“A great place to stay in Ubud”
Reviewed January 18, 2014

We can definitely recommended Sandat Bali homestay, as it is great value, good location right next to Ubud center and a chance to get to know the warmhearted local owners Mama & Papa and their whole family. We also had transports to and from Ubud arranged by Sandat Bali, and it was very convenient and pleasant. We only stayed for 2 nights, but would have liked to stay longer (but we had to leave Ubud). They are currently expanding and building more rooms, an office and a breakfast room; let's hope anyway that the cozy homestay feel stays the same!

We stayed at Sandat Bali for 8 nights. We had booked for 4 nights, but we kept extending our stay in this lovely place with 'just one more day', because we really just did not want to leave.

Sandat Bali is run by the sweetest people we ever met, who introduce themselves as Mama and Papa. They also live on the property in a modest home next to the hotel. Their son Wayan also helps out around the homestay, he is a very honest and friendly guy with a lot of experience in the hotel business, since he has worked on a cruise ship for 7 years.

Mama and Papa immediately consider you as a part of their family and treat you likewise. Mama has a big warm heart and a lot of connections, she can arrange anything for you. She invited us to join her for a special day of offerings which she was participating in with her local community, and so we were able to have an authentic experience, being dressed up by Mama in traditional Balinese clothing, visiting three different temples around Kintamani with a group of all Indonesians and joining their Balinese ceremonies. Everyone brought lots of food and we had lunch with them inbetween. For this we only had to pay a part of the fuel costs for the bemo. Mama loved it and so did we.

We can't really agree with the before mentioned that Mama is constantly trying to sell you things. Yes, she will ask you many times if you maybe want to do this or that, or ask if she can help you arrange something (e.g. call taxi, buy something at the market), but this is purely because she wants to show you the good things that Ubud and Bali have to offer, and she simply does have connections everywhere so she will get you the best value for money. We rented a very decent new motorbike from her for only 50.000 IDR for the whole day. In our experience she really is not after your money, she just wants her guests to have the best possible time during their stay.

Papa is very relaxed and joyful, he is a painter and (as mentioned here before) a true healer!! We both had multiple reflexology treatments from him (for guests he doesn't charge, you can just donate an amount that seems fit to you) and he was able to cure a problem with my knees and relieve neck pain that has been bothering my boyfriend for over a year now and that several doctors at home haven't been able to diagnose. And Papa gives his treatments with so much love and patience. He really has a passion for it and excellent skill. Just amazing!!

We had the one room on the top floor and it was lovely. Spacious, super clean, two fans (but Ubud is really not that hot in December), kingsize bed, big balcony with a great sunset view and hot water shower. Couldn't ask for more. And regarding the price of 200.000 IDR per night this was really the best value for money we have had on our travels so far.

Mama and Papa have two staff, two very polite and friendly guys who are ready to assist you whenever you need. They cook great breakfast (we loved their green Balinese banana pancakes with palm sugar syrup) which comes with a fresh fruit plate. If you buy fruit from the market yourself and ask them they will add it to your fruit plate. They also clean the rooms thoroughly every single day.

They are currently building 8 new guestrooms and a big kitchen around and on top of their own home, so the place will be expanded beginning 2014. We can only hope the true homely and personal atmosphere of Sandat Bali will be preserved. It is the best place we have ever stayed, just an invaluable experience.

We stayed for 6 nights and found Sandat Bali to be excellent value. The room on the second floor was super clean, spacious and comfortable. The breakfast was really tasty and included lots of fruit. Mama, Papa and the rest of the staff were very friendly and sweet. The location is 5-10 minutes walk to the centre.
Papa's reflexology massage was truly incredible!

The only slightly disappointing aspect was that Mama was constantly trying to sell us things, which got a bit much, especially as this continued when my fiancée was quite ill.

One of the nicest homestay i've ever been. Noble, big rooms with it's own bathroom inside, balcony, nice furnitures, totally clean (Room-clearing every day), warm shower, wifi.
Possibility to ask for another Room next to Sandat Bali Homestay in case of fully booked Sandat. (Our friens were staying in Sandat's, we had our room 1 minute next door in a beautiful familiary complex with it's own temple. Think it's all the same family).
Breakfast is great, especially the green Banana Pancakes :)
It's a familiar athmosphere and many possibilities to book a tour, tickets for traditional balinese dance or transport to airport and other places. The owner are helpful and courteous.

Sandat Bali is situated near Ubud centre (5-10 minutes by walk).
100% recommendable, 100% value for less money.

I can not explain in words how wonderful, generous, selfless and kind Mama and Papa were. Making you feel at home straight away is one of their biggest attributes when arriving at Sandat Bali. They were so kind and welcoming, I could not have asked for more. I stayed down stairs in one of the smaller rooms but the bed was a King sized bed and every afternoon when I arrived home the bed was made, the room also had a bathroom with a toilet, shower and sink. Every morning breakfast was made which was lovely to wake up to. They had lovely Balinese furniture which made it seem even more beautiful and traditional. Every moment of my stay with Sandat Bali was lovely and if you are looking for an affordable, traditional Balinese home stay with lovely people then Sandat Bali is just the place you're looking for :)

Room Tip: The rooms downstairs have big traditional Balinese doors with Balinese carvings in them which means...

We had a great time with Mama and Papa on our two nights at Sandat Bali. We stayed in a room that was almost brand new, amazing for the price really! Lovely furniture, hot shower, big bed. The common eating area was a lovely spot to meet up with fellow travelers, met great people here. We felt part of the family, they were always happy to help us, feed us, laugh with us! I hope this place keeps this special feeling and doesn't become too popular as would love to go back!
So close to the main streets of Ubud, just a short walk away!
