We loved our stay at Hotel Tjampuhan & Spa, built in 1928 and set in a simply stunning garden that drops into a beautiful river valley. The rooms are very nice, with incredible views, the included smorgasbord breakfast is awesome and the staff are all very friendly and helpful.
The bathrooms, however are in clear need of a revamp.

Tip, hire a scooter from over the road and (carefully) explore the surrounding countryside. Other highlights are Cafe Clear, Queens Tandoor , a little warung 2 kms up the hill with a beautiful front garden & the best chilli tempeh in the world, and the drive out to the elephant safari park on scooters... Namaste...

Room Tip: Book online for half the price of a walk up booking & the Spa prices are exorbitant (go over the...

last stayed here 10 years ago and not much has changed. I came back with my husband and kids and expected to stay in a similar room as requested with a large balcony. Perhaps for logistic purposes, this was not to be the case and we were positioned in Pura, comfortable enough rooms but small balconies. The pool is ever magical and welcome relief after a hot day walking around
Gripe: everywhere we went we were approached by staff to do something on the side ( a trip or visit or walk elsewhere) and not to tell hotel reception and when we refused, the mood became a bit threatening/ ugly.
also on leaving, suddenly everyone is your friend until you walk past them and do not tip them, including the security guys! I would suggest a prominent central tip box so that guests do not feel harassed.
That aside, the hotel is still a hidden gem and the rooms are quiet and comfortable ( bed is a bit hard though but bathrooms clean and adequate) and the breakfast good. The location is wonderful, just off the beaten track and within easy walking distance of main Ubud and the shops.
Some great eateries just outside the hotel too.

My family loved our "way too short" stay here (husband and three children... 19, 17 and 13). What a beautiful, peaceful, serene place to stay. Our only regret... only booked for 2 nights!! For the price, very good hotel. Great staff, some villas have nice views. The setting is very charming, the pool is very nice. Rooms are fairly sized and well decorated.

Breakfast was very good, buffet in the restaurant. Location is good, you can go downtown by walk, 5-15-30 minutes depending on where you want to go. Blanco museum just at the bottom of the hill.

Cons : I could say the internet in the lobby only. I think that in-room wi-fi should be standard for any hotel in this price range.

I would give this place a 4 stars rating, because of the internet in the lobby only. For the price (100$ all taxes included), it is a very nice place. We stayed later in a more luxurious resort that was further from the city and frankly it was not worth the price difference.

Room Tip: Near the lobby for internet access Higher ground for a nice view

My partner and I stayed at Hotel Tjampuhan & Spa at the end of September and had really relaxing time.

Pros -
* gorgeous setting - the tranquility of the trees and river create a serene environment
* sitting by the pool is very quiet, again you can hear the river.
* spa treatments - I recommend the partner treatment that includes a massage, body scrub, yoghurt and flower bath. (Note: if you are self conscious I'd probably just stick with a massage) I seriously felt like I was floating afterwards.
* not having a tv or internet connection in the room...forces you to switch off
(Close to Bridges - a really nice restaurant...expensive for Bali but worth it)

Cons
* avoid rooms by the road as you can hear motorbikes and cars which takes away from the serenity (We were in Puri 1)
* air con can sometimes leak (not a big deal...you just can't leave valuables underneath)

YES there are loads of steps, but it's not something to dwell if you are reasonably fit. The beauty of the hotel makes up for it.

Staff were absolutely gorgeous, rooms were lovely, quaint, and traditional. It's so lovely to stay in a resort where you feel the "real" bali style. The morning view, when you draw the curtains, is so breathtaking. Just a short stroll to restaurants and shopping. I cannot wait to stay here again, only next time I will be booking for much longer. Thank you Hotel Tjampuhan xx

Room Tip: We stayed in Agung rooms (deluxe) and were very happy with the location

First trip to Bali as a family (2 girls 10 and 5 years), and this hotel was gorgeous! You enter what looks like a hole in the wall from the street and are transported to another world of green overhanging trees above the river. We were lucky to get a large room only a couple of levels down from reception, negotiated a better price than listed on the website, and ended up in one of the refurbished rooms which was spacious and airy, felt completely luxurious, with a wonderfully large balcony from which to enjoy the view and activities across the river. Some mod cons - a bar fridge for instance. Tea and coffee making facilities were not available because the hotel had run out of kettles, which was odd but not a drama. We loved the history of this place, the rambling gardens and proximity to central Ubud. Gorgeous to be able to walk into town and walk back, or take the shuttle bus if its schedule coincided with ours. Equally gorgeous to be a little removed from the centre so we could enjoy the peacefulness! We also discovered - alas on our last day!- that we were also perfectly located to wander over to nearby villages like Peliatan, and rice fields. Found a terrific and cheap laundry nearby (the hotel laundry is ridiculously expensive) as well as terrific warungs. Staff were variable in their desire to assist which struck us as odd for Bali, but overall pleasant.

We ate in the hotel restaurant quite often during our stay, and as other reviewers have experienced, we too came down with severe gastro that put 3 of us out of action for 2 fairly unpleasant days. I will never forget the complete outrage of the 5 year old when she just could not stop heaving - hilarious in retrospect! The one remaining member of the family reported back that 3 other families at the hotel had also come down with gastro at the same time, and this was a recurring theme for the rest of our 6 night stay. Probably best to avoid the restaurant - there are plenty of options nearby to fit all tastes and budgets. Likewise the spa - it looks mysteriously gorgeous, but was comparatively expensive and not remotely sublime.

Despite those negatives, I would stay here again but definitely only if we were on the upper levels and in a refurbished, comfortable room.

Room Tip: Rooms on upper levels nearer the reception area that have been refurbished will be gorgeous.
