Not as a great as it seems but knowing that you're dining for a good course somehow makes it easier for you forgive their shortcoming. Went for lunch and wanted to try their very much lauded curry only to be told that they were out of coconut milk. Switched my order to chicken but was told that the poultry have not arrived. Rather dissapointing to begin a meal with! So in the end, we settled for the prawn, which was delicious and tasted very much like home cooked food. The fish was however, only mediocre and borderlined to being overcook. All in all, food tasted alright... i wouldnt say great but coming from a Warung, the meal presentation was good and they deserve a praise for that.

I'm disappointed by some of the recent negative reviews as these reviewers obviously never read any of the literature detailing their cause .
When we went for lunch we were told that our chef on the day was a 18yr old single mother and what fantastic local fare she made on our visit....so tasty and fresh.
We ate in one of the bale huts with was private and very cool.
After our meals we were met by one of the founders Alex who took time to go around and meet all of his patrons and explain what they are trying to achieve - set up medical clinics for locals who wouldn't normally be able to afford medical care.
There is a funky juice bar downstairs and you only pay how much you feel they are worth.
The food here is tasty , inexpensive and helping the local people - take time out for a visit , try some great food , meet some great people and support a great project !

After reading the ranking #1 of Tripadvisor.com I made an appointment at this restaurant for lunch and reached there recently. First of all it does not have a proper building and it is uncomfortable to climb the deep steps (9-10 inches) which were also wet. We had one elderly person who was barely able to climb to the 1st floor where the restaurant is located. When we reached there we did not find any comfortable chairs or table, they were bare wooden benches and tables cramped so tightly together that if you move your arm it will touch the person at the next table. There was some sitting arrangement on the floor of a deck which is not comfortable for older people.
The place had an open kitchen right next to the dining tables and the place was smoky and stinking of fish and spices and I had serious doubts about the good hygiene practices that a restaurant should follow. The noise of cooking, the cooks and waitresses talking loudly and the smell of fish and the unclean atmosphere made the place like a fish market.
We sat down for a while and looked at the menu for a couple of minutes and got so uncomfortable in that environment that we left the place and had our lunch in another place nearby.
I have been a reviewer on Tripadvisor for some time and I think ranking this place as the best restaurant in Ubud places its own credibility at stake. This place need to be re classified as a below average eating places. I have been to Ubud twice and had my food in at 6-7 restaurants. All the others had much better infrastructure, were really comfortable and the food was good. But this one was so bad that we could not even sit there.

Hello dear friends,

This is not a restaurant, but a Warung. And it's a Balinese Warung with Balinese tables... We call it "Bale"... Everyone i welcoming to share a table, share words and learn each others!

The kids build this place by themselves only! I'm just a simple Nurse, 100% volunteer by the way!

One day, i said to two teenegers: "Please, do you want do do something for your life?" They answer yes... I gave them few money and they build slowly by slowly, the Fair Warung Balé! At the beginning, it was only a place for "local" food. 5'000, to 10'000 Idr per meal... Few drinks as well. Then we open the new clinic downstairs! Our Clinic mobile too...
Now, it move to an other place, much bigger where we welcome more than 30'000 patients per year.

People love to seat as Balinese people coz we are in Bali! They also love to share together and they really enjoy to see what the kids are able to do... This open kitchen is the most beautiful things in the world, coz everyone can see these kids working, to have the opportunity to build a different future... Yes, from the shadow to the light! Can you imagine such a beautiful story?

Usually, everyone likes to feel good smells of kitchens... Everything is so fresh, the fish caught during the night, are delivered every morning! Nothing is fake, all review are real and 100% honest!. People are sensitive to what we are doing to help others.

There are also three webcams who's retransmit all live on several media, including two in huge US newspaper... This is an beautiful experience. What we do is I think unique. Founds medical centres who's give free health care, while employing inexperienced and disadvantaged young people!

So, for me your review is terrible coz it's kill us! We do everything with our heart, with few moneys! And you don't try to eat with us! I swear, the food at the Fair Warung Balé, is probably the most generous food all around Bali... And it's so helpful food, so Fair, big portion and so cheap as well! We don't use any MSG, we work with local farmer, we pick-up all our fruits, vegetables by ourselves. Vegetarian food also! 100% indonesian, made by Indonesians, for Indonesian people.

I'm Alex and i'm in Switzerland for few weeks! I'm travelling abroad to find ways to develop a major new health project in Indonesia. Our first free Hospital will be located in Karangasem (East part of the Island).

So... A poor review for this? Why? I really want to know why dear friend! You event don't eat with us! So why? Your words are too hard, they hurt us in our cause. I'm personally very sad, I can not sleep and has youth mourned with sadness when they read your review!

Thank you for your attention and May God bless you, with all you family!

We ordered the prawns and the fish curry. The fish curry was very tasty, the prawns were a little bland but everything was very fresh.

Undoubtedly, Fair Warung Bale has provided us with two fantastic meals. We booked - as advised on TA by previous reviewers (thanks for that advice folks - really came in handy!).
THe first meal was on a Saturday and as the place was busy +++, we were invited to share a table. Normally this wouldn't be something we would do, but we're so glad that we did. The couple we sat beside were from Switzerland and Lebanon. Great conversation started, whilst we were aware that the atmosphere was starting to build.
The local music - songs on request - started, and we had the chicken with cashew nuts and thai chicken curry with basil. Both were fab. By this time we were joined by two Germans - getting crowded - but nobody cared. Then we were joined by two Italians.
One of the best meals of our married life, was had. (We've been married for almost 25 years). OK the menu is limited, OK the musicians weren't professionals, OK the place was crowded - but what a night.
Add to this, the history of this place and the good cause it supports and we were blown away.
Thank you for a memorable night.
We then went back on the Monday (closed Sunday) aware that no live music and that it would be different people and yet we were prepared to go back just for the food (recommendation in itself!).
Table booked - again - just as well - and then we saw that there were people being turned away. So we invited a group of 3 to join us at our small table, turned out 3 x great Australian ladies and then we saw another couple being turned away - so we just moved up closer and they joined us (French & Swedish couple) so there were 7 of us around a small table, and the chat and food was a good as the Saturday - our evening just flew by!
THe restaurant has probably given us 2 of the best episodes of our holiday - and one of the best meals of our lives (the other being not far behind!). It's not a Michelin Star place - avoid if that's what you're looking for, but if you're after honest, fresh food with an atmosphere to relish - then look no further......
