“Really enjoyed our stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2012

Resort feels typical Balinese. Pools lovely. Setting lovely - nice gardens and gates etc. Service - nothing too much trouble and free shuttle into town and back very handy. Room nicely decorated but ours had an unpleasant smell - asked staff to mop the floors and okayish after that. Outside bathroom a novelty but if you don't like creepy crawlies not for you. We enjoyed it though. Would highly recommend it if you plan to stay in Ubud.

We had a beautiful stay at Waka Namya last month! The staff of WN is really attending and helpful. Trips, scooter rental, food, service: everything is taken care of. We really recommend the beautiful accomodation in peaceful Panestana, just 5 minutes from Ubud!

we left it late to book our accommodation in Bali- we spent 3 nights in hong kong and arranged our Ubud accommodation from there. On the phone the lady was very helpful and quoted a reasonable rate which included 2 x 30 min massages and a free dinner- bonus- we booked!
it is quite a drive from the airport- about 1.5 hours but we were so glad we started our Bali experience in Ubud. Waka Namya is just outside Ubud in Penestanan but walkable into the centre or the hotel has a free shuttle bus- that takes you whenever you want to go. On the first night we got dropped into the centre of Ubud and were reccomended a great restuarant Nomad (food and cocktails were great) we thought we would walk back to the hotel after dinner- but we got lost!! after an argument and realising we got lost we phoned the hotel and they came and collected us!!
Waka Namya is very relaxed- no Tv's, just beautiful surroundings, with traditional rice barn cottages with intricate carved doors, aged statues and tropical gardens. The pool area is nice with comfy sun loungers- although we went in the rainy season so didn't make much use of these. (although it was hot and then very sunny when we went south to Semiyak).
Massage and free dinner was superb- but the highlight is the Breakfast Banana pancakes!!
the staff are delightful and they host activities like the early morning rice paddy walk and learning to make the offering plates from banana leafs- which are well worth doing.
Ubud is lovely with great culture, art, shopping and a real sense of calm. For a real feel of bali I think Waka Namya is perfect.

Room Tip: the rice barns are nice- 2 levels with a day bed and your own garden

though the grounds are beautiful and the room spacious, the air conditioner doesnt work, and the hot water is lukewarm at best. the place has character, but is not very well kept up and kind of dirty. the staff is polite and kind, except when they are trying to force you to buy their tour packages. in all honesty, im not really a high maintenance traveller, but for the price i'm paying to be here, waka namya is not worth it. do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

Bali, the island of Gods. One of the most feared destination for most unmarried couples. If you haven’t heard, Bali is known to have a curse which has broken up several relationships including mine years ago.

This holiday was a much needed and anticipated one. For several reasons, my Javanese other half (we shall refer as PC) and I wanted to have a relaxing trip from our busy and stressing schedules, another was going to a place we both love and wanting to discover more even though we’ve both been to Bali before.

I remember 4 years ago, when had my first trip, we were luxuriously pampered while residing in Conrad Bali and spent my days rafting, visiting Kuta, dinner at Seminyak and bar hopping with other like-minded alcoholics at the famed Kudeta and Hu’u bar.

This time, in a much mellower and spiritual me, we have decided to stay in Ubud since PC had also been staying in Seminyak area. By default, I was delegated to look for accommodations while PC does the flights.

I happened to chance upon one of Waka Namya while researching on resort interiors and accent decor and in a blink of my eye, i booked it.

Waka Namya Ubud, a quiet haven is built in Penestanan, a village in Ubud district which is famous for its artist, sculptors and galleries that display most but if not all of Bali’s creative talents. The founder and developer is non other than Ketut Siandana, a famous Bali architect who is widely renowned for designing resorts.

Driving along the padi fields and minutes away from the Monkey forest, we arrived at Waka Namya after 40 minutes ride from the airport. The hotel is sand coloured pleasing with natural moss on stone sculptures and algae growing on slates that bring out an old world feel. What's great about living at Waka Namya is that it is situated in the heart of the artistic district of Bali. Along side my resort are tie-dye artistes, painters, stone carvers and then you can the drfit.

I opted to stay in Lanai Deluxe, a small villa with the option of another interconnecting villa, which can hold up to 4 couples. In each spacious villa, lies a King Size Bed with a canopy to keep any potential mozzie intruders, study table, mini bar and a huge chest at the end of the bed. The wardrobe is situated at the back facing the semi-outdoorsy bathroom that comes with a outdoor shower and bath tub that pretty much faces the padi fields.

At Waka Namya, you will expect no TV in your room. The resort believes in maintaining a relaxing and tranquil ambience so if you are a coach potato, this isn't the place for you.
Inside each villa compound has a shared pool among 4 villas and we were quite fortunate as all our neighbors were not the sun basking sort. So, we had the luxury of spending 2 quiet mornings reading and marinating in the sun and try to stay away from the grass patch if you're afraid of harmless geckos and salamanders.

Wifi is available throughout the compound, but i tried staying away from surfing unless I needed to google for restaurants and do online check-ins for my flight back. For those of you, who plan to travel without a laptop, Waka Namya has a shared computer at its outdoorsy lounge area to cater to your needs.

Breakfast is served at the art-gallery-restaurant that serves continental array of muffins and croissants or your choice of local delights such as mee goreng topped with a sunny side up.

My take on Waka Namya is, its recommended for those who love tranquility, nature loving, contented with nothingness and just being.

We stayed here for a couple nights and regretted not having longer to enjoy it. The location is an easy 20 minute walk into central Ubud, but their shuttle service was always easy to deal with as well. (and the driver we had was very friendly. I forget his name, but he was amazing.)

I had read some old (2 yrs+) reviews of the place, and can't say that I found anything to agree with. The place was clean (apart from some occasional dust in the room from the traditional roof - hard to avoid) and the linen etc crisp. They did a great job of turning down our bed each night too. I loved the outdoor bathroom.

There wasn't really anything to complain about. The place was comfortable, private, helpful and uber relaxing. I didn't do the rice patty walks, but that was because we did a Cycle tour that covered them (Bali Adventure Tours - Thoroughly Recommended!!!)

We had their hotel breakfast and it was very tasty. The Balinese Kopi in particular was fantastic, as were the pankcakes. We didn't try the other meals there

Waka Namya is very comfortable, clean, tidy and won't disappoint. Its location in relation to Ubud and nearby tours etc, is ideal.

Room Tip: We had room number 1 and it was very nice

While we found the location ideal a 20 minute walk or so from Ubud Central and outside the hustle and bustle of the main roads; the WaKa Namya and many of its staff are past its prime. This property in its day was surely superb, but it is now in need of a major make-over. (It is our impression that "Waka Resorts" only recently purchased this property and has not yet fully renovated.) It could be splendid but not yet close.
