I was recently in Bali with a couple of friends, we organised several activities for the duration of our stay - quad biking, volcano climbing, but canyoning was the easy winner.
Unfortunately 2 out of our group of 4 had been struck down by Bali belly and had to cancel last minute - they were not charged. This brought our tour group to a grand total of 2, plus our 2 guides Pii and Angar (no idea how to spell your names - sorry guys!).
It was a bit of a drive from Ubud, probably an hour and a half there and closer to 3 hours back on account of the Bali traffic. Definitely allow a full day for this one. Adventure and Spirit organised the transfer and our driver was an amenable fellow who was up for a chat, and stopped on the way home to buy us rambutans.
I was a little apprehensive as to the safety standards one would find in a place like Bali, but my fears were allayed upon arrival. The gear was new, branded and comprehensive - they provide everything: boots, harness, helmet, gloves, wetsuits, even wetsuit socks. The guides were well trained and professional.
Once in the canyon we had a blast. There was much whooping and hollering whilst abseiling off waterfalls and jumping off high rocks into deep pools. Pii and Angar brought a great energy to the experience - you can tell these guys genuinely enjoy their job, and their enthusiasm is infectious. The canyon itself took us about 3.5 hours (probably longer if you had a bigger group) then we lunched back at a base.
My only regret was that because we were there in the wet season we only had the one canyon available to us. Had there been more options I would have been back there the next day for another adventure!
