“GREAT STAY”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

We spent 5 nights here and I was so pleased I did. Our room was on the top floor so it was like a tree house, very private and beautiful garden views. Breakfast was brought to the balcony each day, eggs, fruit, toast, coffee and fruit juice - all very good. The pool Villa looks very nice and reviews of this have been good, but I was more than happy with my upstairs room. The large pool area is beautiful, and with only 3 rooms sharing, is like your own. Walking distance to the centre of Ubud is about 15-20 minutes, I will definitely be back.

A very beautiful, serene "hotel" surrounded by bana trees and other tropical plants. The staff was very friendly and helpfull. I'd wished I had stayed longer than the 3 nights. Restaurants, bars and shops in the busy mainstreet were on a 300 meters distance from this hotel. I certainly will go back again. Breakfast is served on your balcony or terrace. The only thing that was not quite alright was the showerhead, but who gives a ....!

This is the best place to stay in Ubud. The hotel is comprised of only 4 rooms on a size able garden which is constantly in bloom.
There is a pool villa, but if you're not booked into this suite, no worries...the regular rooms enjoy a two layered swimming pool which opens up into the jungle. We had the pool to ourselves everyday.
We enjoyed the short walk into Ubud center and loved the sounds of the forest all around us.
Made and Wayan made our stay very comfortable. They are lovely people.
We will be back for sure!

The 2 bedroom villa was great for our family. The garden setting is beautiful. A very peaceful and private setting. The swimming pools were a big hit with our 6 and 8 year old. Very attentive staff. Breakfast was always pleasant. A short walk to the centre of Ubud makes this a great place to stay. We were pleased with the email communications prior to our arrival also.

Room Tip: The upstairs room in the 2 bdrm villa was lighter and more spacious than the downstairs. Only 1 shar...

Don’t be perturbed by your initial impressions of this place- the front is undergoing some renovations and my first thought was that we were entering some sort of terrible concrete soulless place. BOY was I wrong. We stayed in the private villa, one of the most charming and gorgeous places I have ever stayed in. Open the wooden doors to be greeted by a huge (for two people) pool with water features and statues surrounding, and if you haven’t already jumped in head to the amazing bedroom to be even more impressed. I will break my review down so that it doesn’t seem that I am spouting too much (well deserved) praise
.
Garden/pool: Open the traditional wooden doors and step over the daily offerings into a private sanctuary, with enough shade and sun to satisfy both the tanner and the burner. Two comfy pool chairs under a big umbrella. The outdoor kitchen has a stovetop, big fridage and sink and is more than enough if you wanted to cook. Two fluffy big nice pool towels and even a portable clothes hanger are provided. There is an outdoor shower, and plenty of room to romp around.

Bedroom/bathroom: The bedroom is huge, and watch out for the king size bed- if you happen to kneel down on it to reach for something, there’s a good chance you will wake up half an hour later, having fallen for its insanely comfortable charms. The TV is adequate, the aircon is chilly- butlaze by you won’t need it in this airy, light filled house. The bathroom is deceptively large- I don’t think the photos do it justice- that spa bath could fit three comfortably. Shower hasn’t got the best of pressure but who cares when you are just going to jump in the pool anyway?

The only downside (and I am scraping the barrel for this one) is that the house is so well equipped it is easy to forget that you are not in a hotel but infact a cottage- this means no phone calls to reception for poolside drinks, no restaurant to order a lazy meal by, and no waiters at your beck and call. So if you are looking for cocktails and cool face towels, this is not the place. However if you are looking for a private sanctuary to watch the birds frolick in the pool along with the butterflies and dragonflies while you laze on your sunbed sipping some mango juice (store bought oh no!) then this is an absolute gem.

Room Tip: Choose the private villa for a real experience

When you are just about to enter the villa...you really doubt your decision ... very far away from airport (2 hrs drive), in a dark street at night, you check-in and you are lead to a compound which gives the first impression of high walls and a small door. But, open the door and step inside, you transition from doubt to bliss.

