This was such a fun way to spend the afternoon. The host Sang Made was very informative and friendly. His English was excellent and he was a fantastic host. The chef and other staff was also very good at lookin after the group. It was more than just a cooking class, you get to learn about the spices in the market and family traditions. AMAZING food at the end of it all! I would definitely recommend lobong!

I think everyone should do a cooking class with Lobong when you are in ubud. It is so much more than just a cooking class. You get to see the local market and learn about local produce. They then welcome you into their unique home and you learn a bit about traditional balinese customs/rituals. They teach you cooking techniques that can be easily adapted into your own home. We had so much fun cooking and learning with others. And of course, the food we cooked was phenomenal. Overall it was a worthwhile experience and not to miss.

Do not leave Bali without doing this. The cooking is only a small part of what you will experience. Starting with a trip through the market to see how the locals shop for their produce and staples, you will truly experience the life of the Balinese. Back at the Lobong compound, you will learn about daily life, family traditions and spiritual practices. This is the real deal.

The hosts couldn't be more genuine and gracious. The food is spectacular. It may well be the best meal you eat in Bali, and you'll be utterly amazed that you helped create it. It's a bit of a time commitment, but definitely worth it.

I was impressed by how responsive Sang Made, our family host, had been to my emails and this also proved to be true during the cooking class. There were 8 students and we started by visiting the Payangian Market where we got to see different roots, herbs, varieties of rice, palm sugar, and much more. Afterwards we went to the family compound where Chef Dewa (20 years of experience) and 3 assistants taught us how to prepare seven dishes. This has to be one of the BEST cooking classes I have ever taken. It was definitely hands on and everything had been arranged and prepared just right to facilitate preparing all the dishes.
This class is especially worthwhile because you get to visit the family compound (a very nice one), hear about the family history, and see how Sang Made’s mother does the ceremonial offerings at the family temple before the meal was served. You are basically getting a lesson in Balinese culture and traditions as well as a cooking class.
Tip: you will receive a gift at the end of the class, make sure you put the liquid one (won’t tell you what it is) in a Ziploc bag to prevent any leakage in your suitcase.

I have travelled to Bali frequently over the past 20 years and this is one of the best tours I have experienced. More than a cooking school, this is a fantastic day spent learning local produce, culture and cooking with a beautiful sharing family. Thank you Dewa for sharing your passion and cooking wisdom and Sang De for your highly professional delivery of local customs and culture. An awesome day!
