“So lovely and peaceful”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

I rented a house near Kubu Merta last year, and when I had friends come visit, I did a really thorough search for the best place for them to stay around Ubud for under $35/night. Kubu Merta was by far the best, and my friends stayed for 3 weeks and were happy with it.
This year, when I came back to Bali from NYC, I stayed there for a week, until my house became available again, and I was completely satisfied. I also had two other friends stay there this year, and they were very happy with it.

- The rooms are lovely, immaculate, and have HUGE bathrooms with jacuzzi tubs. (There are 2 budget rooms as well, that aren't advertised, and have very small bathrooms, but are otherwise very adequate) You might see a geko in your room, or a waterbug in the bathroom - but these are part of traveling in Asia, and do not reflect that it is dirty

- The beds are clean and very comfortable (best mattresses I've seen at a budget place, good western-style ones)

- The whole place is maintained really well, nicely landscaped, super clean, and many artistic touches that are so "Bali" but are missing in many places in this price range.

- It is quiet - you can hear ducks in the ricefield during the day, and a symphony of frogs out there at night, but I was not bothered by construction or dogs barking as someone was in the reviews below - the construction project must be over (but in Ubud, there seems to be construction everywhere these days, so that's a danger anywhere). Also, it's far from the road (100 meters) so traffic sounds are very muted, and the area has very little traffic anyways

- The pool is really pretty, lined by gray stone, that gives it a luminous color, and has a big decorated Ganesha statue at it's head, and two huge frog fountains on the corners. There's a nice gazebo with tables near the pool, but no beach chairs - the space is a bit small for that

- Upstairs there are two decks where you can sit and enjoy the view of the ricefields - and in the mornings you can see Mount Agung and 5 other volcanos from upstairs - it's breathtaking, and very unusual to have such a view

- The staff is helpful and friendly. The owner/manager, Wayan, is very helpful, and speaks english, but is not always around, especially during the times of year when there are many ceremonies in her village (a very Bali problem). The other staff do not speak english, and spend much of the day cleaning - so if you want concierge-type service, this place isn't for you, you're kind of on your own.

- This is probably not a place to book tours thorough, given what I read in the review below - but there are many many places in town that specialize in that.

- Also, I can't speak for their breakfasts, but they don't have a professional chef or a big kitchen, so they will definitely be basic. You can easily order delivery from town (ie BaliBuda), and they will let you store your own fruit etc in the fridge there if you like. There is always drinking water, and if ever there wasn't (as apparently happened to a person who wrote a review last year), there is a convenience store right down the driveway, a 2 minute walk.

- What IS missing is working wifi - I get 5 bars, but can't connect. I got an aircard (some call a dongle) for my computer, and a data card for my ipad in town, and the reception was excellent at the hotel (Simpati is the best brand of card for Ubud, and you can get them for iphone and other types if they are "unlocked," in the part of town called Peliatan).

- FYI, on facebook there's a group called Ubud Community, you can post there to find out about good drivers and tour guides, as well as any other technical details for your stay.

This is not a full-service luxury hotel with highly trained staff, a huge menu, and bells and whistles, but it is very lovely and well-maintained. if you want privacy and beauty, in a very mellow setting (only 6 rooms!), it is great.

Room Tip: The room with twin beds is a little dark. The others are all lovely. They also have a 2 BR house o...

Beautiful cottage type of room with a large bathroom. The staff was very friendly & brought us whatever we wished for breakfast. Arranged rafting & transport from the airport & to Kuta with no probelms at all. The only minus point in this hotel is that it is quite away from the main street & the pool is very small. But for the price its very reasonable.

The villa is a bit away from the central Ubud area and one would expect that it will provide for a quiet and relaxing stay. Far from the truth, there is construction in the vicinity and you hear the passing cars. The rooms are very basic with below average furniture. The bedding is horrible, stained and borderline not clean. Breakfast cannot be called breakfast, with exception of the coffee which is good. The choice is limited for 4 items and that is a stretch. You better not count on it. The pull is very small and not very clean. The staff tries to be friendly. I would not say the same about the guest house manager (Dian). She is constantly talking on her personal phone and you will be treated as a bother if you ask for help. When she gives you a recommendation on activity, all she cares is how much money she can make from you. This applies to even having the driver of the villa drop you off in Ubid - the charge is double what you will pay otherwise.

MUST READ!