On the left, an amazingly beautiful blue and lit-up gently gushing dreamy pool. On your right, a wood paneled door backed up with glass. Front, an open kitchen that indeed looks beautiful and inviting for a warm meal in nature. Though you don't see a lot beyond this in night, you can indeed feel the scent of Plumeria welcoming you. Enter the room, minimal neat furniture and lot of space. Quite OK - does not break the harmony of the place. You wonder what makes you feel the space and you look around - the tropical wooden roof contributes a lot to it. And the windows - big - yet open out to see the compound wall through a plant. So, it feels like open yet private. On your left is a beautiful small Balinese wooden door which appears like opening to a cupboard/wardrobe. But, it actually opens up to a large spacious bathroom – plus - storage. A Balinese wood trunk seat against a large window and a wooden wardrobe to you right side. Facing you a decent (not excellent and later we found a bit smelly) shower space. On you diagonal left, a large quarter-circular bath tub, calling you immediately and a large washbasin panel on the left wall behind you. Even with everything around, a lot of space. Everywhere, you still smell that plumeria fragrance. Unload your stuff, soak you feel for a while - sitting on the stairs leading to the pool - talk a bit - and go to sleep. The rhythm of water as lullaby and the blue water surface shimmering through the door to sweet dreams.

Wake up to a knock for a decent and sufficient breakfast. As you walk out of the bedroom door, you realized the beauty hidden away in the night - beautiful flowering plants all around you, high walls so that you do not realize that there is a world outside and neither does the world realize that you are inside, still a lot of space, greenery, water, wood, and enough life (frogs croaking, crickets in the evening, a beautiful kind of lizard, ants, etc., around you but still far enough not to disturb you) to give you a different world. There is even a pair of beach chairs. Try hard to call your worries but it seems like they are scared away.

Have your breakfast - enough to fulfill you but not too lavish (tea/coffee, toast, butter, jam, tropical fruits, omelette) - and Balinese tea (awesome). Even if you try to go out and see Bali - the pool is so inviting that you cannot resist. Enter the pool and it will not allow you to leave it. We were in the pool from early morning to later afternoon, playing, chatting, enjoying tropical fruit juices and teas and coffees (that we bought) and still did not want to come out in the evening.

Caution: With all the dreamy beauty of the place, there are a few shortcomings. One, on rainy days (say December) expect a lot of dragonflies in the kitchen and a lot of mosquitoes everywhere. Better to close the room in the evening and use some strong mosquito coils. Dragonflies cannot be avoided in the open kitchen (and some times in the vicinity of the pool). But request the staff and they readily clean up. Switch off the kitchen lights when not using. Second, the shower room gets a bit smelly probably due to humidity or imperfect plumbing. Third, the cookware is too less (just a small frying pan and a sauce-pan), old and over-used, molded, and best not to use. The serving dishes and cutlery are fine. Fourth, please bring your own torch for night since the street is dark and Ubud is a village so street lights are few.

Nearby: Stroll for 10 minutes to the Ubud main street to find restaurants (budget to splurge range), small super markets, souvenir shops, spas and massage centers, etc. Monkey forest at a distance of 30 min walk and many dance studios in between.

Service and other arrangements:
The staffs are polite, clean, and friendly.
We asked the reception to arrange for a one day car hire with a driver. Mr. Madi was suggested and he was our transport for the remaining 10 days in Bali although we stayed in Alas Petulu for 3 days. A nice guy, keep his car very clean and non-smelly, simple and easy to talk, yet non-intrusive, accommodates your requests happily if he can, and feels happy with a little bit of respect and tip for accommodating your (sometimes over the board longer than 8 hrs haul) requests.

Though a little bit far from all the attractions, we would like to visit and stay in the private pool villa (seems like the only pool villa in Alas Petulu) every time we revisit Bali.

Room Tip: Choose pool villa if its in your budget.

My wife and i stayed at Alas Petulu in the private villa. When driving up the road we were dubious about the cottages as this was the first time we had stayed there. However upon arrival on the property our thoughts soon changed as we walked through a beautiful garden to our villa. When the porter opened the room we were amazed at the size of the private courtyard with pool and the size of the room. The staff were very helpful in showing us through the area and how work everything. The First morning when we were ready for breakfast we opened the gate to our courtyard and with in 2 minutes one of the staff entered to see if we were ready for our breakfast, then went off and prepaired it for us.
We can only highly recomend this place it was walking distance to the heart of Ubud, and offers a peaceful area to retreat into to unwind.

Room Tip: The Private Villa is very good value!!
