“Lovely setting but a little too far from Ubud”
Reviewed July 23, 2010

If you want a holiday relaxing by the pool then this will suit you, but we wanted to see as much as possible and found it was a bit too far from Ubud - 20 mins to walk ( a nice scenic walk, but only suitable for daytime), or 20 minutes around by car. Our driver was pretty worried he wouldn't find the place in the dark, very rough section of road near the end! Showers definitely not easy to control, gas & it keeps cutting off & on! Had to pay for drinking water but Kokos is otherwise value for money. Quite expensive to get any laundry done, but too far to cart it into the town! Only met the owner on the day we were checking out. The eco bike tour is a must to do!

Klub Kokos is great for families. It has a good pool, a table tennis table, an excellent library and a toy room that my kids (10, 12, 16) were a bit too old for. The gardens are well-maintained and typically Balinese-beautiful. The rooms are reasonably clean. The restaurant has a long menu and varied choice of western and Asian dishes. The food was good (not great) and reasonable (not great) value. My 10 year old said it was the best spaghetti bolognaise she has ever had, but I don’t go to Bali to eat spag bog.

Our bedsheets were old but clean. Our bedcover was bloodstained, but it was too warm to use it anyway. We hired the rooms that make up a two-bedroom suite when the adjoining doors are opened. This is a very good arrangement and if we had stayed longer, would definitely have put the kitchenette to better use.

Kids loved the outdoor bathrooms and the freezer filled with icecreams. I liked the personal safety deposit boxes, often missing in mid-price hotels.

The walk to town is worth doing every day you are there. Cabs take a longer route and seemed reluctant to make the trip for less than 40,000 which seems too much.

My final assessment: Klub Kokos is really pretty good, but lacks something special that many cheaper hotels in Bali have in abundance. The rooms are getting a bit tired and could do with a general spruce up. They have not made full use of their location: the hotel is perched on a magnificent ridge and views from anywhere nearby will blow you away, but not here. I suspect the owners chose the best location for their own residence. At the end of the day, your kids probably won’t care about those things and if you can get out and around beautiful Ubud during your stay, this place is a good option.

We stayed at KK because it was reccommended as a family friendly hotel. Our group consisted of 3 families in 3 rooms for six nights. No doubt about it KK certainly is family friendly and the kids loved the pool equipment and toy room/library. There are, however, some shortcomings, the shower in one room did not work at all and the other 2 rooms had problems with the water suddenly becoming scalding hot - dangerous for young children !!! There was also bug problems and used tissues in the 'jungle shower'. The brekky was ok but the restaurant food was average at best and horribly overpriced. At check out time we discovered we had been charged $5 USD per night per room above the quoted price we obtained on an email from the owner Cathy. We questioned this and Cathy eventually made an appearance ( for the first time in our six day stay ), She apologised and said the quoted price was 'a mistake' but the higher price must be paid. She refused to budge from this position despite the fact that we could produce a copy of the email quote on i-phone.The result - $90USD in Cathy's pocket - not professional - not good business !! To summarise, ok but not great value for themoney. Could easily be so much better if the owner took an active interest in the day to day running of the hotel.

We stayed here for 2 nights at the beginning of our 11 days in Bali and didnt want to leave!

I saw a few bad reviews here and was dubious after booking, but I think some people expect WAY too much for what they know they are getting in the first place. The linen may be ready to be replaced in some cases, and there were a few ants here and there but this was a comfortable and picturesque stay with 2 kids who actually never wanted to leave the hotel. There was everything they needed. Pool, play room, table tennis, library and LOADS of board games, then a sweet little restaurant with the friendliest and kindest staff ever.

It is certainly a different world in Ubud, compared to Kuta and Nusa Dua and I love the contrast. The 30 or so minute walk in to Ubud was absolutely stunning and worth the blister I got from a bad choice of shoes! The kids really enjoyed it too.

My husband had an in house massage too and loved it! I don't remember the price, but it was cheaper than in Kuta.

I recommend this hotel whole heartedly if you are a fun easygoing family who is not going to flip out at seeing an ant or spider. Its Bali after all, and Klub Kokos might just be the heart of this island. I will be back !

This hotel looks nice from the outside, but is worn down on the inside. We arrived in this hotel and when the door of the room was opened I was not happy. Bed covers with holes and dirty dark brown stains. Ants crawling in the shower. A refrigerator with a lot of water. Non working shower. Stained towels and covered with ants. Than the worst thing is that during breakfast the next morning they served tea with 100 ants. We packed our bags and left. This is the worst place ever. Nevertheless the manager never showed up to ask us what's wrong. We went to another evenly priced hotel and this was great. The bungalows have a lot of stairs and so little children unfriendly. Also the available toys are old and sticky. The other people from the staff are very friendly.

Ubud is a must do in Bali. Kokos is the must do in Ubud. Not luxurious but just perfect.Jenny make syour stay special and helps organise day trips etc. Big rooms, fantastic location, nice pool. Only downside is that there is not a good onsite restaurant if you want to eat in at night, upside is that its 20 minutes walk or a short taxi ride to the town where there are tons of good restaurants. While here we went hiking, mountain biking, elephant riding, motorscootering around the local country side and saw fire dance, buddist celebrations and many temples and monuments. Diverse, friendly and beautiful!

We stayed here with our family with 2 kids aged 4 and 5.
Klub Kokos is located 2 km from Ubud. It is a beautiful walk, however probably a bit difficult if you have really small children.

We rented a freestanding bungalow 1 with 2 bedrooms for USD 85 (including taxes, high season surcharge). It has only 7 bungalows so it was nice and quiet. Mind you it is rather family orientated, so if you are not looking for this - stay at another hotel.

We liked the play room and the library, the pool was perfectly adequate, and the service good.

What we did not like, was the high transport fee to Ubud centre (Rp 50000,- an amount for which we travelled from Sanur to Kuta) and the not very cheap restaurant servicing okay-food. It seemed to me they were trying to benefit from the rather isolated location.
As for the accomodation, this was okay to good, the outdoor terrace was nice, however the outdoor shower was a disaster. I noted in the guestbook many guests complaining about it - so I am wondering why they don't do anything about it.

All in all, beautiful location but a little overpriced.

  • Liked — outdoor terrace, beautiful location
  • Disliked — shower, overcharged prices for transport/restaurant
