Loved every second. I seriously can't fault a thing at The Samaya Ubud. First and foremost, the staff were so lovely, I have never encountered such warm friendly staff. Our room was perfect, with every thing you need, and the BEST view! This is the kind of place you stay and you never want to leave your room. So glad we only stayed at the Samaya Ubud for the whole 7 nights in Bali. The spa was amazing, we thought we'd only go once but kept going back. Couldn't get enough of the swept away restaurant as well, if you've only got one night in Ubud, make sure you eat at swept away.

We had a two-week trip covering Sumatra and Java and the south of Bali, and wanted to finish off our stay at Bali in a quiet and secluded place which would allow us to fully recharge before the trip back to Europe.

Based on the wonderful reviews The Samaya Ubud had received, I booked an Ayung (river) villa for three nights. Result: Absolute bliss! We stayed at villa 205 which was closest to the spa and furthest from the restaurant, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute we spent in it.

We hardly saw another guest on the premises, and felt at many times like we were the only people in the resort. The butler service was personal and always prompt. Breakfast in the villa increased and added to the overall feeling of luxurious privacy. I used the gym twice during our stay, and found it clean and spacious, and the equipment well-maintained. The spa service was simply exceptional! I thoroughly recommend the Samaya Four Hand and the Shiatzu massages.

On our second evening we had a rijsttafel feast for dinner delivered and served up at our villa. Rijsttafel is a colection of dishes which you eat with rice. I have eaten lots of Indonesian food as I have lived in Asia for much of my life. Every dish that was offered up in that feast was unique, creative, authentic and mouth-wateringly delicious! We did not eat at the two restaurants during our stay, but can only imagine that the quality of the food served up was comparable to what we enjoyed in our villa.

If we ever return to Bali, The Samaya Ubud would be the place we choose to stay in again!

Having stayed many times at the Samaya Seminyak, it was time to try Ubud. An altogether different experience in terms of location, truly relaxing amongst the natural beauty of rice fields and forest, but what was the same was the truly outstanding service and attention to every detail of our stay. Ray and his team have done it once again; beautiful truly beautiful, thank you for a wonderful time.

Room Tip: Speak to the Samaya directly and they will always do what they can to help.

My sister and I stayed here for 2 days in a hillside villa.

After waiting 2 hours for our room to be ready, our initial opinion of the villa was slightly disappointing. I think we probably were given the worst hillside villa though. Photos on this site show some lovely villas with a larger grassed garden area and what looks to be a bigger pool and a bit of a view. These seem to be located higher up on the top level of the resort. The next level of hillside villas are located much lower at the bottom of the resort sitting just behind the river view villas. We reveived one of these.

Now, if I had not seen photos of the much larger hillside villas, I would be more then happy with my villa. It is shinny new, stylish and spacious with one of the most amazing bathroom setups I have experienced. It is just huge with a large shower, lovely bath and nice vanity units. I guess we were just disappointed with the garden area in our villa. We just had a little side garden, a pool situated flush against the side of the villa and a large bale sitting at the end of the pool. The Bale was great to sit in, the pool is much larger then any villa I have stayed at in the past (although too deep - I do like to place my feet at the bottom) but we did hope for a larger garden and a bit of a view as seen in photos posted here by other guests.

The free afternoon tea was amazing - a selection of sandwiches, scones, and 2 little pastries that change every day - how amazing. This would be our lunch! Breakfast was also good and I would recommend that you try this in their restaurant one morning as it offers great padi field views.

It might be because the resort is quite new but it seemed to lack atmosphere. The reception area is very stark and although a large area, simply has some chairs and a reception desk. They could really make this area a beautiful place for guests to sit in with some nice balinese furniture, artwork etc...

Also, although the river at the bottom of the resort is nice, the general grounds are a bit lacking. Another resort that we stayed at in Ubud had beautiful, well maintained grounds with exquisite use of plants - a really lovely place to stroll around. Here there is not that much too look at. It is very steep so it is annoying to walk up the hill to reception youself so you need someone on a buggy to take you up and down and it is not a particularly comfortable ride. Also the main pool area is stark and uninviting although I realise most guests come here to enjoy their own private villa and pool.

Also Swept Away restaurant was a little disappointing. We decided to book here on our last night as we had a midnight flight and rather then take the shuttle for 20 mins into Ubud and then back again, thought it would be convenient to eat here. We had also read some good reports on this site. Well, you do not need to book. We were the only ones here all night. It is a shame as the restaurant sits right next to the river and at night is nicely lit up with candles. I guess the prices are just too high for the average person. Maybe they should offer a discount for in-house guests or a free entree with your meal or something to encourage people to eat here. We were not overly impressed with the food and mentioned that the lobster entree was raw. The chef came out at the end of the night and we mentioned this again and he just said it was cooked medium and not raw. We said we could not eat the dish but it did not seem to bother him.

