enjoyed it so much, that we returned 3 more times, one time with 2 travellers we met in Ubud, for drinks. We drinked them out of arak that night! I never thought that coconut & spinach would be a winning combination, but it is! & tempe with tomato sauce...wow! Bali is already cheap, but I just couldn't get over the even cheaper prices for such great, authentic Balinese food. & cheap alcoholic drinks makes for a top 10 restaurant experience. & if you sit near the street, it's fun to people watch as well. Highly recommended!
