We were a group of 8 (with two kids) with a mixture of meat eaters, vegetarians and three with fish and garlic allergies- but nothing was too much trouble for Wayan and Aunty Puspa! Such an interesting and varied experience. There was plenty of hands on preparation and lots of chances to contribute to the cooking. The food was scrumptious +++. The visit to the market and rice field made so interesting due to Wayan's knowledge and his willingness to share his culture. Highly, highly recommended.

After reading such amazing reviews, we were really looking forward to our cooking class and taking our new knowledge back to our friends at home.
We were picked up at 7am from Legian and taken to the markets in Ubud where we were shown around and given the opportunity to try different fruits and look at the various stalls. This was interesting to see.
After that we hopped in a van and headed to the hosts family rice paddy. There we got to see how many people were actually in our group, around 20 not including some young children. We stood out the front looking at the rice paddy for around 45 minutes which was nice, but a little over done. The host was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and continued to reassure us that the size of our group wouldn't impact on the interactiveness of the day. We then went onto his family home where we were shown around and given a cool drink. By this stage we were getting peckish and were more than ready to get our hands working in the kitchen! More waiting, more showing around and more talking. Finally we head into the kitchen. But with over 20 of us there was little to do, we were all put at a chopping station. The group prepared each meal together. Well by prepared I mean, we got to chop or grate an item each. Then they were cooked by one or two willing volunteers and the hosts wife while we all stood around and watched. Given the size of the class we were given little opportunity to be interactive. Standing around watching other people cook grew more and more tedious so most people sat and waited around chatting with each other while our hunger grew more and more. The first opportunity were were given to eat was at 2.30, and we were all ravenous!!!!
It truly was a waste of time, as it was not a hands on experience. I would have learned more watching Ready Steady Cook.
The class has obviously become so popular that they have increased the class size. I think that perhaps if the class was small it would have been much better. Also, having young children running around and crying did not help!

We found this cooking school on Trip advisor, booked months in advance and were very much looking forward to the experience promised by its reviews. We could not have been more disappointed.
There were 20 people in our group, 10 more people than they should have had. The hosts were friendly and welcoming that was where our enjoyment ended.We were taken to the markets & introduced to some Balinese ingredients, after which were taken to shops and asked if we wanted to buy anything from the guides friend. We were shown the family rice paddies, the host explained how these are run, which was interesting but unnecessary long.
It was not at all interactive, the only thing I actually did all day was grate some coconut (which I had already mastered as a child). We went with another couple and met a couple on the day , we as well as all the others in the very large school spent most of the day with nothing to do and gradually becoming more and more hungry.
We left Legian@ 7am and did not eat until 2:30pm.
I expected to come home & have the knowledge & skills to prepare a beautiful Indonesian meal for my friends and family...but they would be bored with grated coconut.
Re-reading the reviews again I cant believe it was the same place, maybe they have become too greedy and increased the class sized beyond their capacity, but it certainly was not something I would recommend to anyone. This was not a cooking school, we learned nothing and wasted a day on our beautiful holiday in beautiful Bali.

I can't really complain about the day. They were great hosts and made sure everyone was catered for. The price very reasonable. It could have been much better. However, the group was far too big (24 people) so we really didn't get much hands on cooking time. Only two cooking stations. One suggestion - check the numbers before going on this trip.

We had a fantastic experience from booking to transfers from our Villa property to Ubud market, paddi field explanations and warm hospitality in the home or Wayan and Puspa. We have already just last night entertained guests back in Sydney with some of the delicious recipes....which were well received. Have recommended to more friends who are in Bali now for Easter.
