Sometimes in the tropics it can feel like you can never get really clean, so Carik Spa's Turkish steam bath and scrub is the perfect solution. The only Turkish bath in Ubud, it is a real find for the intrepid spa-goer.

This modest, bamboo-constructed spa in the rice fields on the way to Sari Organik is staffed by three delightful women who welcomed me with a chat and a cup of ginger tea.

Then, after first securing my bag and clothes in a locker, I was led to a marble-lined room that was filled to the ceiling with steam. My therapist Wayan (who worked for many years in Turkey) invited me to lay down on a thin vinyl mat on the marble slab and draped a sarong over me. After leaving me to enjoy the steamy ambience and the colourful Moroccan-style lamp above my head for 5-10 minutes, she removed the sarong and splashed warm water over me in preparation for the scrub. Then she donned a textured fabric mitt and scrubbed my body vigorously until the skin came off - quite a lot of it!

Once the scrub was done, my therapist used a bag filled with soap suds to cover me in a luxurious foam, before massaging my body with the foam and finishing with a thorough and soapy scalp massage. Then she splashed more bowls of warm water over me and I was done.

I finished my spa experience with a Balinese massage with Nyoman in the open-air bale - the sounds of the ducks and workers in the neighbouring rice fields reminded me of where I was, even when I started to drift off on the table.

After all of this, I felt new born and ready to face the traffic again. I will definitely be back for a return visit.

My friend and I booked the Turkish bath at Carik for an hour and just luxuriated in getting the grime of the Ubud traffic scrubbed away amidst rice paddies by delightful ladies whose small frames hid a powerful arm when it came to said scrubbing!!! Wonderful relaxing massage amongst the bubbles and hot water followed the 'polish' of our skin. While we were getting dressed and sipping our ginger tree we realized we had miscalculated the time it would take us to get back into town and to the restaurant we had booked for our last night dinner. We asked the ladies how much a motorbike taxi would be as there was only foot traffic and bikes going past the premises, no room for cars. They told us 'nothing' and donning helmets two of them whisked us down through the rice fields and the rush hour traffic to come to a screeching halt at our restaurant bang on time. Needless to say that has become one of the great moments of our trip - such unthinking generosity of time and spirit. You might not need their bike handling skills but be assured your body will be in great hands!!

The ladies at Carik Spa are just wonderful. Our treatment was excellent and we loved the flower bath. Definitely recommended. I wish we had a few more days to experience other treatments.

Dropped in and the service as excellent and very welcoming. As always the ear candling was an 'odd' experience' - but well executed in a lovely setting.

They do massages - but didn't have the time (last day) to stop and experience that as well.

Fancy trying out yr first turkish bath in Bali? Thats exactly what i did, and it certainly won't be my last.
Found into this place on my way to Sari Organic. Decided on the 1hr Turkish bath and 90min balinese massage. The turkish bath was really refreshing consisting of repeated body scrub using a loofah type of cloth alternating with stream and stream of warm water. Then you will get a body massage using ample amount of bubble soap. Finally your head will be massaged while your hair is being shamppoed. Awesome!
The balinese massage was done at an open gazebo area overlooking the rice field. Ample curtains around if u prefer more privacy. Komang, my masseur was fantastic, one of the best i had so far.
Heard this place is owned by Turkish owner who married a local. The place was opened a year ago & the workers were claimed to be trained in Turkey. I would certainly return with more friends in future
