“Give me this villa over any hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2011

Beautiful villa . It does not have the unpersonal feeling of a large hotel , it is comfortable, nice views, great amenities, great staff. It only has 6 rooms and all around the pool and the general areas have a view , there is a living room , and a dininng room (one large table) . These general areas are open which gives this great feel of being a guest at someone's vacation home.
- You can have your meals in your room or room terrace or simply sit a t the large table in the dinning room (open air - with a roof just no walls).. I loved this. I sat at the large table for breakfast most of the time .
- Room is spacious for 2 people, with a terrace, all facing pool and rice fields.
- Room has an outdoor shower, look up !! Enjoy the view of the tree tops, the sky, the stars.
- You get afternoon tea every day ...delicious and great choice offered.
- Mini bar drinks same price if you order them outside your room. Hotels offer different prices.
- You can have dinner which is 3 course meal , usually around 20Euro , not bad. Obviously you can go out for a lot less but I do suggest you try it at least once. Price is still ok in comparison to Europe.
- Breakfast is great !!! You have a variety. On 2 occassions what was offered was local type of breakfast, I thought, ok I have been steering away from that but sure I'll be open to try. One time I had Nasi....It was so delicious. Don't think I've had Nasi like that. Another time it was rice with I dont remember what but it was moist , it was also good. Be open to it , if you don't like it you still have the other choices.
- You can order snacks in the afternoon.
- There are rice fields right behind the pool, an amazing view. ..you don't need to get our of the pool , all is an open view.
- Staff is so friendly, they speak good english , they take good care of you.
- The villa offers a driver/ shuttle to Ubud, which is only a brief drive to. You can call him to pick you up. The shuttle only starts at 10am. At first I thought that was too late bu honestly once you are walking around in Ubud you want to cut your day to come back to dip into the pool. If you are an early riser you can always walk to ubud , a short 10-15m walk and on sidewalk. Narrow sidewalk but sidewalk nonetheless.
- If you walk from Ubud to the villa for the 1st time make sure you ask (the villa) exactly which street you need to turn into once you reach the roundabout/statue. I thought I had memorized it and had the right one. Ended up on the wrong street..although with lots of temples in view. I just eneded up calling the villa for the driver to pick me up...I was so close. O h well maybe that is just me :)
- The villa provides info on several walking or bike itinerary (you can borrow a mountain bike at the villa). I did the walking itinerary that leads back to the villa through the rice fields...and the itinerary does not lie, walking along the extremely narrow (one foot at a time) levy is challenging. You end up with muddy feet...so sturdy shoes are indeed adviced. Only tip is that the only thing about that particular path was that there was a lot of garbage along the way.(comment not relevant to the villa !!) I found what is called Ubud Kaja and that is the most amazing area to walk around, all rice fields, an organic cafe and you may stumble upon an artist or two along the way selling his art.
- Back to the villa , I had very thick pillows and I had trouble with my neck . I mentioned that to the owner at the end of the trip and he mentioned that actually he has other type of pillows , so advice is to approach him in case you want the pillow to be changed.
- If you book more than 3 days you get about 10 hours with a driver, so you can organizd a day trip. The Villa offers some suggestions.
- Area is calm, that is what i loved. You can find within walking distance 2 local restaurants which are actually mentioned in the Lonely planet and Rough guide.
- You can find other cheaper places to stay but you know if you have been touring Bali and you are close to leaving, treat yourself to this lovely place. Other places may not offer the same amenities either.
- They have a spa, it is smaller but definetly clean. It is pricier than the ones in Ubud but like I mentioned, clean. I went into a spa in Ubud on the Monkey Road, had a foot massage, was great but you could clearly see that the towel they were using had been used before. Same thing in another one where I had a different massage . So shop around if you want, even ask to see the facilities but if you want no worries the one from the villa is worth a visit.
- A solo traveller you feel safe here.
- Overall I would stay here again if I come back to Bali.

I recently stayed in Villa Sabandari and absolutely loved it.

The room was large with tasteful decor. Spotlessly clean. My room was upstairs with a big deck overlooking the lovely pool, the lush gardens and rice paddies beyond.

Very good food. Great spa treatments.
Although only minutes from downtown, the free anytime shuttle to and from Ubud was great.

