This restaurant is a little gem in the middle of all the overpriced restaurant in Ubud. Our waitress was really friendly and talked to us while we were waiting for our food. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the leaf plate looked amazing!! Sadly it was a bit far from our hotel otherwise we probably would have dined there every day.

We came across Gula Bali quite by chance, finding ourselves free to dine out in Ubud one evening. We took a chance based on some good reviews on TripAdvisor and we were not disappointed.

Food & Drink
We ordered the Nasi Campur and another dish with prawns and steamed rice. The Nasi Campur was excellent. I am not a big fan of satay normally, but this was delicious and the dish was presented so artistically with little bowls made of leaves.

The highlight of my meal was the Dadar Gulung for dessert. Whoa! Who would have thought simple coconut ice cream with coconut crepes could taste so divine? We devoured our first dessert quickly and ordered another one quite greedily.

Service
The staff at Gula Bali was definitely the most cheerful and friendly we encountered in Ubud. We also met the happiest girl in Ubud here – one of the waitresses whose happiness and laughter was so infectious, she still manages to brighten our days even now.

Ambiance
The place is nicely lit, spacious, airy and comfortable. There are musicians playing the gamelan and other traditional instruments that lend a nice touch to the authentic Balinese cuisine offered here.

Value For Money
The food here was excellent and inexpensive. While some patrons may find the portions small, it suited us perfectly. Definitely great value for money.

Tips for Diners
Make a reservation. This place gets really crowded. We had to wait a while by the bar until we got a table.

Overall Impression
Gula Bali far outstripped every other restaurant we had been to in Ubud. I’d have liked to have dined here every day if I had the chance! If I had to pick just one restaurant in Ubud to return to, this would have to be it.

Having come straight from Sumatra where the food is very average and everything except the fruit is always fried to a crisp, we were delighted to find Gula Bali right near our Homestay. It is also close to the intersection of Monkey Forest Rd and Hanoman Rd, not too far from the Monkey Forest Sanctuary. Our favourite dish was the Grilled Chicken - a whole half a grilled chicken with rice, beautifully cooked green vegetables and some delicious sauce, for only 35,000Rp! My partner wanted to go there for lunch and dinner every day! But I said once a day was enough : ) I also recommend their Nasi Campur, a local dish with lots of little dishes all presented in their own banana leaf baskets. Yummy!

I went here with my boyfriend because it was recommended by a friend. The restaurant is fine and serves average Balinese food. The nasi goreng was average, as was the chicken noodle curry. Annoyingly, the chicken curry was first sent out with rice when it is called chicken noodle curry...it was changed quite quickly though.
Note that the average food should be balanced with the ridiculously low prices. A main meal for 2 with 2 soft drinks cost 90,000 Rupiah! This was good value even if the food wasn't amazing.
A good cheap meal

Walking past we had no choice in paying a visit. We were hypnotised by the traditional music. Myself and my girlfriend barely agreed on the matter, we just found ourselves walking in until we were sat down at a table. And I'm glad we were hypnotised. The shock of leaving the rest of Southeast Asia and arriving at Bali had hit our wallets hard. But what a relief, wallet friendly prices again. It's so cheap here compared to the rest of Ubud.

Don't for one second think that the price is reflected in the quality of the food because it isn't. The food is top quality Indonesian food. Lots of taste and different flavours. A great menu. You will be greeted by a waitress with a complementary, small local drink it will either make you screw your face up in disgust or catch you off gaurd at the totally different flavour but either way it will be an authentic experience.

Staff are super friendly. Food is top. Prices are more than reasonable. Give some of the abundant swanky, glitzy bistros and cafes a miss for one night (or two?) and come here. You definately won't be disappointed.
