“'Kubuku' memories in Nuriani”
Reviewed November 21, 2011

We came as a hotel guest but we left as friends of the hotel.
The General Manager, Mr Manik and his restuarant supervisor, Ms Putu have been excellent host and made our stay so much more interesting and pleasant. Their staff are very sincerely friendly. They are long time resident of Ubud and Putu herself grew up in Ubud. Her knowledge of Ubud helps me to rekindle my long lost fond memories of Kubuku bungalows in Ubud which I stayed about 15 years ago. But it is sadly been demolished to give way to newer buildings.

We were looking for a place to stay for about a month in Ubud. Our driver, Pak Nyoman, recommended that we stay at Nuriani Guesthouse, which is family run. The manager, Pak Manik, took us to visit the recently opened new bedrooms - these delightful 3 bedrooms are located above the Nuriani's Bar and Restaurant, strategically located in Padang Tegal. The rooms are new, spacey, clean and with rice paddy view from each balcony; we were very happy to find that WIFI is accessible from the room. We enjoyed the fact that it is very easy to stroll along to Monkey Forest and Jalan Hanoman as there are so many interesting shops. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive, we enjoyed our breakfast each morning by the rice paddy field. They have a 7-day breakfast menu. It was a wonderful experience. We would recommend that anyone checks it out and we definitely would stay there again the next time we visit Ubud.

The charismatic guesthouse Nuriani was my first stop on my first trip to Indonesia. On a hindsight it might've been smarter to get a more luxurious room with airconditioning (which are available, but were all occupied at the time) after the long trip to Bali and culture/climate shock.

Nevertheless the standard room was cozy, had a decent bed, and a hot shower (not all rooms have properly working hot water!). The staff is friendly, and they serve a decent breakfast. The biggest plus however is that it's located in the very center of Ubud, which is a great place to visit. Especially the Nuriani and Dirty Duck restaurants are nearby must-visits.

When I went to Ubud I was booked into the Panorama hotel which to say the least was terrible. I won't even mention what they called breakfast as it was almost too small to see what I was eating not to mention overcooked. I moved to the Nuriani after eating at the restaurant and meeting the friendly staff. The food was so good I ate there every night. The air-conditioned room was spotlessly clean and quiet though climbing the stairs after a few Bintang was challenging. The food was absolutely delicious. I tried something different each night and enjoyed every meal. Breakfast was of a good size and even included a bowl of fruit. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. As an added bonus, the Nuriani was cheaper than the Panorama. I would go back to this guest house any time I go to Ubud and recommend the Nuriani to anyone knowing they will not regret the decision.

The room was dirty (walls and the bathroom ceiling had cobwebs with filth trapped in them), poorly lit at night (2 30 watt bulbs made it impossible to read or do anything in the room), and was insanely noisy (every morning at 5:30 am to 12:00 midnight there was constant traffic and honking outside my window). Most of the staff didn't speak English and the ones who did were unhelpful and even rude. I have to say one of the boys who worked there was awesome but the rest were awful. Overall not worth the money. Everywhere else i have stayed in Indonesia has been a much better value.

We were very surprised to see the guesthouse with his friendly staff. By staying there you get a real idea about daily balinese life. You see the offering in the housetemple and sometimes you hear the young boys playing the gamelan. We also watched the girls of the family practising balinese dance. We had a very good room, clean and nice furnished. The staff was always friendly and helpfull. We had a great time there and we are sure we will be back next time. Very good value for money.