Management and staff were so friendly and helpful.

Exceeded my expectations.

Everything about our stay at Villa Sabandari was excellent, starting with the complimentary pick-up car/driver from the airport. . The rooms are elegant, spacious, comfortable and spotless, with wonderful flower arrangements and a welcome bowl of fresh fruits on arrival. Check out the Villas' website photo gallery because when you arrive everything is just as good as it looks on line (with some places this is not always the case). The breakfasts and afternoon teas are something to look forward to, always different and delicious. The staff are welcoming and gentle in manner, extremely efficient yet unobtrusive. We both enjoyed the complimentary massage the day after our arrival. Also the complimentary car service to the central ubud area and pick-up when you want to return is terrific. There are numerous good places to eat around Ubud. It's also great to eat dinner in at the Villas. To swim in the infinity pool and look down to the rice paddies and across to the temple is just breathtaking, so beautiful, calm and serene. The area is rich with interesting and scenic walks, short and long, bicycle or car trips. There are Temples, Art Galleries, Arts and Crafts outlets of every description, something for everyone. My husband being a keen walker did some hiking through the countryside and villages. Because I have back problems I enjoyed a more relaxed stay making good use of the stunning pool area .
We'd like to congratulate Dirk, his wife and all the staff and we confirm every compliment paid by earlier reviewers of the Villa Sabandari complex. We stayed five nights and wish we had booked for longer.

Room Tip: Upstairs or downstairs closest to rice paddies

To celebrate my birthday we booked 10 days at the Villa Sabandari and were not disappointed. It is a beautiful site, overlooking a rice paddie, a lovely infinity pool, delicious food, wonderful staff and only a few minutes from the busy hectic town of Ubud. We felt we had our own private retreat as there are only 6 villas on the property, adults only. I would love to come back and highly recommend it as THE place to stay in Ubud. The Villa has its own spa, a fantastic chef, varied and filling breakfasts, afternoon tea with sweet and savoury snacks. A memorable birthday indeed made even more special by being presented with a lovely cake too.

After over a dozen trips to Bali I consider myself somewhat of an expert on staying in paradise. While Bali and Ubud has seemingly unlimited nice places to stay, Villa Sabandari stands alone in my experiences. This statement is a reflection on the staff. Many others have exonerated Sabandari's beautiful view and quiet 'middle of nowhere feel,' while so close to the heart of Ubud. Very true. Yet for me the unparalleled quality is the staffs attention to detail. They have the ability to make each guest feel more important than the next. Due to the small size of Sabandari (6 villas) there is never a need to wait to be spoiled. For my wife's birthday they spread flower petals and candles all over our private patio for an utterly romantic dinner surprise. My wife and I absolutely loved Sabandari and recommend it to anyone coming to Bali.

Stayed at Sabandari in April and we loved this place. It is true what all of the other reviews say. So peaceful and the service is fantastic. The staff are just so helpful and really nothing is too much trouble for them. The villas are located just outside of the main hub of UBUD which is a good thing as it is in a very quite and tranquil location. The day spa is really lovely as well and worth a visit. Would definitely recommend this place you won't be disappointed.

After the hustle and bustle of busy Ubud and surrounding area, it was great to return to Villa Sabandari for afternoon tea and cake on our terrace overlooking the rice fields. The pool was steps away from our door and nice to cool off and watch the activity in the rice fields. Agree 100% with all written before, with extra special mention to the staff that do a fab job as nothing is too much for them and they really are the icing on the cake. Dirk should be proud to lead a team like this.
Info box in room was very helpful if you are looking to do some walks or bike trips of the surrounding areas as maps and suggested routes provided. Bikes in excellent condition and helmets provided. Did a couple of day tours with car and driver which worked well, all arranged through Sabandari and they can suggest itineries. Also they assisted with the Batur trek using their recommended tour agent who arranged the guide once at Batur - be warned a 3am pick up but only an hours drive and probably a 2 hour climb if reasonably fit.
Would recommend 2 restaurants without a doubt, Cafe Kampung in Tegallalang, which you pass during the cycle tour and also Ibu Rai in central Ubud.

Room Tip: Cake and great teas. Bliss, no kids!