We stayed here for 4 nights as a newly wed couple on our honeymoon. The rooms generally looked nice (read last part for further analysis) and the guest house manager (Dian) was friendly. However, when we tried to book some day trips through Dian, the experience left us very broke and upset. To be fair, she was very resourceful helping us plan our itineraries for the 3 full days that we were in Bali. We were able to do everything we wanted to do for the duration of our stay. But the itineraries were executed unprofessionally and unreliably. Reasons are as follow:

#1: House manager did not provide written agreement regarding the price and activities for the day trips. Price and activities were altered after the fact.
- When we agreed on having the house manager, Dian, book the trips for us on the phone, she said we will be taking a boat ride out for snorkeling. But she texted us the night before our snorkeling trip that snorkeling will be off the shore. The snorkeling experience was still beautiful off the shore, but it just doesn't seem right that she changed things after the fact.
- At the end of our last day of excursion, the driver's price changed from 800,000 Indonesian Rupiah "for the day" to "per person". That means we paid close to $180US for a driver to drive us to Tulamben snorkeling with equipment, a guide and bad lunch, Tirtagangga (where we had to pay our own entrance fees) and Blue Lagoon. Hold on! Why are we paying a driver driving us for 10 hours with that much money!? We later found out that a typical going rate for a driver is about $40-50US if you book on your own in Ubud. We could have booked a guide, got better lunch and rented equipment as well as getting a driver for way cheaper than what we ended up paying. Well that is just great because we have now overspent, and my wife is super upset because she thought we could trust the house manager. My wife specifically told Dian that we are on a budget before we even started planning things with Dian. We would have never agreed to pay a one day excursion of $180 for the two of us. My wife's recollection of the agreement was all prices were quoted for the day. As it should be and as it was for the first day where it was 300,000 Indonesian Rupiah going to Monkey Forest, Tanah Lot, Ubud for dinner (we paid the dinner), and back to Kubu Merta. My recollection was the first and last days were quoted for the day, and the 2nd day was per person. For your info, on our 2nd day trip, we paid 600,000 IR per person for the driver going to Batur Mountain for sunrise and a hike with a guide, coffee plantation, and Tegallantang Rice Terrace. My wife was already having a bad feeling about the pay on the 2nd day as there was no written agreement to reference to what she thought the price was supposed to be. So finally on our last excursion trip when the price did not turn up to be the agreed upon price, we confronted Dian, the house manager, she claimed that all trips were supposed to be per person. Hold on again, do you see how messy and unorganized this is? If it was done professionally with a written and signed agreement, we wouldn't be all in disagreement. We truly feel ripped off!

#2: Watch out for that tan coloured little hatchback car! Because that car comes with a driver with unfriendly and unprofessional service, and unsafe environment.
- He kept "forgetting" to turn the AC on when it is scourging 30+ degrees Celsius. One time we asked him to turn on the AC, he said he kept it off because he was cold. He was pretty reluctant to turn on the AC as well when we kindly told him we were sweating buckets and overheated.
- There was no seat belt on the passenger seat that was directly behind the driver's seat. When we asked the driver about it, he simply responded that it didn't exist.
- On our last trip, the driver was supposed to pick us up at 6am, he called us at 5:55am asking if we can push the pick up time out to 7am. Come on, we woke up at 5am to prepare for our snorkeling trip! Of course we insisted on leaving at 6am. He picked us up at 6:15am and he was pretty grumpy and unfriendly for the rest of the day.
- While the driver sips on his chilled bottled water, we were thirsty and too tired to ask for our two complimentary bottled water. He never offered the bottled water for us.

Further analysis of the guesthouse itself:
- Drinking water not readily available -The description of Kubu Merta specifically said "unlimited drinking water" (http://kubumerta.wordpress.com/2010/04/03/villa-kubu-merta-room-rates/). One early morning, we asked for drinking water, but they ran out. We sort of thought it was understandable because we asked them at 6am in the morning. On that same day, we asked them for drinking water again when we came back from our day trip as we thought "hey they had a whole day to get more drinking water", but hey said they ran out, again. Drinking water is pretty fairly priced in Ubud. We could have easily went to a corner store for it, but rules are rules, if it says "unlimited drinking water", we had to insist for our drinking water. It felt awkward when we have to demand for something as simple as drinking water.
- Free WiFi regularly went down. We had to call the front desk to restart the router.
- Quite noisy at night with nearby dogs barking, despite being in the quiet countryside (not their fault but not quite what a newly wed couple would be hoping for)
- Breakfast was not good. Bland and not fresh. Ubud town has amazing food. Actually, Ubud is quite famous for its food. It is not like Cuba where food is generally bland, then it is acceptable that food is bland at a hotel/resort. That's why we felt the breakfast at Kubu Merta was pretty disappointing.

Long story short, this place is not too bad because the price is fair and the staff are trying their best. But if you are looking for a reliable place to stay, look elsewhere! And if you do decide to stay at this place, don't book your excursions with them. Feel free to discuss what you want to do in Bali with them, but don't actually pay them to book it for you. You are way better off finding a deal in Ubud town.

We are writing this on our last night's stay. And we are pretty ready to get out of Kubu Merta and never return.

Room Tip: Ask for Kubu 5, it is the biggest one. The room at Kubu 3 has really dim lighting, which is good som...