I know the above sounds like I did not enjoy this resort. I did like it here. As mentioned, the villa is lovely, new and stylish, afternoon tea impressive, staff/drivers friendly and efficient, and breakfast good. It just lacks atmosphere...

A good up market option in Ubud if you don't mind commuting. Hill pool villa are a good size with pleasing modern decor. Staff are very friendly and the complimentary afternoon tea is a nice touch. Outdoor space is excellent, and pool is a decent size but 1.8m depth throughout may be a bit much for some. Restaurant is of a high standard but very over-priced for both food and beverages - equivalent quality for 60% of the cost is available elsewhere. Limitations costing a 5* rating: Location is up to 30min drive from the town centre when traffic is heavy and problems with the shuttle can be wearing. Very steep hills in the resort limits the enjoyment of wandering about. Light blocking is poor and early waking can happen in the mornings. Snagging in the villa decor has a few limitations e.g. Water stains on the marble floors.

We spent four nights at the Samaya Ubud whilst on honeymoon and wished we'd have had more time there. We had spend the previous eight nights at the Samaya Seminyak and we're looking forward to finding out how they compared. We definately weren't dissapointed. The staff were equally as friendly and attentive but the setting and villas were completely different. Set right in the countryside, surrounded by rice fields, jungle and mountains, it felt as though we were right in the heart of Bali.
The view from the lobby and both restaurants was breathtaking and a complete surprise.
We had a Hillside Villa which was spacious and beautiful. The outside space was stunning - surrounded by huge trees which made it so secluded. The pool was the perfect size and really deep and the cabana was ideal to relax in when you wanted to get out of the sun.
The resort provides a shuttle service which is really handy as Ubud is about a 10/15 minute drive away. However, we found that it didn't turn up to take us back to the resort at the time arranged so it's less hassle just to go with one of the hundreds of guys offering a taxi service. It usually only cost about 50,000-70,000 rupiah (with a bit of haggling) which is about £4/5.
We did an early morning guided walk through the rice fields and local village which is offered free by the resort. It was amazing and we'd definately recommend it. You need to go early (we left at 7.30am) as it gets hot very quickly and there is no shade out in the rice fields.
We didn't have an evening meal whilst we were there but the breakfast and afternoon tea was fantastic - really fresh and well presented.
The Samaya Ubud is the perfect contrast to the Samaya Seminyak as the quality and hospitality is equally as good but it felt completely different in terms of location. We couldn't recommend it more, especially for a private and relaxing honeymoon.

Summary:
- Incredibly luxurious villa
- Perfect service
- Amazing cuisine
- One-in-a-million location
- Beautiful beautiful beautiful wedding

Full Review:
We have incredible memories of our stay at the Samaya, as we were married there! And we can safely say the entire experience was absolutely amazing from the moment we arrived.

Our positive experience began several weeks before we travelled to Bali. We e-mailed the resort regarding our wedding plans and received a prompt and enthusiastic response. Our wedding was actually organised in two parts: the organisation of the legalities through a wedding planner, and the organisation of the place and time of the ceremony at the resort.

Upon our evening arrival in Bali, we were greeted by a driver who took us from Ngurah Rai airport directly to Ubud. He was extremely careful and courteous, and we had a range of refreshments available in the van! Our room was perfect, as was the surprise six (6) course degustation dinner I had organised for my fiancee! Each course was delivered and served, and, to put it simply, we have NEVER experienced such incredible food!

We stayed in a hillside villa - and it was stunning! The bathroom was to die for. The pool was perfect. The gazebo was amazing. In the morning, breakfast was delivered to the villa and served wherever we wanted it. The breakfast menu choices were many, but, even then, requests for non-menu dishes would be accepted without hesitation!

The wedding planner organised all the legalities for us. Be aware that it took at least half a day to get everything done, so you may want to allow an extra day to unwind. Having said this, the process itself was simple and exceedingly well planned!

The wedding day itself...... First of all, 2 hours spent in the day spa (included) was simply beautiful. The spa overlooked the flowing river and the girls were amazing. Best massage and facial. The manager then organised a small lunch and champagne in our villa while we got ready for the ceremony. The hotel also organised the photographers, which were also included. I cannot tell you how beautiful the photos were and the presentation was unbelievable. They also gave us a disk which had over 300 photographs.

Only the photos of the ceremony can reveal how stunning they were. Never have I seen such a beautiful display. We also had local musicians play traditional Bali music, which added a special touch.

Management moved us to a new villa for our wedding night and this was set on the river. Amazing!! AND - they put floral displays i.e petals shaped as lovehearts etc all over the room. Sooooo romantic. Another six course meal (different this time) was served on our balcony which overlooked the river.

Whilst staying at The Samaya I think we only saw about 2 other guests in total, although I believe the resort was busy. It's that kind of place.... If you want privacy, tranquility and paradise - this is THE place!

Thank you to Wayan (manager), Tjok (hotel wedding planner), and Setya (butler) who went above and beyond to help us and make our stay so enjoyable.

We would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending the Samaya, Ubud, as a truly amazing place to stay.
